I doubt that is what he intended to say. I'll explain why at the end of this post.

We accept that 47% of the population does not pay income tax but many of them work for low wages and have many deductions. We also know that quite a few of those 47% are Republicans for reasons other than taxes. Guns. Abortion. Stuff like that.

So what he's saying to these millionaires is true. At least 47% of the population could care less about income taxes. Unfortunately, Romney's crown jewel is tax cuts that naturally benefit people who pay the maximum rate. Unfortunately, this (I think) was a mistake. Only the mostr selfish of the really high earners care that much about taxes either. If you make just a million a year, even at the Clinton rates, your difference is just $26K. Hardly worrisome. And if you make $10 million a year it's just $600K. How upset can you be to have over $6 million left after that tax. Nobody loves to pay taxes but they aren't the problem.

If I were Romney's adviser I would have told him to say that taxes were just fine as they are and go on to have some sort of useful plan about, well, anything that matters. Even if the rates revert back to Clinton era rates, the world won't end. Taxes used to be much, much higher. Instead, he's picked a very gnarly crown jewel. Will that cost him the election? I don't know but he sure didn't do himself a favor.

So, based on my infinite wisdom here I'm surmising he didn't mean to say 47% of the people were leeches. He was just appealing to the limited number of super-rich that think they need to pay less tax because they can't be happy knowing that getting richer will take a little longer.

If you watch the video again (the one at the party). The tone of the speech shows arrogance and ignorance, which could be problematic for a president.

He didn't mean to say, but he does think 47% of Americans take more than they give and are "leeches". Even if you don't play taxes, it doesn't mean your not productive.

Did he also mean 47% of Americans don't care much about tax cuts, most certainly true of course he believes that. Hell, I even believe over 50% of Americans wouldn't say taxes is the number one issue. However believing that doesn't mean he doesn't have a very "high opinion" of 47% of Americans.

A good businessman, at least in the U.S., is fundamentally suppose to be optimistic and believe most people are altruistic. Decisions are made based on logic, but the the overall outlook is suppose to be positive. Yet the tone is very negative, and Romney's suppose to be running as a great businessman. Kinda raises some eyebrows.

Problem is it is not true. Half of the 47% DO PAY income taxes.. its called payroll tax. Like it or not payroll tax is a federal income tax. Half of what is left are senior citizens and then we come to the "too poor to pay" people.. and of course the quite few mega rich who also dont pay a dime in federal income tax.

This has got to be the saddest effort to smile. I'm not sure why anyone would want to run a country of 47% degenerates and leeches either.

I'm not sure but do you guys see a "Commander In Chief" here? All I see is anger, fear, and frustration.

Note he dodged a lot of questions.

I don't know, shiang...I didn't really see any anger, fear or frustration in that video. Could you supply me with time marks for when you saw this stuff? It'll go a long way toward me understanding how you perceive things.

Thanks.

He's just making **** up.

Pete, Please re-read my post and you'll discover I said the same thing. I said that many of the "47%" end up not paying payroll tax even though they work, they get refunded by deductions. They just are so poorly paid that they fall below the taxable minimum. My point was these are decent, hard working people and only a minority of them live on the dole.

There are some mega-rich that pay very little and Corporations that pay none. That's a separate issue.

He looks more natural on the rare occasion when he's telling the truth.
