Bush Administration Praised Closure Of Auto Plant That Ryan Now Blames On Obama | ThinkProgress

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) claimed during his convention speech Wednesday that President Obama is responsible for the closure of a GM plant in Janesville, Wisconsin. However, as many media outlets have noted, GM announced plans to close the plant in June ’08 — long before Obama was even elected — and it ceased major operations in December of that year.

For proof, just ask one of the more prominent supporters of the Janesville plant shutdown — the George W. Bush Administration. After all, the closure was part of a broader GM restructuring initiative that the then-President supported. White House Press Secretary Dana Perino even praised it as evidence of GM “adapting well:”

The White House called the announcement a sign that the auto giant was “adapting well” to market shifts.

“It’s a sign that Detroit continues to adapt and evolve and address the change in consumer tastes and attitudes. And I think that they’re adapting well,” spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

“And they’ll make these changes, and hopefully be able to pull themselves up out of what has been a rough several years,” she said. …

GM plans to shutter production at its Toluca, Mexico, pickup truck at the end of the year and its Oshawa, Canada plant will be closed in 2009. Plants in Moraine, Ohio and Janesville, Wisconsin, are slated for closure in 2010 “or sooner if market demand dictates,” GM said.

What does this have to do with President Obama suggesting the right kind of support would keep that plant and other GM plants open for a hundred years and then doing nothing to keep it open? I fail to see any connection at all.

We sure do play nanny-nanny-boo-boo a lot around here.

I don't get it. Are you for or against the Obama stimulus? If the Obama stimulus failed to keep this plant opened, isn't that something you should be happy about? Why are Republicans complaining that the Obama plan failed as if they were hoping it would succeed?

I'm not complaining about Obama. I'm complaining about those who call Republicans liars when they call attention to that speech of Obama's.

Does GM still own the plant? Can they retool and reopen it? Did Obama promise that with government help the factory would be around for a 100 years? Did the government help GM? Is the plant currently operating or not?

It has a lot to do with it, actually. Obama's goal was to save GM by helping the company restructure so that it would be competitive going forward. Part of that restructuring involved trimming product lines and closing less efficient plants. That's what happened to Janesville, and the decision was made before Obama even came on board.

This attack by the Romney team is extraordinarily hypocritical, given the fact that Romney would have let the whole company go down the tubes. It's like a doctor who recommended that life support be withdrawn turning around and criticizing the doctor who saved the patient because he had to amputate a couple toes to effect the cure.

My only comment here, Adam, is that in your analogy? IMO, the patient is simply in remission. ;)
