Eli Lake reports on the latest “politico fiasco” at the White House. Forget, for the moment, made-up executive privilege defenses and the serial leaking of intelligence secrets. How about inviting a member of an honest-to-evil terrorist group to the White House? Yup:

Included in [a visiting] delegation of Egyptian lawmakers was Hani Nour Eldin, who, in addition to being a newly elected member of parliament, is a member of the Gamaa Islamiya, or the Egyptian Islamic Group—a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. The group was banned under former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, and is now a recognized Islamist political party. Its spiritual leader, Omar Abdel Rahman—also known as the “blind sheik”—was convicted in 1995 of plotting attacks on New York City landmarks and transportation centers, and is serving a life sentence in a North Carolina federal prison.
What?!

This seems to be a monumental screw-up. Certainly, Eldin’s membership in Gamaa Islamiya (a designated terrorist group) should have raised a red flag and banned him from entering the United States, let alone snagging a meeting with high-level advisers. The State Department told Lake that Eldin was invited by the Wilson Center think tank. The Wilson Center said — you guessed it — the State Department invited him.

Acknowledging geopolitical realities, especially when nothing inimical to US interests has been done or proposed, when democracy seems to be continually moving forward, when constitutional government and a framework are still being hammered out, and when doing otherwise would be harmful to the US, is a positive act. None of the men involved have to my knowledge been accused of participating in terrorism or even political violence, and they appear to have foresworn violence and entered the civil political sphere. Is this not exactly what we want?

So the UN and US intelligence got it wrong in your opinion? I mean they are the ones that conducted the analysis and investigations on the claim that Iraq moved their weapons to Syria.....

was the UN involved in Oil for Food.. was the Karin A delivering groceries to Gaza?.. again how many months did Saddam have to get rid of the WMDS to HIS PARTNER ASSAD in Syria..... I don't think the ANC has been officially designated as a terrorist organization for a while. It was an error that he was still on the list as late as he was.

The thing is that sometimes groups end up being called terrorist organizations by the U.S. not because they are terrorists, but because it is politically convenient to say they are terrorists. I don't know whether that is true in this case or not. What I do know is that simply being called a terrorist by the U.S. government doesn't actually make you a terrorist, or even part of a bad organization.

I hear ya. But it wasn't the US government so much here as one of it's allies at the time, South Africa, that had them labeled as terrorists. We took care of the problem, and as you said, probably an error that Mandela remained on the list.

So are you calling the US intelligence and UN research a lie?

No, the U.S. government labelled them terrorists. They may have done it on the advice of their racist apartheid ally, but that doesn't excuse them from officially declaring the ANC a terrorist organization.

There are some clear parallels here. An opposition party of a shady ally government is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. government. Then that "terrorist" organization is democratically elected to power and the U.S. has to treat them as a legitimate political entity. It's a bi-partisan thing.

What did you have to say when GWB's chief of his Defense Policy Advisory Board, Richard Perle raised money for an Iranian terrorist group in Washington DC?
Did that upset you as well?
Or is it only bad when a Democrat does it?

you really have noi idea.. you are giving the "CREDIBILITY" by meeting with them..which cues others to try to take over a country and to expect the same recognition.. the photos are used as propoganda, Obama ( the POS ) would not even take a picture with Netanyahu.. as he didnt want Bibi to have a photo..

Is there a photo?

In any event, merely talking to someone doesn't give them credibility, any more than talking about them gives them credibility. You are the one making something significant out of Obama's actions. If anything, the terrorists will latch onto arguments like yours to show their supporters.
