Do You Care Who Romney Chooses At His VP?

Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall at meetings like this? I wonder who is on the short list, what they're saying about them, what they've found out about them, etc.

Yes, I'd love to be a fly on that wall, if only to count how many times "demographics" is mentioned.

you and 60 million other Americans - He's been saying that he doesn't want the job on FOX for months now.

Who else is definitely out for the VP slot?

I think Christie is on the list... he is basically campaigning for Romney

I can't imagine who would be a social conservative on the list. Pawlenty and Sanatorum can't be on it. Rubio won't accept, so who does that leave? Didn't the gov of Indiana also say he doesn't want to be Romney's VP?

of the names getting tossed around?

Sarah Palin, I think, we can safely say :). Alan West too.

Of those I would think would be unlikely to make the cut?

Nikki Haley and Chris Christie. First Term governors are problematic, and those both come with their own baggage.

Mitch Daniels is also uninterested :)(). But for understandable reasons - the way people were willing to go after Sarah Palin's children it's not as if they would hesitate at all in going after his wife.

Portman, Ryan, Jindal, McDonnel, and Martinez are probably still in the running. Martinez comes as a first-termer with "baggage" too, but it's positive baggage.

If you are planning to vote for Romney in the General Election, what difference does it make to your choice which person Romney chooses as his VP, assuming it isn't David Duke or someone equally FUBAR?

I just don't see how this could matter.

Explain, anyone?

Susana Martinez-a conservative minority woman with strong values. She's says she won't run if asked, but I think she is terrific!!!!

I would rather it not be Gingrich so we don't have to debate if it is wise to want a lunar colony or Santorum and his moral lectures and talk about women's contraceptive choices.

yeah, looking like it's down to Portman, McDonnel, or Ryan.

Allen? no. Let him win a race, first, and put the "maccaca" thing way behind him long before he'll be considered for a national ticket.

Who Romney picks as his VP running mate will make for a very interesting chessgame over the next few months. In many ways, more interesting that McCain's "hail mary" selection of Sarah Palin. Romney doesn't needs a "hail mary"....and so his pick will undergo a great deal of scrutiny. However, Romney's pick requires that he manuver a great mainy minefields. He needs a pick that will excite the evangelical right-wing base of the party. They all in all do not like Romney and so his #1 priority in selecting a running mate will be to find someone that makes him more palatable to them and allows him to shake his personal etch a sketch and move more to the center for the GE without pissing off the base. Second, I truly believe that Romney might select a woman. Political strategists have been saying for weeks that Romney's big big problem in electability is with the women's vote, which is why there has been so much about women in the news the last couple of weeks. Democrats know that this is his weaknesses and are going for the jugular. Republicans know it is a problem and have been trying to repair his image. Selecting a white male like Christie or someone in that vein is not going to help attract women voters. Romney needs to attract at a minimum 30% of the women's vote if he stands a chance of being elected....probably closer to 40%. Third criteria, Romney needs to find a way to appeal to latino voters. Latinos comprise a huge voting bloc especially in mainy of the swing states. People say Rubio will help, however, the more I listen to strategists the more I doubt that he would. The speculation being that latinos will not rally around a "cuban" candidate the way that GOP voters hope. Latino voters, like Black voters are likely to respond to the candidate that is closer to their political views, not their skin color.

That being said.....the vetting committee for Romney's VP is not going to let another Sarah Palin happen. I suspect that the candidate will be well vetted and will be prepared to help Romney in the battleground states come the fall.
