White House clarifies Obama

White House clarifies Obama’s statement that Egypt is not an ‘ally’
Posted By Josh Rogin Thursday, September 13, 2012 - 12:30 PM Share
President Barack Obama didn't intend to signal any change in the U.S.-Egypt relationship last night when he said Egypt is not an "ally," the White House told The Cable today.

In an interview with Telemundo Wednesday night, Obama said that the U.S. relationship with the new Egyptian government was a "work in progress," and emphasized that the United States is counting on the government of Egypt to better protect the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, which was attacked by protesters on Sept. 11.

"I don't think that we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider them an enemy," Obama said. "They're a new government that is trying to find its way. They were democratically elected. I think that we are going to have to see how they respond to this incident..snip

The actual gaffe lies in the correction, as Egypt has been an ally of the United States since the normalization of relations in the 1970s.

So whats the gaffe? That Egypt isn't an ally of the United States? Do you think they are? Should Obama have said they are our best buddy in the world?

wrong.... Nato would say they are not..

the poitn is Obama "shoots first, aims later" like his hero Jeremiah Carter..

Egypt was designated as a Major Non-NATO Ally in 1989 when Congress first passed the law creating that status, which gives them special privileges in cooperating with the United States, especially in the security and technology areanas.

Hmm - slightly off the path, here - but maybe they should readdress how we defined 'countries' in relationship-terms when they change their seat of government via some type of upheaval.

Obama is too stupid to be President...way to quell the situation..

You still haven't actually pointed out the gaffee and said what you think Obama should have said...

You make a topic about a gaffee, I think "What's the gaffee" is a pretty fair question dude.

Let me put it to you this way: they're close enough allies that Bush 43 was comfortable enough to not make Egypt a priority in his Middle Eastern democratization project in exchange for help in dealing with al-Qaeda in Egypt (as well as a large chunk of change in foreign aid).

This isn't a gaffe as much as it is a walk back. I'm sure Obama means that the new Egyptian government isn't an American ally, which is dumb for other reasons (our assistance to the anti-Mubarak protesters, for instance; it's a case of 'you break it, you bought it').

He and his right wing friends are totally desperate at them moment, so they are making up things big time to try to deflect attention away for the failing Romney campaign and his monumental cluster**** of yesterday with his gaffe about what happened in Egypt and Libya.

" hes not sure what Egypt is"...after the the stellar, one day an apology , next day fake outrage at the attack on our embassy, then followed up by 1 minute of talking about it Vegas as he goes into campaign mode.. as we have dead Americans in Libya..Obama harldy looked angry or upset, jsut worried about if he will be relected..

way to go Obama... keep it classy ..

lets not send them the 1.5 BILLION...

There's... absolutely no reason for him to be sure as to the orientation of the new Egyptian government, as it's been established for less than a year and it's still early in its transitional phase. The use of the word 'ally' to describe Mubarak's Egypt would certainly not be incorrect.

Obama is a loser.. nothing to make up..

you have it backwards...

so Obama forced an Ally out of office.. who had been containing Egypt and respecting all peace agreemeents, for a TERRORIST GROUP?

and now he sends terroriists our money?

Mubarak was an 'ally' in the sense that he was useful to us during the later stages of the Cold War, and to... whatever it was, exactly, that Bush thought he was doing in North Africa. But he was quickly becoming a drain on foreign aid, and, as I recall, the Bush II Administration was starting to cool to him by 2008.

so Obama jettisoned him, the largest Arab Country int eh Mideast, for an unknown terororist group?

way to go Obama..

who cares if GWB cooled on Hosni..? whatever that means....so now Egypt is allowing Iranian vessels in the Suez...

Obama... what a ****in idiot..

Obama is sneding them 1.5 billion... still....and is doing militarty drills with them,..

The shameless attempts by the right wing to make hay out of a terrible foreign disaster befalling an honorable American bravely serving his country is disgusting and sickening.

You should care because the odds are, if W. had had a hypothetical third term, he'd have also given support to the anti-Mubarak rebels, and probably even more intense support to the Arab Spring more generally than Obama did/has. Democratization was sort-of his 'thing'.

So Egypt isn't an ally, like he said? Or are terrorists are ally and he was wrong?

What the **** are you trying to say dude, what should have Obama said!! Tell me that.

The problem with you and your ilk is that you attack Obama for everything. It's basically like the boy who cried wolf. So when you do have a legitimate complaint or something to take issue with, your credibility is lessened due to the other nonsense that you expressed outrage over. Yes, it's clear that you don't like Obama. If I wanted a clear and unbiased view of Obama, I certainly wouldn't look to you, nor would I go to someone who drools all over him and praises him for everything. You and your ilk lack credibility. Thankfully, you are in the minority.

There is a perception growing that the Obama administration seems to be falling apart under the pressure of the events going on overseas.

I get the distinct impression that Travis doesn't actually know, or care, about Egypt's diplomatic standing.

You guys fail so hard...
darth-vader-epic-fail.jpg

One minute you criticize Obama for "apologizing" and "Sympathizing", now when Obama is forceful with Egypt's government, you guys criticize him for that. It is Egypt's govt. that is responsible for external security for foreign embassies in their country.

It's called diplomacy... Without actually saying it overtly, that "not our ally, not our enemy" line, gave Egypt notice. "Get your **** in order, or we will do it for you."

There is a perception growing that the Obama administration seems to be falling apart under the pressure of the events going on overseas.

That impression is very, very ill-founded. If there's one area in which the Obama Administration has been successful according to its own standards, it's foreign affairs. It's probably the best-positioned Administration on foreign issues since Bush I. I don't agree with its foreign policy approach whatsoever, but trying to pretend otherwise is ludicrous.

The Republican Nixonians and neo-realists certainly agree, which is why e.g. Foreign Affairs has been so glowing on the Administration's policies.

How so? Killing OBL? Being a submissive dog with many countries (except with England and Israel)? The unrest going on against the United States right now is not because of some Youtube video. It was planned and happened on Sept 11th because of the significance of that date.

Actually, his foreign policy 'successes' (by his own standard) lie in the continuation of the Bush II agenda of Middle Eastern democratization. I am absolutely perplexed by people who supported, say, the War in Iraq, or Bush's intervention in the Trans-Sahara, who get upset over Obama's assistance to the Libyan rebels or his support for the Egyptian Revolution. That was nothing more than a continuation of the neo-con line from the mid-2000s, and it's gone exactly as they wanted so far.

As for the rest ("being a submissive dog"), that's bull**** for the base. We're talking serious foreign policy here, not "how can we get these people riled up by posting a photo of Obama bowing to some principate?".
