Radford business owner declines Joe Biden's request to stop in store - wdbj7.com

RADFORD, Va.—
Would you say no to the Vice President?
One New River Valley business owner turned Vice President Joe Biden down.
This might happen more than you think from both political parties, most businesses just don't talk about it. The owner of "Crumb and Get It" - did.
Chris McMurray's bakery has been open only since May, barely three months.
Wednesday morning, advance teams for Vice President Joe Biden walked in.
"I approached her she said Joe Biden is coming to town today," McMurray said.
"Crumb and Get It" is a mom and pop store. Literally. Chris and his wife Kelly run the place and need all the business they can get.
McMurray said the Vice President's entourage got to the point and made its pitch.
"She said they have selected 'Crumb and Get It" to be his stop on his way to Blacksburg and was wondering if that was ok."
Here's the part that might make other business owners crazy.
"This is an opportunity of a lifetime but essentially I said 'No offense to you or the campaign but I just decline you guys coming in here. At that time she said 'Are you sure? There's going to be a lot of press, a lot of activity,’" McMurray said.
"Very simply, ‘you didn't build that’” McMurray said. “Speaking of small businesses and entrepreneurs all across this country and actually last night my wife was up all night. No sleep, she's worked a full 24 hours."
When "Crumb and Get It" said 'no', “River City Grill,” just around the corner, said 'yes' and has the pictures to prove it, and didn't care about the politics.

Hmmmm, I have mixed feelings about this. I understand and appreciate the man's point, but I think he missed an opportunity to demonstrate Obama is wrong. It's very likely there would have been a quote from him in the papers, and he could have talked about how hard he worked to make this business what it is.

Re: Radford business owner declines request from Joe Biden's entourage to stop in sto

Agreed. It could have been an expanded Joe The Plumber moment with a lot of material for Romney/Ryan campaign ads.

I live in Uncle Joe's state. It's about time that Mr. Gaffe had someone stand up to him. When he made the comment about Indian's and Pakistani's here in DE, the local rag hardly mentioned it, and what it did say was that it was OK because Uncle Joe was speaking his mind. I wonder if the same rule will apply to this fellow. Methinks NOT ...

You didn't build [the roads.]

How do people still not get this?

As a note for those not from the Southwestern Virginia Area.

Radford (Well, the Radford/Blacksburg/Christiansburg generalized area) is the closest "heavy population area" next to Roanoke, VA where the "You didn't build that" line first became popularized. It's a 45 minute ride down I-81. As big as that story may've broke nationally, the little area of Virginia was buzzing with the sudden attention. Just a random tidbit to this.

Yeah...he did. He is a taxpayer as both a citizen and business owner. As a citizen and taxpayer he paid for every pebble rock, speck of tar and equipment used to lay it down. AS a BUSINESS OWNER he then put out the investment to build the business. Sorry...he DID build those roads and he DID build his business and no...the poor arent entitled to a greater share of his business efforts. Obamas rhetoric fails on every point.

So who else will have to pass his political purity test in order to be served in his store? "...and the sign said long haired freaky people need not apply..."?

If his politics are more important than his survival, he deserves what he gets.

ADDED: Slow Joe Biden is a Catholic that supports abortion. As a Catholic, that utterly appalls me. Were he ever to come in to my store, I would serve him like any other customer, and if the moment were right I would talk to him about his opposition to clear Catholic teaching on the issue.

Because that's not what The One said.

i missed the part where he refused to serve anyone

all i saw was where he declined the "opportunity" for his business to be used as a political prop by those whose views differ substantially from his own

He may be concerned what taking this job will do to the future of his business. He could be thinking that it will cost him local business, in the future.

Agreed... that's horribly in bad taste, and is going to set a bad precident of refusing people business, when we need more of it created...

It's like this whole Chick-fil-A thing... The CEO of a company has the right to his own personal political views... It's individual franchise owners who are going to be the ones getting hurt by protests against the store now... not the CEO... and thus all the people out their taking risk to start up business to create work, and help get the economy growing again are being punished over a bunch of idiots on the extremes of both sides...

IDK who is effected worst by this, but the Mayor of Boston made a huge fool of himself with this issue... A long serving restaurant in Boston had to move out, because they can't afford their rent... as the cost of living in Boston has skyrocketed over the Mayor's term... to higher than even in NYC... Now, there's a vacancy about to occur in the Blackstone Block... the nation's oldest commercial block in America... right across from the Faneuil Hall Marketplace... the 4th most visited place in America... Just another area of the city which is going to start looking like a ghost town under the Obama administration... Downtown Crossing, which was one of the major homes of the invention and the prominence of the Department Store... and is in the area downtown where all 4 of our subway lines cross... and yet when you walk down it, there's empty lot after empty lot... IN DOWNTOWN BOSTON... Which is supposed to be one of the most commercially viable cities in America... and the world... yet it's main shopping area looks like a ghost town... And instead of welcoming a new business that wants to move in to fill one of those spaces... The Mayor would rather take the opportunity to grandstand on a social political issue to write a letter to the CEO of Chick-fil-A to say that he's going to prevent them from getting the space, because of his views on gay marriage... It's not like Chick-fil-A doesn't serve to gays, or anything... It's the CEO's personal views... Yet, now when we need growth, the Mayor is stunting it yet again... in a stupid form of protest...

I wish this type of protest does not continue, or it could spell huge trouble for ALL of us, with the impact it will have on the economy...

You have an amazing grasp of the obvious, and so does Obama. But I'm not buying it given his political ideology. If a conservative had said it, then it would have meant what liberals want to portray it as.

I do not totally disagree with what he's doing. But there's a flip side of making that same kind of point as I stated.

Your assumption is that his being a partisan jackass will cost him money? The recent example of Chik-Fil-A would suggest otherwise. He may have done it because he thought it would bring in business.

He didn't build the roads. WE built the road and the bridges.

Tell me you understand that.

'We'? Are you in his pocket? HE paid taxes in his city and state. As a citizen, along with the other citizens, he paid his fair share...paid in full. Probably paid MORE than his fair share. He built his business. That is above and beyond ANYTHING 'we' laid down for infrastructure. TELL me you understand that.

Well if we want to get really technical, about a 1/3 of our spending comes from borrowing not taxes. So the Chinese also have an equal claim to said infrastructure.

Anyway, who the hell cares what some baker in Virgina thinks?

Re: Radford business owner declines request from Joe Biden's entourage to stop in sto

The Biden team asks 20 people if he could stop by and one guy goes running to Fox News "lookie what I did".

Wow, what a patriot...
