I think I'm very much a liberal on social issues. Pro choice. Pro gay marriage. 100% for decriminalization of marijuana.
I do believe in the Second Amendment but I don't think everyone needs nor deserves fully-automatic laser guided smart weapons. Waiting periods and background checks are fine things to have in place. I believe there are times when the death penalty is warranted. I believe religion belongs in church and science belongs in school. I also believe religion has very little place in politics and government. The Bible is not a tool for governing the country and should not be used as such.

Fiscally I'm appalled at the debt we've accrued over the last few decades. I fully and totally blame both parties equally for this. I think America needs to get out of the "world's police" business and focus more on self-defense and self-defense only. Close most foreign bases and bring our people home. I like the Thomas Jefferson quote of "commerce with all, allies with none." I think both parties should be ashamed that not one head has rolled over the "mortgage fiasco" of the early 2000's. I'd like to see a national sales tax take the place of the bloated and insane income tax this country currently is floundering under. I think the size and scope of the government is far too large and I'd be happy to see some concentrated efforts on bringing the budget back towards something that makes a bit more sense.

Again - I personally blame both the Reps and the Dems equally for the financial sewer we're currently residing in.

So, the question I have is, who do I vote for?

Who is strong on a major fiscal turn-around, yet not interested on using the bible to control my personal life?
Who might want to restore the homeland to it's historic independence yet not be so quick to try to intervene in other countries affairs? Who can reverse the trend of over-spending by trillions of dollars yet be amicable enough to allow others the individual freedoms this country was founded on?

Help me please.

I would suggest that Willard "Mitt" Romney is your guy. Romney is a dyed-in-the-wool social LIBERAL. He may say some things you don't like, but don't worry; he doesn't believe a word of it and his record as Governor of the Communistwealth of Taxachusetts definitely indicates an absolute unwillingness to stand for ANYTHING Republican or Conservative on the social front.

Romney is also the guy who is SLIGHTLY more fiscally Conservative. You may not necessarily agree with everything he does, but he's the one more likely to get you to the fiscal place you want to be.

Just my thoughts.

Well, the question is are you wanting to cast a vote that, on principle, you can feel good about casting because it was for someone who represented your ideals.

Or

Are you looking to cast a vote that likely has some relevant impact of some kind on the election.

If it's the former, your best bet is likely Gary Johnson on the Libertarian Ticket who is likely the closest thing out of the mainstream 3rd parties that would fit you. If it's the latter...well, you're kind of screwed. Your best bet is to decide what issues are most important to you...perhaps even ranking them...and then seeing which of the two main Candidates hits the most of your important issues.

Gary Johnson is right up your alley.

No one individual has any relevant impact on the aggregate election, one vote won't change an entire election. Might as well vote your principles.

Obama is socially liberal and fiscally right of center.

I understand your quandry about this election, but I am not so sure Romney is the right choice. Will he receive support from Congress? Since Congress is pretty much really conserative since the 2010 elections I'm not so sure they will agree with him. He is really a moderate. I am going to vote for Obama even though I know Congress will not support him for sure. What may be more important than the presidential election is what will happen in the Senate. I don't think that both the Senate and Congress should have a majority. The elections will be close and too hard to predict in my opinion.

I don't see how you can label Obama fiscally right of center, he is clearly fiscally liberal.

Doesn't matter. The current system is socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

You should roast a BBQ, kick back, and stay home.

Obama is to the right of romney. Might as well go with him.

Sounds like your closest match is to vote Libertarian. Neither Obama or Romney are fiscally conservative.

I wonder if anyone ever calls themselves a social conservative/fiscal liberal? ;)

If you're looking to cast a vote in a presidential election and you think it will have some relevant impact, then you don't have much comprehension of statistics and probability.

Yes.

I've never pulled a lever for a rep or a dem in my whole life when it comes to the presidential elections.

I always try to vote for who I think would be best for the country.

Romney's history of governing on social issues looks like a social liberal. Or libertarian anyway.

Romney's history of social issues depends on what he is running for.

I dated a woman once who was one of those.

I do not think the spending the US does is the biggest problem, it is the tax cuts for the rich that is the problem. Why allow someone who makes millions to pay less than someone with a middle class job.

The solution is simple, stop pandering to the rich/well off and focus on the middle class. Being frugal on the spending is only one thing but if that is not combined with intelligent taxation the debt problem will never be solved.

Point is that Obama (with the help of congress) has been one of the most frugal presidents:

In fact, Obama has presided over the slowest growth in spending of any president in the past 60 years using raw dollars, and the second-slowest if you adjust for inflation.

But we also found that while spending is poised to be increasing by 1.4 percent per year under Obama, the debt will be increasing by 14.6 percent per year. The reason? Year by year, federal revenues haven’t been keeping up with spending, due to the struggling national economy (which has held back tax revenues) and a continuation of tax cuts. And each year there’s an annual deficit, the national debt grows.

PolitiFact Ohio | Jim Renacci says Obama has racked up more debt than any other president

The big problem is that the tax cuts have been kept in place in a time where the country just couldn't afford it. And for what? Trickle down has been a gigantic failure, having the rich get richer hasn't lead to a wonderful economy. The only thing that it has caused is that the rich have gotten much richer and that this hasn't really trickled down IMHO.

Data released last October by the independent Congressional Budget Office shows that, on average, those Americans among the richest 1 percent saw their after-tax household income rise 275 percent between 1979 and 2007.

Those not quite as prosperous but nonetheless among the top 20 percent saw income grow by 65 percent over that period. Middle-class incomes grew roughly 40 percent. And among the bottom 20 percent, income was about 18 percent higher in 2007 than in 1979.

PolitiFact Ohio | Barack Obama says income for top earners up 275 percent since 1979

I do not have a problem with people making more people than other people, but it is insane that they get the best tax breaks by far than the average people. And that problem will continue under a Romney presidency, it might even be made worse because he will have to repay all those rich people who have pumped all those hundreds of millions into his campaign.

Fair enough reason to NOT vote for Obama, which I didn't do in 2008, but that in no way is a suggestion for who I should vote for.

Its obvious you shouldn't vote for the person this guy votes for.

Obama-social=liberal
Romney-social=flip flop
Obama-fiscal=doesn't matter repubs will block
Romney-fiscal=not a conservative

I tend to be the same way- looking for someone more moderate socially, yet fiscally conservative. In this case, you won't find your perfect candidate. I look at it like this: What's more important over the next 4 years? Conservative fiscal responsiblity, or social progress. For me the economy, at this time, trumps the social ills. If that is the case, I can't vote for Obama because his last four years have shown no improvement and his programs are, IMO, going to damage the recovery for years to come. Romney is the more conservative fiscal choice.

I seen no indication, over the last few decades, that any republican has had any true control over spending and/or any true control over expanding the government.

I see no reason to believe a republican has any kind of grasp on fiscal responsibility.

They talk it real loud, but in practice they fail miserably at it.

Im new here but have been lurking for about a year. I havent posted because Im not as well spoken as some of you here.

These quizzes are usually not accurate, but they are kind of fun. I thought I definitely leaned republican but it says Im a libretarian.
