Three in four Americans feel they have little or nothing in common with Mitt Romney, while nearly 60 percent feel the same way aboutPresident Barack Obama, according to an Esquire/Yahoo! News poll.
In the wake of Romney's remarks dismissing nearly half of Americans as self-identified victims who are dependent on government—videotaped at a donor event earlier this year andposted online this week by Mother Jones magazine—these new numbers are more bad news for a candidate struggling to connect with ordinary Americans. The margin of error for the survey, conducted shortly after the two national political conventions, is plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Further complicating the Republican ticket's image problem is that a Romney presidency is viewed as significantly more beneficial towealthy Americans than a second Obama term would be. Sixty-two percent of those surveyed said the wealthy would be better off under Romney than Obama. That split reverses when Americans were asked who would benefit the poor: 57 percent say Obama, 30 say Romney.

I think that is true, but I don't think that's Mitt's biggest problem..

I see no evidence that Mitt ever thinks.

I like the circles from below. the guys neither and both equally are my kind of people. 5-6% are on the right track.

EDIT1: On the other hand... Obama has turned from the anti-war candidate into the pro-war candidate in the eyes of the population. on the question from near the end of the article.

Both Obama and Romney would be considered wealthy in comparison to most Americans. Mitt is the poster boy for the silver spoon set but the Obamas made more than 18M over a ten year period. I think the biggest distinction is that Romney's success seems to have been very dependent on his father's political accomplishments and wealth. Probably too many memories of the last time the son of a rich politician was elected for that to elicit much empathy.

This is a survey of 1,000 "adults". For political purposes it is useless. "Likely voters" is the only category that gives an accurate picture.

I keep wanting to give the guy my vote and he keeps giving me reasons to hold on to it. I do identify with his type, When I first started on Wall Street I used to buy my suits for $50 at a place in the "Garment District" called Moe Ginsberg. The suits were not Saville Row by any means, but, I did the best I could. He reminds of my co-workers who used to poke fun at my clothes. I left the job got my advanced degrees and did just fine. Unfortunately, that is the kind of guy he reminds me of.....a real prick....

Great at business, ZERO people sense....

I thought the Obama's net worth was in the range of 5 million.

I was basing that on a list of their 2000-2010 tax returns(which, of course, I cannot relocate). His income has gone up considerably the last few years due to book revenues.

Don't bother looking for it.. I'll take your word for it.

I'd say 100% are lying. Unless you know one of them personally, how the hell do you have a "personal connection?" This might be one of the dumbest poll questions ever.

Re: Three in four Americans feel little or no personal connection to Romney, Esquire/

Republican convention was a failure then.

What the hell are you talking about? Here I thought I was the only one who once lived in a third world country, grew up in Hawaii, went to a posh Ivy League school, then spent time as a community organizer, preaching how to redistribute wealth via Cloward-Piven thug-like tactics!!!

Re: Three in four Americans feel little or no personal connection to Romney, Esquire/

Every generation of my family has served in the military defending this country since the Civil War. Members have been killed and inujured.

I don't expect everyone to serve but you would think that some generation would have stepped up to wear the stripes.

As I have said before even the British Royals even serve in their nation's military. The pampered Romneys are too good to wear the stripes.

Well unless you were born a Mormon to a wealthy family where your father happened to be an ex governor, went to an exclusive prep school, ventured into the wilds of France on a "mission", then attended an Ivy League for post graduate work, you don't have much in common with Romney either.

Re: Three in four Americans feel little or no personal connection to Romney, Esquire/

Republican primaries were a failure.
to be honest, this whole election has been a total failure. can we not churn out two candidates that actually might help the country?

Re: Three in four Americans feel little or no personal connection to Romney, Esquire/

*sigh* I feel 0 connection with either one . . . making it a purely robotic function; candidacies and politicking and ****.

Where's the therapy group for not like either one at all?

Re: Three in four Americans feel little or no personal connection to Romney, Esquire/

I wish people would vote based on platforms rather than which candidate they would like most to hang out with. This isn't a competition for a new friend, it's a job interview for a person with a specific agenda.

Re: Three in four Americans feel little or no personal connection to Romney, Esquire/

I dont think romney is a bad guy...actually I think hes a really decent guy...Its the far right that has destroyed his candidacy...I know I know all the conservatives on here are going to say its HIM not being conservative enough but know what...THATS TRIPE....he would tore obama a new one without the far right pushing their agenda in the house and Koch brothers forcing Paul Ryan on him to assure they got a huge tax cut to get all thier campaign pac spending back plus
