So now it is out in the open - Mitt Romney has drunk the far right kool aid and has spouted up the nonsense about the 47% that the far right so loves to demonize as the true problem in America. Forget that most of that 47% works hard or has worked hard and is not on welfare or the dole. Because they do not pay the hated progressive federal income tax, they are to be demonized and portrayed as slackers and teat suckers by the millionaire country club set.

Forget that they pay lots of other taxes. Forget that many of them pay a higher percentage of their income in taxation than many millionaires like Romney do. In the opinion of Romney and his country club set, they are worthless slackers who will not take responsibility for their lives and are to be written off.

Those of you here for the last few years are no strangers to the demonized 47%. The right wing think tanks have done a very good job at getting their sycophants and toadies to go on and on and on about them and now its a right wing cause celebre embraced by the GOP Presidential nominee.

Moderate Mitt Romney is dead and Extremist Mitt is now out of the closet for all to see in the full light of day.

So here is my question: how long will it take for Mittens to go full bore radical extremist and start floating the ideas seen my some here over the past few years of connecting voting rights with tax payments? Will Mittens go all the way and endorsee the ultimate voting suppression measures or will he wait until he gets into office with GOP in charge of the House and Senate?

Even though this concept is high on the dream list of many Republicans in Libertarian clothing and Tea Party members, I just don't see that it will ever fly and therefore they won't even acknowledge that it represents their ideal. You would need a SCOTUS packed full of neo aristocrats for it to stand the inevitable sea of challenges. What is really amusing is how much of the affluent elitist dogma is based in the assumption they represent the portion of the population with the highest intelligence hence their success. How smart is it to alienate 47% of the population unless you are certain that it will assure at least 48% of the remainder will become your devotees because of the statement?

Romney would seek to decrease the capital gains tax rate, which would be a good thing.

Hopefully he would take Ryan's advice and cut entitlement programs like welfare and medicare.

You mean the capital gains tax that is already at a record low? I can see why because rich people who sit on their butts and sell stock need all the further help they can get.

You might as well start a thread discussing Tebow leading the Jets to a Super Bowl victory or where you like to be beamed to in Disney's new transporter as each of those items is far more likely than a Romney presidency. This party is over folks!

when will Romney go elitist? don't know, but Obama is already there---hobnobbing with beyonce and letterman while the mid east burns and Netanyahu gets snubbed.

A second obama term with get you libs what you want. a socialist dictator---a country run by a tiny group of super elites and all the rest of us equally miserable serfs. you guys have no idea what you are asking for when you continue to support obama.

hmm.. liberal talking point one day is " rich people need to be patriotic and pay more income tax.

talking point next day " it's elitist to say people should pay income tax.. income tax doesn't count if you pay other taxes"

for what it's worth, I think Mitt will do just about the same thing Obama does ... increase the power of the executive, bypass the legislature to put his agenda into play, keep secrets, and generally piss off half the nation with idiot partisan shenanigans.

If Obama wins this year, we'll have to wait until 2016 when Jeb Bush wins to see massive bombing of Iran.

No... I would rather have the regressives think they have a shot and waste hundreds of millions on a lost cause rather than re-direct that money on congressional races where it might do damage.

...another Con with a con; trying to tell us balancing the budget and lowering the debt are paramount issues, yet more than willing to throw $1-3T down another rat hole, kill lots of American and innocent civilians and generally take 5 steps back on world peace and US security.

Sorry, the Bush doctrine is old inventory rotting on the back shelf. The product never worked and now you can't even give it away.

C'mon, his wife only owns "a couple of cadillacs." Where do you come up with this elitist nonsense?

The Capital Gains tax is the ultimate example of how the tax code benefits the richest and screws the working class.

Most capital gains are a way of declaring that people who work should pay more than people who contribute nothing to get a profit. As it is, the capital gains rate is ridiculously low. That issue is probably the single biggest reason I won't vote for Romney. Here is a guy with hundreds of millions of dollars whose primary goal is to pay less taxes on his own primary source of income. Some patriot he turns out to be. Shameless.

If he hadn't turned out to be such a self-serving prick, we wouldn't have to suffer 4 more years of Obusha.

I always find thinking like this very interesting.

The taxes that the "poor" pay are things like sales taxes... which are passed directly onto the consumer. They don't even appear in the price of a good bought in a store. Should we repeal these kinds of taxes completely, because they are technically regressive and take a higher percentage of lower-income earners' income?

What about things like taxes on things we want people to use less of... like cigarettes... and gasoline... and tanning beds? Do you find these taxes to be completely unnecessary? I mean, doesn't it mean that only the rich should be able to smoke, or get some color on their skin in the winter months? And don't the excise taxes on gasoline directly target the poor more than the rich? The average consumer's fuel bill in a year is something liek $2,800... and more than half of that is taxes! And what about the cost of that tax being passed onto every single consumer in the country by way of added cost to shipping, food, etc?

Let's talk about the payroll tax. Another completely separate tax is levied against an employee's earnings that they have no way to recoup by way of refund or rebate. If we count this in with their tax burden, we're looking at something like a nominal rate of 60% tax burden on regular income.... not the 28% purported as the average tax rate for low-to-middle income earners. But that's not the case, now is it? This tax burden is actually on the employers, not the employees. But it doesn't get calculated in with statistics that try to make it look like "large corporations" and "rich people" don't pay a high tax rate.

We are all already taxed to kingdom-come, poor and rich alike. What the hell is the government doing with all that money? At what point do we as a NATION tell them that they have enough money, and that they should figure out how to spend it more wisely?

I spit on your loaded question. :x

So Romney is finished? Yet again?

If I had I dime for every time some pinhead proclaimed that Romney is finished...

Anyway, if you believe the mainstream media, Romney has lost the election again. That's the third time in as many weeks, notwithstanding that the election won't actually happen until 47 days after the day after tomorrow. Last week it was his statement criticizing the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, and we forget what it was the week before. This week's fatal kerfuffle is all about--you guessed it--the number 47.

Time will tell.... and not much time at at that.

Do you think Romney has helped himself with these comments?

Should he double down and take the position that some extremists on this very board have taken and advocate taking away voting rights from those who do not pay the federal income tax even though they supported politicians who voted for that legislation which allows it?

Too bad for Mitt that his Tea Party albatrosses have already made that decision for him. I had a TP link pop up on my FB page this morning courtesy of a wannabe redneck I used to know. It proclaims quite boldly that 47% of the population truly are "moochers" and deserving of all the disdain that can be heaped upon them. I guess in TP Fantasyland they believe they make up the other 53%.
