Why aren't we bringing our boys home right this very minute?? And why don't we care?

The United States and its allies are pushing to have Afghan forces take over security for the country by the end of 2014. This effort has been imperiled by the spike in insider attacks that have killed 45 international service members this year, most of them Americans. There were at least 12 such attacks in August alone, resulting in 15 deaths.

Training of these forces has been suspended to more carefully check the backgrounds of the Afgahi's we're training.

Another two years of this ****?

Um...we are.

The whole reason my unit was deployed was to assist the exit process.

If the Taliban would stop bombing us every time we try to move somewhere, we'd leave this ****-hole of a country very fast and not let the door hit us on the way out.

...and we don't wear ACUs in theater anymore. Find a picture that isn't quite so old.

Probably because there is no good solution. I think we have achieved everything we possibly can and should exit as soon as possible. The trouble is as soon as we do that those monstrous Taliban will be back in there crushing out any hint of freedom those peoplel have. It is a horrible situation and neither Obama nor Romney likely want to be in office when the inevitable wholesale slaughter of civilians takes place in the vacuum left by our exit.

Jerry, I wouldn't presume to argue with you while you are deployed. Stay safe.

Maybe they are saying they wish America would stop occupying and bombing their country?

If you want the Taliban to stop bombing you the smartest move would be to leave.

That is exactly when you should be challenging deployment.

We installed theocracies in Afghanistan and Iraq so lack of freedom for the people is the only logical result.

Right. Then the Taliban can go back to killing innocent, unarmed civilians.

I take it you've never been over here.

The psychological trauma of 911 is still in effect even though it is more subtle than five or ten years ago and many people still falsely believe Afghanistan had some type of role.

We have become complacent as a nation for being an imperial power occupying other nations and the number of soldiers killed and wounded is only a small percentage of our population and since the MSM has been refusing to push the issue most people don't even think about it and often when they do, they still aren't.

While my unit is all super-hooah about serving, we're all in general agreement that 1. Afghanistan itself sucks...seriously an invasion from Iran would do this place wonders..no plumbing, no waist disposal, no trash disposal, no basic personal hygene...and 2. America should have been out of here a long time ago.

Then I have to wonder why you would jump my ass when I say the end of 2014 isn't soon enough?? (That photo was posted up by someone on my Facebook page. Why criticize someone who likes to think she has your back??)

I take it you've never been over here.

Doesn't matter and the only reason you are trying to make it personal is to play a trump card that is so stale it makes Austin Powers' teeth look like the Orbit gum commercial girl.

If your unit left Afghanistan would the Taliban still be bombing you?

It's become a bit of a sensitive issue. We're working our asses off to get out of here asap, but folks don't take into account the fact that Afghanistan is land-locked. We were able to pull out of Iraq very quickly after the decision was made because we could use sea ports. That's not an option here. We have to fly everything out, and that takes a **** load of time and more money then God.

Why don't we leave "this minute"?

Because we can't!

There is no mother-ship to beem us all up and head out.

If you've never lived in a big city then you wouldn't know what it's like to go downtown at night or drive on a 'real' freeway with knotted bridges 5 and 6 high, or navigate the sky-way at night while it's under construction. If you've never lived in the country then you wouldn't understand what it's like to make a trip into town and why lunch at McDonalds might be a treat.

I don't know what it was like in Iraq and so I don't make assertions about it. You've never been to Afghanistan so of-course you have no idea what you're talking about when you comment on troop movements.

The deadline of 2014 isn't because we just don't feel like getting out of here sooner.

That's the actual soonest date we can be out by due to the sheer volume of equipment we have to move or destroy. All the while we're being attacked, and that slows us down further. We would get out of Afghanistan this year if only the Taliban would let us.

I agree completely, we have no reason to be in Afghanistan.

But you know what really pisses me off? That a charity has to collect money to help the kids who come back with their arms and legs blown off (wounded warriers). Why in the hell isn't our government taking care of them? why does it fall on a private charity? This is terrible. the govt sends them over there and then ignores them when they come back missing body parts.

WTF is up with that?

with all due respect, I think we could be out much sooner if the govt decided to do it.

People get tired of paying taxes for the military. I can't say I blame them. The happy medium to both cut taxes and take care of wounded vets are charities like the Wounded Warrior Project.

We're already calling in B-1 bombers to drop JDAMs on our bases as we leave them.

A more expedited timeline would cost billions in additional equipment we would have to incinerate in-place.

We're trying to take our toys with us, because we don't want to leave them for the next occupying military (China and Iran together) and we don't want to lose their value.

Yes that's right, Furiounova ,Occupy Afghanistan isn't over when the US is out. The Afghan government is much to corrupt for that.

I disagree, the govt sent them there, the govt put them at risk, the govt should be responsible for their care. Charities are great and should be encouraged, but the major cost should be borne by the govt.

people get tired of paying taxes for everything--mostly they get tired of seeing their hard earned money wasted by an incompetent government.

OK, you are on site so you have a good perspective on it. But it should not take two more years.

I've never been to Afghanistan so that means I have no idea what troop movement requires? That's like saying a Chinese firefighter wouldn't know how to put out a fire in Utah building.

If you think we will ever actually completely leave Iraq or afghanistan then you have no idea what the agenda entails.

The Taliban is stopping you from getting out?? Oh boy.

The pull out is being delayed until new events can justify the continued occupation.

It could be done in 8 months. Once the equipment has been moved to secured locations you use a security force and air power to protect it and considering the Taliban doesn't exactly have an air force and we have drones that run 24/7 it is inconceivable to claim the Taliban could counter the movement.
