Are you voting for a candidate or against one?

So many people I see, not just here but it certainly applies to many of you, seem to love making a case for a certain candidate or party by explaining why the other candidate/party is bad. The politicians are doing it too. It shows a serious problem with our country, with our leadership, when people are voting against a person rather than for a person. I believe that is where we are at. I am curious how many people feel the same.

Some of both. I was never a big Obama supporter(I supported Clinton over him) and he still has found ways to disappoint(right now some people who like to say stupid crap like "Obama worship" and "blind support" are having their heads explode). However, he is far from all bad, and he is significantly better than Romney. I do not however frame the question as voting for or against, but picking which option I prefer. I think the problem with your question is in how you frame it. No politician is exactly what I want, nor is any politician the exact antithesis of what I want, and I think this is true for most people. Like with any other option we get in life, we simply choose the one that works for us best. This is not a problem, nor is it a negative.

I guess I am voting against some one for this election. The only person I could have seen myself voting for this election was Huntsman. None of it matters though because I am voting in SC and for Colbert.

I generally find myself voting for the lesser of two evils. The last one I voted "for" was Reagan.

I not voting for either.

I suppose I fit your criteria since there's a by-election here next week. I want the incumbent gone, and I have a raft of candidates to choose from. Do I vote for my preferred alternative, who most closely reflects my views, or for the candidate who doesn't quite match up to what I want, but nearly took the seat last election?

If your voting 'against' a candidate, you should just stay home. It's the same thing.

Against, honestly.

I care little for Romney. The problem is I care even less for Obama.

It's tempting to just stay home, but it would bother my conscience.

I think many people vote against someone. It is the nature of our crappy two party system. If I were a registered in a swing state that is what I would be doing. I would check the box for Obama but I would be voting AGAINST Romney. But my state isn't a swing state, so I will be voting FOR the Green candidate.

I will be voting for and not against. Guaranteed. Every time.

Every time you choose the lesser of two evils you are telling our system that you wish to be represented by someone who doesn't truly represent you and therefore the representation gets worse every single election. Even though no one could possibly be 100% perfect for you, every vote is a 100% endorsement of that candidate... like it or not. I choose to vote FOR the one that closest represents my view. Doing any less than that is to vote to detoriorate our republic.

You might be casting your vote for Rosanne Barr then you know?

Always vote for the Person I want to win, not the Party.

Both! I'm voting for Obama and against Romney!

I'm voting against Obama and against Romney... So that means Johnson.

I voted against GHWB (Billy Clintoon). I voted against Billy Clinton (Green). I voted against GWB (Al Gore). I voted against GWB (Obama). I will be voting against Obama (Green). Even if it is Roseanne Barr, she would be an improvement over any choice in the last 30 years. We don't need any more lawyers and professional politicians (scumbags). I am certain a motivated janitor could do a better job than any of the past 5 presidents, except perhaps Bill Clinton. I don't like Clinton's taste in women, otherwise I like him just fine and the more poontang he gets, the better for him.

I've never voted against any candidate. That doesn't mean I've always completely agreed or thought the candidate that I voted for perfect. Usually, one stands for something or many things that matter to me and that makes it easy for me to vote with some enthusiasm.

Such is the case this time around and I will vote for Obama, again.

When both candidates are below par you vote against one.

In every election I've voted in I haven't been thrilled with the candidate, but I had reasons I could at least truly justify that I was voting FOR them rather than simply AGAINST the other guy. Even in '04, due to the ongoing wars I felt it would be better to vote for Bush.

In this one, it may be my first election that I actually vote because I'm voting against someone. Obama has got me near to that point now. There's little to nothing I significantly like, nor trust, about Romney. Right now the most likely scenario for my vote is 3rd party/write in or casting a vote for Romney in hopes of removing Obama.

well said.

That's the way I have voted for years. This election will be no exception.

Many years ago, Art Buchwald said it best. Most elections your choices are Tweedledum and Tweedledum.

Unfortunately I have never voted for any pres candidate, I have always voted against a candidate.

I won't ever vote against someone.

If I don't like you, you don't get my vote. Nothing more to it.

As much as I would prefer to vote for someone, there are years when you don't really have the choice you'd like to have. Personally, I'd like nothing better than to vote for Colin Powell. Unfortunately, he's too smart to want the job. Wanting to be President should be the first red flag against a candidate, but you can't vote for someone who won't take the job.

It's kind of like what Douglas Adams said about Zaphod Beeblebrox. Ideal Presidential fodder is the guy with the big ego and not much else.

So you end up with a combination. Sometimes you vote against the incumbent because he hasn't done his job very well, even if you're not completely convinced that the new guy is all that much better. Sometimes people surprise you. So I'm leaning toward Romney. I'm not convinced that he's all that great, but we know Obama isn't. I hope that Mitt is one of those guys who will do a surprisingly good job.

(God, I am far too cynical...)
