Mitt Romney took in $6 million Saturday night at a Beverly Hills fundraiser, he said, as his backers tried to quell concern about the rocky road the Republican nominee has faced in his presidential bid in recent days.

Something else happened there, besides fundraising, that made me chuckle. It has to do with his reaction to the emergency landing his wife's jet had to make.

“I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Romney said. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she’s safe and sound.”

Yes, nothing like opening a window at 30,000 feet, and then dying from lack of oxygen. Does this observation by Romney make him unfit to govern? Democrats will most likely say yes, and call Romney dumb, but I don't see it that way. I chalk it up to Romney being tired, and then making a comment that made me laugh... Much like Obama's quip about 57 states he made in 2008, which had Republicans making the same kind of statements.....ie, Gee, that Obama guy is dumb. LOL.

The way people are getting so serious about this election, there is nothing like a little humor that shows us that big shots, whether Democratic or Republican, are, after all, human beings, with the propensity to screw up in hilarious ways. LOL.

Awesome!

The more money to take down Comrade Obozo the better IMO

6 mill in Commi-fornia hmmm

IDK, its a non-issue for me. I'm glad that his wife and everyone else on the plane is ok though.

Im glad you can laugh, about a guy who was worried about his wife, and others on planes in general having fires on board not having access to oxygen, and trying to find a way to solve that problem...

Clearly, he didn't mean, all the windows should be able to pop up and down like its a school bus... but they should be able to have some ventilation for the airline to be able to pick up after dropping from 30,000 feet to below 10,000 feet...

I know you think its unheard of... by the old prop planes in WWI and WWII were open to the atmosphere... and they got up to about 10,000 feet...

I just think people are looking way too hard to find stuff on this guy, because he's squeaky in comparison with the overwhelming majority of politicians... so now we put him under a magnifying glass and overanalyze every word he says...

In the meantime, there's a sitting president, who is getting let off for absolutely every poor decision he makes... and judged by the metric of whether he is more tolerable than GWB...

Dood...seriously...laugh for a second. It was a stupid thing to say. Everyone occasionally says stupid things. That was his point.

Agreed, running for President is a grueling task.

I thought it was funny too. That's why I posted the link over in the "Lighter Side" forum.

Romney cracks me up sometimes. Albeit, unintentional.

And who's fault is it that the Republicans have to pretend they came into existence in 2010?

Tide comes in, tide goes out, you can't explain that.

I laugh quite often at all candidates/elections/etc. I love that SNL (although it's AWFUL now) turned sarcasm about news and politics from print media to popular television in a comedic venue... and eventhough Jon Stewart has gone far left and abandoned us in the center... I still find his show to be funny and worth watching...

However, what I was suggesting is that this quote isn't what he made it out to be...

I think what he was saying is there's a problem with airplane safety in regards to onboard fires...

It doesn't equate to the 57 states type of mental mistake... That's not to say Romney doesn't make them. I just don't see that as the case here...

Obama should tell us more about the "Polish death camps." Where were those located at exactly?

And non-pressurized aircraft in WW went well over 10,000 feet. All jetliners have oxygen for all passengers along the lines of WWII aircraft.

I...I give up.

No, that's not what I was saying at all, but I do thank you for your attempt to mischaracterize what I posted.

Let me say it again. Romney said they should have been able to open a window. Jets typically fly at 30,000-35,000 feet. And, again, I don't chalk it up to Romney being dumb. I chalk it up to him being a little tired from all the campaigning. When Obama made his famous 57 state statement, that was also because he was tired. Candidates say the damndest things when they are tired, and I enjoy the crap out of it. LOL.

They were located in Poland, actually.

All jetliners have oxygen for all passengers along the lines of WWII aircraft.

There are two types of emergency passenger oxygen systems on commercial flights: the mask goes to a limited central supply, or the mask goes to a small oxygen generator above the overhead. An oxygen generator only lasts around 15 minutes per passenger. The central source type lasts as long as... well, until you run out, depending on how many passengers are sucking the oxygen. After that... you're on your own.

If the masks ever drop: 1) put the mask on quickly and 2) tighten your seat belt because you're gonna be taking a steep dive to 10,000 feet very, very soon! :)

And non-pressurized aircraft in WW went well over 10,000 feet. All jetliners have oxygen for all passengers along the lines of WWII aircraft.

They could reach altitudes up to 40,000 feet... however they weren't doing so with the windows open... and there had to be protective breathing mechanisms... many people passed out and crashed just from flying in the upper altitudes...

They could comfortable cruise at 10,000 feet even with the windows open... So to suggest that an commercial airliner couldn't have an adaptation for this specific problem where a ventalation compartment could be installed for a plane that drops to 10,000 isn't possible is ridiculous...

It wouldn't be wise to do in the situation of an onboard fire, because the rate of air passing through it could just speed up the spread of flames to potentially engulf the plane in flames, or to the point where it damages the plane to the point where it prevents safe landing.

Yes, all planes have enough oxygen on board for each passenger... if they can get to the respirators... if the fire is in or near a seating area, they're not going to be able to... It's not a long term supply of it either, it's for the short duration of the emergency landing... Also, the oxygen itself, has a high flamability and explosion hazard to it...

So this is a potential problem worth looking more into.

Show me a direct quote where Romney said commercial airliners should allow passengers to be able to open up their windows at 30,000 feet...

I'm not mischaracterising your post... your post mischaracterised what Romney said...

Again... commercial jet airlines cruise at about 30,000 feet, but only when conditions allow for it... they often range in their altitude... smaller craft and shorter flights tend to travel well below 30,000 feet because of the extra work to get up into the higher altitudes...

However, at anytime if there's a change in the pressure in the cabin or for some other reason, they can drop altitude... So if there was some jeopardized the integrity of the air in the cabin... they could drop below 10,000 and allow some form of ventilation... not quite open the windows, but something...

I never said you called Romney dumb... I said you were equating it to a mental mistake from fatique... and that's a mischaracterization... This isn't fatigue, it was Romney identifying a problem and attempting to solve a problem from the early point of generation of the idea, without fully looking into it...

From my link, the direct quote from Romney..........

"When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open"

Reading is fundamental, guy. LOL.

Instead of attempting to spin what Romney said, why don't you just laugh along with the rest of us? Romney is a human being. LOL.

You can really tell the Republicans are nervous when they feel they have to defend a truly ignorant statement from a man with multiple degrees. My understanding is that aside from the air pressure/ lack of actual oxygen at high altitudes there is also the problem that the air up there is really cold. If you look at the old WW II films, those guys in the open air B-17s wore very heavy clothing to combat the extreme temps. Literally any flesh that touched bare metal would freeze to it instantly. Anyway, nice to see that this is what rich people do with those continued "temporary" tax breaks that are so vital to the economy. Wonder how many jobs they created with that 6 million?
