Military ballot requests down in key battleground states | Fox News

Requests from military voters for absentee ballots have dropped significantly since 2008, according to newly released statistics, prompting claims that the Department of Defense is dragging its feet in enacting a law meant to boost military voting.
The drop in the battleground states of Virginia and Ohio is among the most pronounced. According to statistics released Monday by The Military Voter Protection Project, the number of absentee ballot requests by both military members and other overseas voters in the two states has dropped 70 percent since 2008.
Virginia had nearly 42,000 total requests in 2008, compared with a little more than 12,000 this year, according to the MVP Project. Ohio had more than 32,000 in 2008, compared with 9,700 this year. The number of military voters specifically -- as opposed to military and overseas voters -- was not broken down in the latest set of statistics, but military-only numbers released by the MVP Project in August documented a similar drop-off in applications.
At the time, military ballot requests in Virginia were down 92 percent. Several other states showed a precipitous drop since 2008, including Alabama, North Carolina and Florida.

Mitchell acknowledged another recent report from the Department of Defense inspector general's office that found the voter assistance offices were not all established "as intended." The report cited a lack of funds, and also suggested that voter assistance information could more effectively be targeted through social media and advertising.
What an amazing coincidence. Who thinks this won't raise any red flags?

I suspect it has more to do with a crappy candidate than it has to do with conspiracy theories....just sayin.

Are there any Virginia-based carriers currently deployed or is it the west coast's turn? That could be part of it.

I'm not a conspiracy guy but 70% seems a bit unusual. This is the first election that the new voting assistance program has been implemented.

I got mine, but they sent me the wrong county. I sent it back, and hopefully it will be good but  we'll see.

The two also had big surges in Democratic voters in 2008, so it may be a sign that democrats are pulling back from Obama instead of the GOP pulling back from Romney. VA doesn't have party affiliation registrations so it is hard to know for sure.

What voting assistance program was there before? Has the early voting process changed that much that the people that did it before couldn't repeat?

Its called FVAP. Its supposed to be a one stop shop for getting people their ballots. It was glitchy when I tried so I went straight to my elections supervisor and requested by ballot directly from them.

I think the NC and PA Guard were also training to deploy with the 2009 surge in 2008. I am not sure how many VA Guardsmen may have been caught up in that.

And don't we have fewer people overseas now?

Shouldn't really have that much of an impact on the numbers. Most military members maintain a residency either of their home state or state they were stationed in that has the most beneficial income tax scheme. FL, TX, AK are all popular ones. I haven't lived in FL for nearly 6 years but its where I vote so I vote by absentee for every election.

It was a drop in requests. Is there some barrier to making a request that someone thinks has been put in place?

edit: And don't we have fewer people overseas now?

Overseas has nothing to do with it, you can be in another state, or even in your home state in another county and use absentee ballots.
