Dem. governor takes on Obama - POLITICO.com

West Virginia Democratic Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin isn’t just putting some distance between his campaign and President Obama: He’s gone on the attack.

In his first television ad, a 30-second spot titled “Coal Town,” Tomblin frames his efforts as a fight against the White House.

“Since the day I became governor, I fought the Obama administration’s war on coal,” he says in the 30-second spot. “I took them to court and we won. I won’t let anyone push us around.”

Treasury: U.S. to lose $25 billion on auto bailout | The Detroit News

Dude you've made 4 topics today, 7 yesterday, can you tone it done on the spamming of senseless rants a little?

Guy in coal-heavy district defends coal power.

News at 11.

So how do you two feel about increasing EPA coal regulations and the loss of jobs that will entail?

Dovetailing into that is how do you think such a blunt assessment by the governor in a coal state will affect Obama's chances in that state?

I'll take jobs lost over lives lost. Coal is ancient technology and is harmful to us. It needs to either go away or evolve to the point where it isn't as harmful. Yes, this makes it more expensive. Same way all our efforts to make nuclear power safe made nuclear power more expensive.

There may be some electoral consequences. Ask me how much I care about any particular politician having a job. :D

I sure am glad the Leftist government is hear to protect us from ourselves.

I wonder where they're going to be when their agenda runs the country into the ground and we turn into a 3rd world nation.

Did installing scrubbers in coal power plants, as mandated in the past, increase or decrease jobs?

Exactly what chance did you think Obama had in West Virginia in the first place?

1st point, are you aware of how much pollution from coal fired plants has fallen since 92? Eventually updating multimillion dollar scrubbers catches up with the economic viability of a plant.

Exactly what chance he has is beside the point---enacting regulations that close down plants and jobs without legislation is solely on the President. Just because he doesnt have their political support doesnt mean he should crush them economically.

Not following you here. It was a government regulation and it created jobs.

“It is uncertain how power companies may respond to four key Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, but available information suggests companies may retrofit most coal-fueled generating units with controls to reduce pollution, and that 2 to 12 percent of coal-fueled capacity may be retired,” GAO said.

“Available information suggests these actions would likely increase electricity prices in some regions,” GAO said. “Regarding prices, the studies GAO reviewed estimated that increases could vary across the country, with one study projecting a range of increases from 0.1 percent in the Northwest to an increase of 13.5 percent in parts of the South more dependent on electricity generated from coal.”

Dead customers don't buy much so... not so good for business either.

Thank you for heading all the way to the end of the slippery slope argument. Its a fine line between costs and keeping an energy economically viable and producing energy and making a profit doing so.

Obama was never going to win that state anyway, you should know that

I do not understand why the federal government, the EPA specifically, is blamed for why the coal industry is slowly dying.

Instead, the blame should be placed squarely at the feet of the natural gas industry. Over the past few years fracking has led to a huge expansion in natural gas deposits that are able to be extracted, leading to a boom that caused the price of natural gas to fall dramatically. So now not only is natural gas cleaner than coal, but it is also cheaper.

This is the beauty of capitalism and creative destruction. Maybe instead of West Virginia basing their economy around what is quickly becoming an antiquated source of energy they should be preparing for a world in which coal is no longer dominant and diversify their state's economy. So far, it looks like they are unwilling to make any of the necessary changes.

It is west virginia. have you seen these people in coal mining towns? Seriously, coal is a dirty fuel we no longer need like we used to. Yes, it is better to rid ourselves of such a poor burning pollutant than to keep a few west virginia coal miners working. Sorry, lots of people lose their jobs when technology advances.

Again, WV is a winner take all red state. his chances are slim and none, and some of those hill people probably ate slim. obama wasn't going to win there, so why should he pander to a bunch of white trash? hell, Romney has the state without a fight so i cannot understand why he is even pandering to the fools in that state. But i am sure it is important to local candidates to fight that losing battle.

Treasury: U.S. to lose $25 billion on auto bailout | The Detroit News

Ya you go back in your coal mine and tell the nuclear scientists to "back off my coal!"

It's like the carriage company saying "why's our industry declining" when the automobile was invented.

teddy roosevelt actively worked to destroy the carriage industry?

LOL!

what about horses?

What I've said is that we would put a cap-and-trade system in place that is more -- that is as aggressive if not more aggressive than anybody else's out there, so if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can, it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted. When I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, uh, you know, under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.

did the prices necessarily skyrocket?

Bolded: oh you racist you. Suppose I said something similar about the black population in metros, you would be all over me. Dont stereotype people, its demeaning and ignorant.

I live in Central Illinois---its all farmers and coal miners. Im familiar with coal. As to your job theory, there is just one problem---the reason why coal is getting expensive is because the left is making it a campaign to make it so expensive that coal cannot be used. Its not that its obselete its that it offends leftist sensibilities on global warming. BTW West Virginia coal is among some of the cleanest burning, all the extra impurities appear mostly as you get further West. Are you sure you are versant enough on coal to be talking about it so adamantly?
