BuzzFeed finds an amazing 1962 video in which Lenore Romney talks about why her husband George would be a good governor of Michigan in part because he was once "on relief -- welfare relief -- for the first years of his life."

Is there a point to this? What I mean is what difference does it make if he was or wasn`t on welfare?

as was pointed out on the daily show last nite, it means that mitt's father would not have voted for mitt. because mitt has insisted those who were on the dole would not cast a ballot for him ...

of course george romney was the politician who released many years of tax returns saying
... what mattered in personal finance was how a man conducted himself over the long haul

too bad mitt is not a chip off the old block

Means that Romney SR would have voted for Obama no matter what..... according to Romney Jr.

OK, I see what you're saying. Tongue in cheek, right?

Frankly, that Romney's parents were on relief doesn't change my opinion of Romney JR at all. I still won't vote for him.

Given that George Romney was about 2 years old at the time, I doubt he would have voted at all.

Ahh so political hackery, seriously looking for a gotcha moment, like Obama saying you didn`t build that.
I meant what difference does it make, not what difference can people spin this into to pretending it`s important.

Not true, Mitt Romney opposes election fraud.

Just how many idiots are "working the internet: digging up crap? I sure hope the guy who found that didn't make a nickel. What an idiot. Is this what politics has come to? Is this the "gift" that is the internet??

Not tongue in cheek. Romney said that the 47% who are dependent on government handouts would not vote for him no matter what.. and since Romney's father was dependent on government handouts then he would not vote for Romney either.

Sounds like someone is upset a Republican got caught in another example of hypocrisy. Do you think Mitt was unaware that his father ever received welfare or is this another example of the double standard where it was justified in this one case and never any other?

Not at all. He's an idiot. When will politicians learn that "the mike is always live"? I just think it's immaterial. So his dad was on welfare when he was a child. This somehow makes Romney less than he is? I'm just sick of the "gotcha games." I mean, is this what someone will base their vote on? Really?

It shows that Romney's father knew when he needed help from the government and was not afraid to take the help and didn't look down on it. Its a shame being from such nice parents that Romney turned out to be such a snob! His mother and father were real Republicans - Romney is some kind of warped version of a Republican.

Again What difference does it make? Why do people always like to say AHA you said this but your father/mother/brother/2nd cousin 2X removed did/said/obtained/gave that. Is Aunt Zetuni being in the USA illegally Obama`s fault? I seriously doubt this will affect anyones vote and if it does they are not looking at the issues in any way shpe or form with a critical eye.

Before anyone goes all nuts claiming I am being partisan, I am not I want to know why you think person A is responisble for person B's actions?

The point is not that his father needed welfare for a little bit - it was the fact that he was not against it helping people - but the way Romney looks down on them and says they act like victims. He should be more empathetic not stick his nose up at them.

Again what Romney's parents did has squat to do with Romney on this issue. If you don`t like what Romney says/represents then fine but what has that got to do with his father. I am seeing some kind of attempt at guilt by association here. Romney is 2X as guilty for his remarks because his father was on welfare!! Oh my god horror of horror! Would you have approuved of what Romney said if his father was never on welfare? I doubt it so why does it make any difference if he was?

mitt's 47% speech spoke about those who are on the dole with disdain; that they were irresponsible
as it turns out, there was a time when mitt's dad was assisted with welfare
mostly, this shows how out of touch mitt is. and that videotape of his mom mentioning his dad's receiving welfare does not make that case ... it just makes that case even stronger

Not true, Mitt Romney opposes election fraud.

Actually... he is for it when it comes to himself, but against it when it comes to others... but that could change depending on who we are talking about.

Romney was accused and "acquitted" of voter fraud once..Now that acquittal was based on the fact that he claimed he was working for Bain despite not being in state due to the Olympics... which we now know is not what he claims now... ahhh the hypocrisy of this man knows no bounds.

I dont think Mitt`s father being on welfare makes it worse except in the eyes of people looking for something, anything to try and make Romney look worse. Again I can`t see how this will change anyones mind about Romney. Romney`s remarks may change their minds but his father being on welfare? I don`t think so.

It has alot to do with Romney's character compared to his father's character- Romney's father released 12 years of taxes because he felt that it showed honesty. Romney is too good to release all his taxes. Romney's father was not against Welfare for people who needed it - Romney calls them people who cry "I'm a poor victim". Maybe if Romney was more like his father he would be higher up in the polls.

Romney is a hypocrite because he was acquitted of voter fraud, but nonetheless is opposed to 2-year olds casting votes. Gotcha.

Aside from the fact that I still believe it makes Mitt look like a hypocrite(admittedly one generation removed), it also is a strong rebuttal to his premise that social welfare programs cause lifelong dependency. Obviously Mitt's father not only didn't become dependent but achieved a notable political career and amassed enough personal wealth to place a silver spoon in his son's mouth. Romney is the one who made it an issue by disparaging those receiving assistance. The Democrats didn't just come out of left field and announce his father received welfare.

And just how many ways does it take to prove Romney made an idiotic statement?

The problem with politics is everything is on tape. But actually this tape makes you wish that Romney's father was running and not Mitt. His mother actually did a great job making the case for him as to why people should vote for him.

His father did run. It didn't go nearly as well for George as it's going for Mitt.
