As Mater would say, Daggum.

Barack Obama has already held more re-election fundraising events than every elected president since Richard Nixon combined, according to figures to be published in a new book.

Obama is also the only president in the past 35 years to visit every electoral battleground state in his first year of office.

The figures, contained a in a new book called The Rise of the President’s Permanent Campaign by Brendan J. Doherty, due to be published by University Press of Kansas in July, give statistical backing to the notion that Obama is more preoccupied with being re-elected than any other commander-in-chief of modern times....

Doherty, who has compiled statistics about presidential travel and fundraising going back to President Jimmy Carter in 1977, found that Obama had held 104 fundraisers by March 6th this year, compared to 94 held by Presidents Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush Snr, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush combined.

Since then, Obama has held another 20 fundraisers, bringing his total to 124. Carter held four re-election fundraisers in the 1980 campaign, Reagan zero in 1984, Bush Snr 19 in 1992, Clinton 14 in 1996 and Bush Jnr 57 in 2004....

In the world of SuperPac's, not a surprise.

It's no coincidence that when you open the gate to unlimited campaign funding, you get more campaign fund rasers.

Re: Obama has held more fundraisers than 5 previous Presidents...combined...

Damn that Obama being actually good at elections...

Re: Obama has held more fundraisers than 5 previous Presidents...combined...

The Koch Brothers and Rove have been fund raising for Romney or whoever else won..since the day Obama got elected...SUPER PACS do the fundraising now...

So what? Really, is this breaking news? And I mean that in the important sense, not the actual DP rules.

I'm just curious for those that have a problem with this, how many fundraisers do YOU think a president should be allowed to have? Please by all means give a number.

Heard that this morning on the local news. The man wants to be re-elected really, really badly.

Re: Obama has held more fundraisers than 5 previous Presidents...combined...

He has also played more rounds of golf and games of basketball than any living president, makes you wonder how much time he actually spends being president.

Wouldn't it be great if he could just get his budget through the 2 houses? But for some unknown reason he can't, and our elected reps can't seem to pass a budget either.

Is this the breaking news section?

I am sure you know that Obama can't be involved with Superpacs. The note also starts with what he did in year one, before the supreme court decision.

Stop it with facts. You are ruining the talking point that Obama has to campaign to protect him those awful Republican SuperPACs......but don't mention the Democratic Party ones.

Re: Obama has held more fundraisers than 5 previous Presidents...combined...

The point went over the heads of some, so I will try and help. In an election where the amount of money spent is going to be measured in billions of dollars, fundraising is a key part of any campaign. So I repeat what I said earlier...

Damn that Obama for being good at elections...

Wish he was better at being president. If that was the case being good at elections would be more helpful America overall not just the Obama family.

Why do conservatives always demonize success?

I will give you a number.... ZERO

I think it is an absolute travesty that the person that raises the most money wins. IMHO that is BUYING the election. I would love to see campaign reform passed that limits the amout of money spent on a campaign.
I don't want a "Fund Raiser in Chief" or a "Congressman Moneybags" I want the elections decided on the merit of the candidates.

Campaign funding never used to be an issue with the Republicans - until Obama beat them at their own game!

I actually don't have a problem with your suggestion. The problem I'm highlighting though is mainly with the ones that thought it was ok for Bush to do this and are now whining over it and vice-versa.

Either they are both right or both wrong in this regard.

That's true for some, on the flip side though, there are some on the left that thought Bush was wrong and are now giving Obama a free pass on this.

I agree 1000%. Campaigns should be publicly funded with no private contributions. But Republicans have relentlessly pushed in the opposite direction, lobbying for more and more private funding, so that is what Obama has to deal with. And he beats them at their own game.

And who is the loser in this "Game"?

The American public!

You're preaching to the choir.

I agree, the more favors owed to donors, the less one can devote their time to "what is good for everyone"

Its killing our country.

Re: Obama has held more fundraisers than 5 previous Presidents...combined...

I just wish one of these swinging nimrods, would put half as much time on running the country as they do when running for office.

Romney spent $42.3m of own money
McCain reports raising $49m
Globe Staff / February 21, 2008

Before abandoning his bid to become president, Mitt Romney put in at least $42.3 million of his own money, a big chunk of the $97 million he spent on the campaign.

Mitt Romney, shown here after he suspended his presidential run Feb. 7, told the Federal Election Commission yesterday that he loaned his campaign $6.95 million in January alone.

Just how would you suggest that Obama compete against a candidate capable of contributing $42.3million of own money to his presidential campaign in 2008 - $6.95 million in January 2008 alone.
