This morning, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced that the House of Representatives will proceed with a contempt of Congress vote tomorrow against Attorney General Eric Holder. Neither the announcement nor the expected outcome is a surprise. Republicans have the votes to make it happen and even some Democrats may support the charge that Mr. Holder's withholding of documents regarding the Fast and Furious gun smuggling operation rises to the level of contempt. But what is striking is that the words Speaker Boehner chose to summarize the situation are so applicable to so much about the Obama administration. "We're going to proceed," he said. "We've given them ample opportunity to reply."
With regard to the economic recovery, a newly inaugurated President Obama himself defined how much time would be enough to turn things around saying, "If I don't have this done in three years, then there's going to be a one term proposition."
His $821 billion stimulus bill was given ample time to deliver the promised results. But instead the unemployment rate spiked and three years later still remains above the 8 percent that the spending spree was supposed to prevent us from reaching.
President Obama's foreign policy based on engagement (remember "we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist"?) has been given ample time to improve our international standing. Instead it has brought about the weakening of American influence and seriously dangerous consequences. Witness an almost nuclear Iran, rifts in the US-Israel alliance, the deterioration of our relationship with Pakistan, the breakdown of the ‘no nukes for food’ agreement with North Korea and President Obama's full-throated support for the so-call Arab Spring with little regard for the potentially disastrous outcome.
President Obama and Congressional Democrats were also given ample time to push through his unpopular and obscenely expensive health care reform legislation. Whether or not the Supreme Court declares the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare) unconstitutional, far too much time, resources and political capital were wasted on that financially unsustainable and job-killing law. That's time, resources and opportunities for true leadership that could have been spent on issues like passing deficit neutral jobs bills, comprehensive immigration reform, a federal budget and seriously reducing the nation's debt.
Yes, Speaker Boehner's words ring very true; not just regarding the pending contempt vote, but the entirety of the Obama presidency. When it comes to the country's challenges, we have given the current administration ample opportunity to reply.
And we're going to proceed.
