In a USA Today/Gallup poll out today Paul Ryan is considered by 42 percent of Americans only a "fair" or "poor" choice for Mitt Romney's vice president— a higher number than that of registered voters who put Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin in the same categories after their selection was announced.

This can't be good for the Romney supporters who were hoping for a big boost. Now you know why us Democrats are delighted with the pick.

42% think it was a 'fair' or 'poor' choice. Huh...what is the percentage of Americans that approve of Obama's job performance these days?

They weren't asked that question. The question involves what they think of Paul Ryan....and for those hoping to get a big bounce out of this, it doesn't appear likely...and the more that people find out about Ryan, the worse it is going to be for Romney. I honestly don't know what the guy was thinking...but I'm happy. I was really afraid that he was going to go with Portman, which would have given him Ohio and would not have hurt him in Florida the way that Ryan will.

then 58% think is was a good choice. when I was in school, 58 was more than 42

Again, wish people would read more than just headlines.

If you look at the poll, nearly 40% never heard of him with 19% having no opinion.

In addition, they're comparing a general national adults for the 2012 poll to registered voters in past polls (1988-2008).

Overall, rather funky as far as comparison goes. If you compare polls, usually use the same type of poll, i.e. national adults, registered or likely voters.

Reaction to Ryan as VP Pick Among Least Positive Historically

Why are all the obamabots such pathological liars?

I guess they have to be just to lie to themselves that re-electing george barrack bush is good cause he has a "d" by his name.

You wish...LOL....take a look at the poll. It doesn't speak to good for those GOP'ers hoping for a big bounce.

"39 percent think it's "excellent" or "good"

Speaks to neither, 40% had never heard of him.

Actually only 39% rate it excellent or good. The other 19% have no opinion.

Still, I doubt this poll means anything at all, since much of the country still doesn't know much or anything about Ryan.

No...its just an initial poll of the immediate reaction...things can change. But first impressions are often lasting. I doubt Ryan's numbers will improve when people find out about him.

Why would anyone include a "fair" rating in with a "poor" rating...except to get some bigger number than is warranted.

I would hardly consider "fair" to have bad connotations.

yeah, i picked up on that too.

Even more bad news for Ryan, according to USA Today: "Only Dan Quayle in a 1988 Harris Poll of likely voters was viewed less positively than Ryan, with 52% rating Quayle as a 'fair' or 'poor' vice presidential choice."

I hope they take this poll after Ryan wipes the floor with Biden in the debate.

Probably will hurt, especially after they link some obscure conflict he had in his youth and try paint him as a bully. :lamo

Meaningless poll. Liberals are attempting to jump on this like it means anything. Regardless of who wins the election, more than 42% will not be voting for the winner.

When the Fantasyland Express gets back from Never-Neverland...

Ryan is terrible in front of crowd. He will never be able to hold his own with Biden.

This is a very unremarkable man we're talking about--the only way he could get attention was to purpose and extreme budget that the GOP owns and disowns simultaneously.

Yeah, polls are only valid when they show Romney ahead of Obama. I think we've seen the last of those.

Biden is one of the least intellectually capable men to ever hold the office. Far less intelligent than even Dan Quayle. Biden uses almost 40 years of experience in government speak to pretend he is intelligent.

he was a loser as a student, he flunked the bar and has been sucking on the public teat for almost all his adult life

no wonder why people like you worship him

Yes, you expressed that opinion in another thread--and still haven't backed up your allegations about him with any links.

Ryan will have his ass handed to him so bad it will be hard to watch.

EDIT: Nevermind, it appears as though they did, just well hidden.

Anyways, I would like to see the Gallup poll itself, but I can't find it.

If you ask an unbiased poll you should get a random sampling of America. It is LOGICAL if someone were an Obama backer they would disapprove of the Ryan selection. Since those numbers both sit right at about 42% Id say its not as dire a poll as the OP would like us to believe. And if you count the number of people that think it is a 'fair' pick he probably is doing pretty good actually.

You are incorrect. Obama backers by and large think that this is a fantastic selection. It is the moderate Republicans that are scratching their heads and saying WTF was he thinking!
