At least in modern times; the post-Colonial period was pretty nasty, too.

But really, how many of you go out and hug your garbagemen? I already know the answer: zero. Not one of you. 99% of you don't know their names or even notice if it's the same guys from week to week, if you ever see them at all.

Are You Kidding Me? Romney’s Garbage Man Blasts Him In New Political Ad | Mediaite

A new anti-Mitt Romney ad from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees features Richard Hayes, the garbageman who deals with the Romneys’ trash at their oceanfront mansion in La Jolla, California. Dubbed by AFSCME as one of the “people who make America happen,” Hayes talks about his laborious job, and criticizes the GOP nominee for not caring about the government-dependent “47 percent” of voters who the candidate believes won’t vote for him anyway:

“My name is Richard Hayes, and I pick up Mitt Romney’s trash. We’re kind of like the invisible people. He doesn’t realize that the service we provide — if it wasn’t for us, it would be a big health issue, us not picking up trash.

“Residents do come out and shake our hands. Sometimes they give us hugs and thank us for the job we’re doing, hand us water and Gatorades. Tell us we’re doing a good job and keep up the good work. Picking up 15, 16 tons by hand, that takes a toll on your body. When I’m 55, 60 years old, I know my body’s gonna be break down [sic]. Mitt Romney doesn’t care about that.”

This video is reportedly the first in a series of interviews with real workers, meant to be “part campaign attack, part online testimonial, part survey tool and part recruiting tool.”
So… seriously? This is how you’re going to “attack” Romney now?

i live in a flat...we have common garbage containers outside the flat where everybody goes and dumps the trash.

I don't even know when the garbageman comes to pick up the trash. Daily. Weekly. I have no bloody clue. I notice from time to time that the garbage is empty and I say to myself: "huh, the garbageman came". But just as soon as I say that, I instantly forget the whole thing and carry on thinking about something else. I'm pretty sure the garbageman shouldn't criticize me for not giving him a hug. For one reason, I pay his salary. Every month, everybody in the flat and myself pay the salubrization company our duely fees for picking up our garbage.

That's kind of funny. It does mean something though, that guy is part of the 47%, the lowly working poor that Romney despises.

I have the same guy week to week; do not know his name; and know he works his butt off because the city doesn't miss an opportunity to eliminate municipal jobs and force fewer people to do more but if he is still around at Christmas time I will tape a card with some cash in it (which is probably illegal) for him if he is still around then.

I've definitely never hugged a garbageman. Now that I live in NYC, I see them fairly often, but they are always far too busy to stop and talk, and so am I, and you don't just talk to people you don't know in NYC anyway. But growing up in the suburbs, it was fairly common for people to give the garbagemen small gifts during the holidays, and I wouldn't be surprised if people offered him water or gatorade either.

That's hilarious. I wonder if they bothered to check La Jolla's service website, which is managed by the city of San Diego.

If they had, they would find that Mitt Romney's garbage is picked up on Monday's by a truck, with an automated pick up arm. I'm sure running the joystick on that sure does hurt his back.

Heh. From Romney's book:

During my campaign for governor, I decided to spend a day every few weeks doing the jobs of other people in Massachusetts. Among other jobs, I cooked sausages at Fenway Park, worked on asphalt paving crew, stacked bales of hay on a farm, volunteered in an emergency room, served food at a nursing home, and worked as a child-care assistant. I’m often asked which was the hardest job – it’s child care, by a mile.

One day I gathered trash as a garbage collector. I stood on that little platform at the back of the truck, holding on as the driver navigated his way through the narrow streets of Boston. As we pulled up to traffic lights, I noticed that the shoppers and businesspeople who were standing only a few feet from me didn’t even see me. It was as if I was invisible. Perhaps it was because a lot of us don’t think garbage men are worthy of notice; I disagree – anyone who works that hard deserves our respect.

I wasn’t a particularly good garbage collector: at one point, after filling the trough at the back of the truck, I pulled the wrong hydraulic lever. Instead of pushing the load into the truck, I dumped it onto the street. Maybe the suits didn’t notice me, but the guys at the construction site sure did: “Nice job, Mitt,” they called. “Why don’t you find an easier job?” And then they good-naturedly came down and helped me pick up my mess.

Over the years, I've seen a lot of Americans at work. The work on a farm is unrelenting. Work at service jobs in places like restaurants, airports, and retail stores means being on your feet for hours on end, and smiling about it.

I think the real question is does Ann Romney hug the garbage man?

Lawd, what nonsense.

I work for the company that provides people with electricity, (from which innumerable technological blessings flow).

I've dealt with thousands of customers in the field. Do you know how many have had a good word to say to me, or offered me a drink on a hot day? Two.

Anything to keep from addressing the failure of the Obama administration.....Cakes and Circus's....

When are the President's ads going to begin focusing on his record and why he deserves to keep his job?

I want to hear Romney talk about why he should have a shot at the job and why Obama deserves to keep it.

Where the hell does this guy work? Do the sanitation folks even pick up by hand anymore? For decades we've had these trucks that pick up the can (required type and weight). If it's too far away from the curb so the truck arm cannot reach it, they don't pick it up.

I agree, it's a crappy job for most folks. But it's a huge industry with plenty of room for advancement these days and it's not by any standard the only "hidden" service profession. Heck, when was the last time you hugged your elevator repairman?

Oh, so that was you?

I'm not home when our trash is picked up or when our mail is delivered, so I have absolutely no idea who those people are either..but then again, they have no idea who I am, either. I'm just a house number on a route, and the mailman is only privy to my name 'cause it's on the damned envelope.

That said: I have always left a thank you note and small gift in the mailbox for my mail carrier, particularly if they are reliable and considerate (i.e. not leaving a package on my front porch in the pouring rain). I have yet to leave any such notes for my garbage carrier because (1) up until May I lived in a complex, where garbage collection is done by a lift truck and (2) my current garbage men don't have to leave their truck to collect bins, so they'd never collect anything left for them.

That doesn't mean I don't appreciate their service. It doesn't mean I disrespect them. But they're doing a job I'm paying for (my waste collection charges are significantly higher than all other city utilities combined).

Also, I won't hug my boyfriend after a work out until he's de-sweatied. Why would I hug a trash man who's sweaty and covered in garbage funk? Seriously.

Silly? Yes. New Low? Nahh.

I would just about bet money that that particular garbage man is a union employee and nowhere NEAR the '47%'...

I have 5 garbage men

2 on the recycling trucks (Joel and Tim)

3 (in rotation only two at a time) on the garbage truck (Frank, Jared, Shane)

I have spoke to them all and I tip them during christmas and 4th of july.
I have never hugged any of them but I have shook some of their hands.

I learned this custom from my dad, he said its the right thing to do, but I also live in a rural area right outside of the city.

He did it out of respect and to build a relationship with them, which is beneficial both ways.

Lots of garbage men become scavengers, collectors, scrapers and have access to people who can fix things or sell things etc.

its nice to know just about anything I set at the curb will get picked up whether its supposed to or not while other people have thier items left :)

My UPS guy is Tim has been for 20 years

DOnt know the Fed-ex guy/girl it has been different many times and not so popular

my mail lady is peggy, Ive coached her daughter in softball

all this being said it is simply just what "I" do and know and thats that nothing else.

if you are a person who doesnt tip them or doesnt know them, I dont think that means anything at all

but one should also not be disrespectful to any of them or treat them lesser.

I never figured garbage collecters could be such thin-skinned whiners. Perhaps they breed men that way in California, but certainly not where I'm from.

I wave to my garbageman every once in a while.

Id wager that union employee makes more money than you. He has health care through AFSCME (He IS union...I checked but feel free-AFSCME.org). He has a retirement plan. He doesnt 'lift' 15 tons a day. He drives around in his air conditioned truck and I'm sure he does his job well. The union is doing what unions do...lying and shilling and tugging on those heart strings for the democrats.

Dood probably wears skinny girl jeans.

The libbos go from Romney killing a guy's wife who never even worked for him to not caring about his garbage man. If it wasn't so incredibly stupid it could even be funny.

Here's an idea Barry, try running on your record. Now that's funny! :lamo
