Since Saturday, right-wing pundits and media have been calling Ryan this great thinker/intellectual.

Simultaneously, there have been these comparisons to Ronald Reagan.

Note to right-wingers, you need to pick one. He can't be both, as Reagan was not a bookish great thinker. He was a great communicator for sure, and he attracted great thinkers, but there were no deep economic principles being tosses about in the Gipper's head.

Let me add this, if Ryan is such a great intellectual, how was he able to read Ayn Rand in his early years and not know she was an atheist who supported the absolute right to abortion? -- Here's a great piece about why Ayn Rand is so attractive to adolescents:

Ryan's problem: Ayn Rand turned Adolescence into a Philosophy

Growing up in the 1950's I knew Ayn Rand was considered tragic and insane. Certainly not someone anyone would base a national economic policy on. Yet it would appear the Republican Vice Presidential candidate has done just that leading to both Democrats and Republicans being energized by his choice.

The best definition I have seen of Rands work was on the Pink Flamingo Blog and was an anonymous quote that read,"If Objectivismseems familiar, it is because most people know it under another name, Adolescence. Many of us have experienced a few unfortunate years of invincible self-involvement, testing moral boundaries and prone to stormy egotism and hero worship. Usually, one grows out of it, eventually discovering that the quality of our lives is tied to the benefit of others. Rand's achievement was to turn a phase into a philosophy, as attractive as an outbreak of acne."

Groups, such as The American Values Network, are framing the debate with Paul Ryan's addition to the Republican ticket as a choice between Ayn Rand and Jesus. Rand identified organized religion as histories villain. You cannot see selfishness as a virtue yet be Christian, not when Jesus admonished his Disciples in Matthew, "That as you do unto the least of these you do unto me." This has been a staple of Christian charity and service for a long time.

Randroids need to grow up and realize the world is more complicated than they realize.
