Texas engages in Massive, inaccurate voter roll purge

So, what do you suggest as a better course to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the voter rolls?

Actually, first things first -- do you object to any attempt to do so at all? If not, then the above question applies.

Literally the second sentence of my post answers that question.

OK, then how about this?

What is your argument, that a better course of action action isn't possible? That if you think they need to do a better job why don't you do it yourself? I pretty sure that if I was a citizen of Texas, that I'd be well within my right to demand a better system, even if I didn't know exactly how it would work. Hell that's why we elect people to office in the first place, to manage the government of the state because the people don't have the time or energy to become knowledgeable enough on every detail to do it themselves, so we elect individuals who can do it for a full time job.

I don't need to remind you that this voter purge is 21% inaccurate? That is negligent to one's duties as an elected official to an extreme. Off the top of my head I'd say don't use a list from social security for this purpose that they themselves say shouldn't be relied on. But if you're asking for a detailed run down of a plan for Texas to better purge it's voter rolls then I cannot provide it.

Why in the world would you think this is a good idea? If you have a government record that says John Q, Jones has died, why would you not send the letter to only the John Q Jones' to see if any of them are the one cited?

Problem is that your systems are not that good. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. As long as you dont have a national ID system that follows you from birth till the grave then this problem will keep come up and both sides will try to exploit it. Now one way to live under the current system and still keep the limited integrity there is, is to require everyone to re-register every 4 years. That way you get a purge every 4 years that is uniform and does not target specific groups for political gain. Granted it would most likely drive your turn-outs down big time, but hey the price for not wanting a uniform national ID program and election system.

Seems pretty straight forward to me. - but I am a rational person - that is why I am a conservative.

Most conservatives are not rational :) History proves that.

I'm making no arguments. I'm asking you what you think would work better.

Texas is GOP Central. This effort is simply one plank in the larger national effort to do two things
1- keep the Republican Party as a viable political party poised to win elections
2- prevent the Republican party from having to bow to demographic realities and depart from being the white peoples party as 2050 fast approaches and white people become this nations minority.

if each and every voter that was "suspect" was given a reasonable opportunity to clear their name on the voters rolls... then I am satisfied.

I was purged once in Nevada... it was just a matter of a typo in my address.
they sent a letter to the address ( which didn't actually exist) and when they didn't get a reply, I was purged.... I found out about it when I went in for early voting, and rectified the problem... it was inconvenient, but I wasn't mad or anything... **** happens and the state has a duty and responsibility to provide for clean elections.

you been sitting in on secret GOP conspiracy meetings?

Can people re-register once purged?

Ok, then not a huge deal they might miss at most one election and not be able to register in time.

Assuming the purges aren't targeted to help one party over another then changing the results is unlikely. Not to mention that the Republican party would die before Texas goes blue =P.

pretty ****ty thing for that nobody State Rep to say... but I'm not sure he should be considered the spokeperson for the entire GOP.

doesn't matter to me much, as far as I'm concerned, both Dems and Reps are despicable stewards of elections.... all we get from them is further entrenchment of themselves.

The "nobody" is the Republican Majority House Leader. He is the big dog that all legislation must go through. he is a big freakin deal in that state. He just told you WHY the republican party did what they did and its for pure political advantage to win elections just like I said it was. ALEC supplies these folks with their marching orders. The similarity in GOP controlled states is staggering. This guy just admitted it publicly.

It is no secret what the strategy is.

his statement can be spun a few different way... yours is but one.

as I said, it doesn't make much difference to me...I'm not going to defend his statement or their "plank" and i'm not going to defend Democrats either.... both major parties are despicable stewards of elections... the both do major disservices to this country

The state, or at least where I live, also sends out cards to registered voters telling them they are still registered and to remind them of the up coming election, poling places and times. This is the info they have so if it is wrong, you have time to go change it. I have already gotten my card for the upcoming election. I have also always been asked for my drivers license whenever I vote to confirm I am me, I still live where they think and therefore am at the correct voting location.

If someone is wondering or doubts if they are still registered, then haul themselves over to the voting registration office and confirm it.

purges aren't that big of a deal to me either... voters are afforded ample opportunity to fix themselves up.

each party , i'm sure, has designs on these purges helping them... but all it takes is responsible voters to completely mitigate any nefarious plans.
of course, each party will sell itself as the guardian of voting rights .. and they will both promise to protect you from the other.
both parties lie like that a lot.

it wasn't that long ago that Texas was a solid blue state... Texas didn't change, the parties did.... and they can, and probably will, change again.

lolz responsible citizens, that does cut down on the percentage =P. Half the population able to vote doesn't on presidential elections over 2/3 on interim elections. Probably only 1% really does any digging and research on the candidates, Volunteers are generally shunned as "too partisan" (I've done it in school once it was pretty fun when our candidate kicked ass with like 80%, but I'm too lazy to do any campaign work). The good thing is the hard left and hard Right are split fairly evenly so the 10% that's capable of making decisions (though usually not accurate or for the right reasons) decide the elections.

yeah.. we do have a sever shortage of responsible voters, to be sure.... i'm unsympathetic to their plight though... it's their own fault they are irresponsible and nothing anyone else can say or do can change their ways.

hmmmm - I misread your original intent - I thought you meant to send letters to every person in the state. If you meant that we should require re-registration every 4 years, then I agree = and have never thought of that idea before. Sounds good to me. :peace

I disagree with your second assertion - most conservatives are VERY rational people. It is probably the most obvious difference between the two parties. DEMs are driven by emotion and GOP is driven by logic. You can see that in how the two parties model their campaigns. DEMs go for the drama and GOP tries to present analysis.

I know, I know - there are counter examples to both. But IN GENERAL, you would be hard pressed to honestly assert that the DEMs operate a more logic based campaign than the GOP.

And the GOP is not the ideal of conservatism - it is merely more conservative than the DEM party. I would LOVE for there to be MORE conservatism in the GOP, but until it happens I will oppose the drama-queens by supporting the side that MOST CLOSELY aligns with my views.

I just gave you my answer.

If you don't know the answer, or even have any ideas, how do you know there's a better way to do it? You can't just assume there is.
