Dana Milbank: The Demigod Comes To Earth - The Washington Post

It began, like the Obama presidency itself, with the loftiest of hopes and the greatest of expectations.

The Democratic National Convention was to have opened here Monday with a festival at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, where, convention officials said, some 100,000 people would participate in a Labor Day festival that demonstrated the party’s openness and inclusion.

After a couple of nights at the Time Warner Cable Arena, the convention was to have closed with President Obama’s acceptance speech at the Bank of America Stadium, where convention officials were planning to squeeze nearly 6,000 seats onto the field to expand the stadium’s capacity beyond its usual 74,000.

But the speedway event was canceled — ostensibly because of logistical problems but more likely because convention fundraising was running low. Then the Democrats canceled the stadium event in favor of the smaller arena — ostensibly because of “severe thunderstorm” concerns but more likely because they couldn’t be sure enough people would come to fill the stadium.

In fact, the forecast hadn’t called for severe weather, and conditions were fine Thursday night. The change caused thousands to be turned away, and the crush of crowds at the arena led authorities at one point to lock down the building for a second straight night – leaving some delegates on the street while lobbyists enjoyed the proceedings inside.

It was quite a comedown from that heady night in Denver four years ago when Obama accepted the nomination in front of about 80,000 at Invesco Field. The candidate, on a stage set resembling a Greek temple, spoke about remaking the nation and the world.

The demigod turned out to be entirely human, and his results were disappointing. On Thursday night, as Obama admitted to “failings,” Democrats who dreamed of the biggest and the best in 2008 were learning to accept good enough.

wp's milbank, who has taken some heat for more than once taking the strategic preferences of then chief of staff rahm emanuel, with their implicit criticisms of his boss' postures, and passing them to the public as serious political analysis, here quotes famed folk rocker james taylor

"when you're down and out and you need a helping hand...

"and nothing, no, nothing is going right"

the "magic" of 08, the "energy:"

"i don’t think we can find 100% of it”

"the drop in expectations so steep"

a greatly diminished president heading for reelection in the worst economy of almost all our lifetimes

with a media far less "susceptible," as time's senior analyst halperin said a few weeks back, to doing what he wants

and with a jobs report out this morning that, as politico puts it, "the entire rationale for his campaign---that the economy is moving in the right direction, so just hold on tight---might be dead wrong"

Jobs report challenges Obama

obtuse obama thinks he's running against todd akin and the kkk

he's not, he's running against the headlines

what bill clinton would call the "arithmetic"

Good Lord, are you writing a book? I don't think Obama mentioned Star Wars, or Pigs, or Curly Fries.
I don't get your point. Does this have something to do with all the media talking about Romney not mentioning the Military or war?
I have noticed a trend. When Romney gets criticized about something, the far right lodges the same complaint againt Obama. When Obama does something good, the far right give the credit to Bush. When anyone brings up facts about how Bush let the economy drive off the cliff, the far right claims Obama is blaming Bush for Obama's doings.
Can't you people just let Romney stand on his own record? Also, Romney needs to grow thicker skin.

friday nyt:

Presidential candidates can usually count on luxuriating in a few days of warm feelings from their convention as they ride the high generated by impassioned supporters and cross their fingers for rising poll numbers.

But for President Obama, the party was brought to an abrupt halt before Democrats were done breaking camp here Friday morning with the government’s release of its unemployment report for August, which showed that the economy added 96,000 jobs — fewer than expected — * and the unemployment rate dropped to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent.

It was a blunt reminder of the forces working against him.

The Democrats inside the hall on Thursday night as Mr. Obama accepted his party’s nomination for a second term defined the race as a fundamental clash of visions between Republicans who want an every-man-for-himself society and Democrats who want to ensure that the middle class gets a fair shake — what Mr. Obama called “the clearest choice of any time in a generation.”

But that message of promise for the future is up against the immediacy of persistently high unemployment, which, as Friday’s report showed, is unlikely to drop so much before Election Day that it will recede as an issue.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/07/u...bama-convention-bump.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all

"recede as an issue?"

LOL!

only the uber libs at the nyt could possibly conceive a scenario in which unemployment, obama 2012, could actually "recede as an issue"

What was missing from Obama's Speech

President Barack Obama said a lot of things in his nearly 40-minute speech concluding the Democratic National Convention — but there were a couple of big topics that didn’t come up at all, or received only a passing mention.

namely: obamacare, stimulus, housing and voter ID

not remembered by roger simon's professional leftists and journolisters at politico: global warming, iran, chinese currency, and are you better off than 4 years ago

so many things the president can NOT talk about in public

why?

beware the hot mic

president's require flexibility

After that leading post, you don't get the point???

LOL!!!

The one I liked was Obama wanting to use the money saved by ending the wars to pay for other stuff.

LOL!!!

There IS no money saved. We've been borrowing the money. And it STILL has to be paid back.

You do know that's in the Ryan plan as well?

Ryan Budget Plan Produces Far Less Real Deficit Cutting than Reported — Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

If you dislike Obama's budget which was based on economic lies, you'll love Ryan's LSD fueled "path to prosperity." Obama took assumptions that were unrealistic and argued they were valid. Ryan took assumptions that only someone on a cocktail of controlled substances would think is realistic.

Some people confuse quantity with quality. Citing mostly bias sources such as "real clear politics" and "fox news.com" "the Washington times" and "Huffington post"and headline stories that twist words and use technicalities. Read the articles instead of the attention grabbing titles and check the facts, and you'll see they don't hold water. Citing all the companies that have failed with the stimulus and not mentioning one that's succeeded or saved. You invest 700 Billion in a stimulus plan across many areas and expecting every one of them to do well is like some one investing in a stock index and asking why 3 of the stocks went down.

Admittedly the speech was mediocre but his record isn't.

Obama DNC speech fell flat - POLITICO.com

john harris, editor in chief, politico---flat, oddly missed opportunity

"a surprisingly long list of democrats and media commentators described the speech less as a failure than a fizzle"

badly outdone by michelle and bill, at least

even edged by biden---LOL!

john harris---"a campaign defined by relentless, almost mechanical efforts to motivate voters with narrow appeals to specific constituencies"

"underscored the limits of obama's oratorical skills in the context of a grind-it-out campaign"

daily beast---dull, pedestrian, nary a theme, policy, even turn of phrase

john harris---such analysis is "representative of liberal commentary"

carville---certainly not the best speech of the convention

mother jones---no real passion, soldiering thru, nothing memorable, nothing forward looking

obama---"if you're sick of hearing me approve this message, believe me, so am i"

john harris---a long way from 08 which sought to bridge divisions, not stoke differences for political gain

ross douthat, nyt---flat, rote, unconvincing

peggy noonan, reagan speechwriter, wsj columnist---weirdly anticlimactic, tired, flat, somber, banal, stale and empty, outta juice

ezra klein, the immature metrosexual FOUNDER of journolist---modest speech, humble vision, humbled president

david gergen---very little in here promising jobs, lowered the bar

david brooks, nyt house rhino---unexplained goals, familiar, modest and incommensurate with the problems at hand

ryan lizza, new yorker---not specific, no legislative agenda, only goals, one million manufacturing jobs

tired, dull, worn, overused, empty, uninspiring, divisive, backward looking, tried, underwhelming...

many are suggesting he learned the contents of this morning's dismal jobs report BEFORE he took the stage

it sure looked like it

but then what ELSE could he say?

tick tock...

I could have sworn this thread is about Obama.

I guess some people...in their partisan zeal...just can't stop talking about Romney/Ryan.

So it goes.

Whoa whoa whoa. Real Clear Politics is biased? Its a news aggregate that presents stories from both sides. Huffington Post is biased left and Fox is biased center right. Do you have a coherent point?

Not being able to get good outcomes out of 700B is a reason not to spend it, not a reason to excuse spending it.

ap fact checks bill clinton's soaring speech (which only made obama look all the punier, clinton's purpose):

[W]hen former President Bill Clinton took the stage at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, he portrayed President Barack Obama as a pragmatic compromiser who has been stymied at every turn by Republicans. There was no mention of the role that the president and the Democrats have played in grinding compromise to a halt on some of the most important issues facing the country.

THE FACTS: From Clinton’s speech, voters would have no idea that the inflexibility of both parties is to blame for much of the gridlock. Right from the beginning Obama brought in as his first chief of staff Rahm Emmanuel, a man known for his getting his way, not for getting along.

One of the more high-profile examples of a deal that fell apart was the outline of a proposed “grand bargain” budget agreement between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner in 2011.

In another instance, Obama appointed a bipartisan group, known as the Simpson-Bowles Commission, to recommend ways to fix major fiscal problems like Social Security and Medicare. The commission issued its recommendations but fell three votes short of formally endorsing them. And Obama mostly walked away from the report. He later incorporated some of the less contentious proposals from the report into legislation he supported.

AP Fact Check: Bill Clinton stretches compromise storyline in DNC speech | jacksonville.com

about that grand bargain, have you heard about watergate wonderboy bob woodward's new bombshell book detailing the behind-the-scenes tergiversations of president punt?

don't worry, you will

ap also takes apart clinton's claim that the affordable care act keeps premiums down

the facts: "wishful thinking at best"

ap holds out hope, however, for cost control in the future---obamacare's rationing board, ipab, and the cadillac tax on higher premiums (exempting unions) are still to kick in

the facts: Unions Get Exempt from Cadillac Tax - WSJ.com

clinton: the economy is improving, like 1994 (me me me), americans just aren't feeling it yet

the facts: "clinton leaves out the abrupt downward turn the economy took near the end of his own second term and the role his policies played in setting the stage for the historic financial meltdown of 2008"

between september, 2000, and january, 01, the bubble burst---nasdaq, for example, fell 46%

1999---glass-steagall, robert rubin, and a flood of mortgage-backed securities (ie, crap)

clinton: romney says he's not gonna let his campaign be dictated by fact checkers

ap: the finger wag

ap, by the way, is catching a great deal of heck---from salon, kos, huffpo, et al---for bringing up that finger wag

why, by the way, in a convention devoted centrally to some imaginary war on women, did the party put front and center a serial abuser of ladies?

are women dumb?

ap puts president punt under its microscope:

President Barack Obama laid claim to a peace dividend that doesn't exist when he told the nation he wants to use money saved by ending wars to build highways, schools and bridges.

The wars were largely financed by borrowing, so there is no ready pile of cash to be diverted to anything else.

The claim was one of several by Obama in his acceptance speech Thursday at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., and by Vice President Joe Biden in earlier remarks that did not match the facts. A look at some of their assertions:

THE FACTS: The idea of taking war savings to pay for other programs is budgetary sleight of hand, given that the wars were paid for with increased debt. Obama can essentially "pay down our debt," as he said, by borrowing less now that war is ending. But he still must borrow to do the extra "nation-building" he envisions.

He made a similar statement in his State of the Union address, and it is no less misleading now than in January. And the savings appear to be based at least in part on inflated war spending estimates for future years.

FACT CHECK: Obama and the phantom peace dividend - Yahoo! News

next---obama's claim to strengthen medicare without requiring seniors to pay more

the facts: "some of the proposals the obama administration has floated in budget negotiations with congress would ask medicare beneficiaries to pay more: revamping co-payments and deductibles in ways that could raise costs for retirees and increasing premiums for certain beneficiaries"

he proposed raising the eligibility age to 67

"some level of increased costs for middle-class and upper-income medicare recipients is likely to be part of any future deficit reduction deal"

moving on, obama promises a million manufacturing jobs

the facts: obama "cherry picks" +500,000 factory workers in 29 months, but since january, 09, he's net -500K

he lost 15,000 more last month alone, including 7500 auto

biden: romney's territorial tax will ship 800K jobs overseas

ap's fact check: biden's claim is not supported by the expert, kimberly clausing, he cites

ms klausing: "my analysis does not speak to the effects on jobs in the us"

ap: "romney's proposal is actually aimed at encouraging investment in the us, not overseas"

obama: my plan cuts the deficit by 4T

ap: "resets the goal posts," "fancy budget footwork"

the facts: Obama PROMISES To Cut Deficit In Half By 2012 - YouTube

claim: 4.5M jobs created

the facts: "misleading," net jobs are down 700K under barack hussein

"never since ww2 has the economy been so slow to recover all the jobs lost in a downturn," not even close

the facts: 58% of the 4 mil added since the bottom of the v earn between 8 and 13 dollars per hour

Majority of new jobs in recovery are low-paying, study finds - latimes.com

politico this morning:

The emerging consensus on President Barack Obama's convention address suggests the wear of four hard years has taken its toll: that it was a dispassionate, ordinary speech that lacked the soaring rhetoric that Obama had led most to expect; that it contained modest content and sober promises colored by the president’s experience with reality; and that it featured the deficiency of setting out goals without offering out the specific means to achieve them.

DNC 2012: Analysts say Obama came up short - POLITICO.com

it was also exceedingly divisive

john harris, chief editor of roger simon's journolisters and professional leftists: "a campaign defined by relentless, almost mechanical efforts to motivate voters with narrow appeals to specific constituencies"

in other words, obnoxious obama actively and energetically seeks to pit one group of americans AGAINST the others

Obama: GOP Trying To Sell "Tax Cuts To Improve Your Love Life" | RealClearPolitics

"All they've got to offer is the same prescriptions that they've had for the last 30 years. Tax cuts, tax cuts, gut some regulations, oh, and more tax cuts," President Obama said at a campaign event in Portsmouth, NH today.

"Tax cuts when times are good, tax cuts when times are bad. Tax cuts to help you lose a few extra pounds. Tax cuts to improve your love life. It'll cure anything, according to them," he said.

how silly

I read that article and it was a complete waste of time

It's full of the usual far left false premises. The Obama Administration has been spending at TARP levels for almost 4 years.

TARP was supposed to be a one time expenditure. Obama's budgets have been laughed out of WA and the Democratically controlled Senate hasn't passed a budget since before the IPAD hit the market.

You've been brainwashed by a cult of Hope and Change

HuffPo: Obama Calls Tax-Cuts Deal the 'Right Thing to Do'

At Obama's side, Clinton backs tax deal - NBCNews.com

'You Don't Raise Taxes in a Recession' - President Obama - Fox Nation

In August 2009, on a visit to Elkhart, Indiana to tout his stimulus plan, Obama sat down for an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd, and was conveyed a simple request from Elkhart resident Scott Ferguson: “Explain how raising taxes on anyone during a deep recession is going to help with the economy.”

Obama agreed with Ferguson’s premise – raising taxes in a recession is a bad idea. “First of all, he’s right. Normally, you don’t raise taxes in a recession, which is why we haven’t and why we’ve instead cut taxes. So I guess what I’d say to Scott is – his economics are right. You don’t raise taxes in a recession. We haven’t raised taxes in a recession.”

Buffett Rule would barely dent debt - CNN.com

are you sure this guy knows what he's doing?

You want to pay down the debt? If you insist David Stockton has the way. A wealth tax on the $40 trillion nest egg the top 5% have acumulated due to low tax rates.

Stockman cites a remarkable statistic: “In 1985, the top five percent of the households – the wealthiest five percent – had net worth of $8 trillion – which is a lot. Today, after serial bubble after serial bubble, the top five per cent have net worth of $40 trillion. The top five per cent have gained more wealth than the whole human race had created prior to 1980.”

Stockman thinks there should be a special 15% surtax on the wealthiest Americans to help pay down the deficit.

Obama: 'You'll Love Me Even More' | Video

AUDIENCE MEMBER: "We love you, Obama!"

THE PRESIDENT: "I love you back. But let me tell you the fourth thing -- you’ll love me even more.

"Fourth, my plan would reduce our deficit without sticking it to the middle class. Independent analysis has shown that my plan would cut deficits by $4 trillion. And I’ve already worked with the Republicans in Congress to cut a trillion dollars’ worth of spending, because those of us who care about what government can do to help people give them a ladder up..."

see ap fact check above

and just wait til you hear what bob woodward has to say about that 4T in his "the price of politics" out tuesday

obama was in IA and NH yesterday, FL today

at least his last 10 stumps have occurred at colleges
