Mitt Romney Ad Criticizes Obama For Welfare Policy Romney Supported As Governor

Always a reliable tactic to get the base stirred up on the right- attack poor people. Really, just attack anybody that is less powerful. The smell of blood throws them into a blind fury.

Romney signed something looking to change the actual law to be more effective <-- this is how the government is supposed to function.
Obama's administration has went begging for states to come up with ways for the administration to preclude them from following the law. <-- is is not how our government is supposed to function.

Romney, along with other governors, lobbied for the ability to craft requirements on a state by state basis, if said states were able to shift 20% of welfare recipients onto work programs.

Obama, based off recommendations and requests from current governors (including republicans), allowed states to craft their own requirements, if said states shifted 20% of welfare recipients onto working programs.

Ok first off Romney is a complete ****ing moron. He keeps on going back and forth back and forth back and forth on so many issues it is ridiculous, and this welfare reform that happened a while ago is just one of many examples. All Obama has to do in the debates is run with this flip flop issue and bam i think he gots him. Thats why i keep on stating "just wait till the debates". We all saw Romney debate not wo long ago and lets be honest it wasnt to spectacular. Romney is running ****ing ridiculous flat out lie ads, not even half truths in them, just flat out lies. (But oh wait its not Romeny its the unknown SUPER PAC).

One more reason why neither of them deserve our votes.

Romney Accuses Obama Gutted Welfare in Ad.

Another dishonest ad from Mitt Romney:

Mitt Romney says Barack Obama’s plan for welfare reform: "They just send you your check."

The HHS memo

Since 1996, welfare has been administered through block grants to states through a program called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. TANF, as it’s called, limits how long families can get aid and requires recipients to eventually go to work. It also includes stringent reporting requirements for states to show they are successfully moving people off welfare and and into the workforce.

A memo from George Sheldon, the acting assistant secretary at HHS, said the department wanted to give states more flexibility in meeting those requirements. The memo notifies states "of the Secretary’s willingness to exercise her waiver authority ... to allow states to test alternative and innovative strategies, policies, and procedures that are designed to improve employment outcomes for needy families."

The memo outlined, using the jargon of a federal bureaucracy, the kinds of waivers that would be considered. It suggested projects that "improve collaboration with the workforce and/or post-secondary education systems" and "demonstrate strategies for more effectively serving individuals with disabilities," to give two examples.

I don't disagree with the fact Romney is exaggerating the implications of the memo.

My issue is with claiming that what Romney did was the same thing that Obama admin was/is doing.

No, Romney didn't exaggerate what Obama was doing, he is just plain lying about it. There is not a shred of evidence that the bill aims to let non-working people off welfare. Some Republican states lobbied to make the the requirements more flexible. Obama thought, 'hey republicans love state rights, there is not any way giving republican states more control over their own welfare programs can hurt me in this upcoming election.' The policy itself still maintains control and oversight over the new requirements to receive welfare. There are mandates that make sure people are still working to get welfare. Some of the flexibility comes in things like allowing people to receive welfare while working an unpaid internship (which is pretty amazing that it wasn't considered work before).

Literally all there was was baseless speculation by heritage foundation people that government bureaucracy would definitely let non-working people get welfare. They weren't basing things off of the aims or text of the new policy. They were just doing what you have been doing all along; drawing your conclusions first and then only budging slightly when the actual evidence proved those conclusions dead wrong.

Clearly, you haven't read the memo from HHS nor the May 19, 2005 memo Romney signed along with other Republican Governor Association members. I do believe both are linked in this thread. Go read up then come back with your commentary while fully informed on the matter.

Even Newt says Romney's a liar...

Newt Gingrich admitted Wednesday evening that Mitt Romney's presidential campaign has no evidence the Obama administration dropped work requirements from the nation's welfare law, contradicting a Romney TV ad released a day earlier.
