Is Mitt Romney the Most Unpopular Likely Presidential Nominee Ever?

Despite being a registered Republican who will not vote for Romney in the general, I suspect I'm in the minority. I have a feeling that the vast majority of Republicans will suck it up and vote for him. He is polling close to Obama. It's too soon to call, and anytime I see a poll within the margin of error, I don't really care that much. Being an uninspiring moderate will cause problems for him though. It will be harder to get donations and mobilize his base, which is critical for campaigning to independents. Romney is on a tightrope. He cannot alienate his base too much, but trying to play up his conservative credentials sounds about as phony as John McCain's attempts to do so in the general during 2008.

No, I think that might be John McCain - at least in my lifetime. I don't know anyone on the right who was excited about him.

McCain was probably more liked by moderates. Romney might of had that as well, but someone convinced him that if he didn't pander to social conservatives, he couldn't win.

Personally, I refuse to vote for anyone that panders to social conservatives.

If he is the nominee..I wonder who he will name as VP candidate?

Many GOP will want him to name Rubio in an attempt to cater to the Latino vote. But from what I know, I'm not sure that'll help.

He seems to owe his lead to being the least worst option.

Those Republicans who want to see Obama defeated will vote for the Republican nominee. Any other vote is a personal statement, of course, but also a waste.

I have a feeling its going to be mitch daniels. Conservatives have lost the hispanic vote....regardless if he picks Rubio. I also would not be surprised if a female is selected. Romney will have to work hard and play catch-up with the women vote....he will need to be about even with Obama to even have a shot at winning in November. While I do believe Republicans will rally behind Mitt Romney only for the purpose of beating Obama, I just don't understand how they could be against Obama policies but vote for his white clone.

It's gotta be Marco Rubio.
I think he should pick palin. He will need a strong social conservative that can energize the base to balance out his past liberalism.

He doesn't need a social conservative. He needs a fiscal conservative.

It def. will not be sarah palin, that would be a guaranteed november loss. I can't think of one person I know who would be ok with this lady a few heart beats away from the presidency, her national political career is over.

I would have to say yes and good luck winning in November... :doh

Is Mitt Romney the Most Unpopular Likely Presidential Nominee Ever? - The Daily Beast
This is the most ridiculous way to judge a candidate ever... favorability ratings...

Does anyone remember Ford?

How about his successor Carter, running for a second term...

Then there was Bush Sr, running for a second term...

How about Bush Jr. 2nd term, that was unfavorable. He was trying to roll out the excuse "we can't change a president during wartime" to keep his position. Many were worried so much about him losing they even attempted to pass a law that you couldn't change the president during wartime.

There are also the forgotten names... Adlai Stevenson, George McGovern, Barry Goldwater, Alf Landon, etc...

Besides who really liked Walter Mondale?

Howard Taft running for a second term...

Andrew Johnson, the 17th president, and the first president to be impeached was the "eventual nominee"

Mitt Romney has much more support than any of those aforementioned names... and he will get more once Republicans wake-up to the fact that he is the nominee...

.

Johnson wasn't the eventual nominee for anybody. Everybody hated him. Democrats hated him because he ran with Lincoln and was anti-secession. Republicans hated him because he was a Democrat. He was also a virulent racist, and all around unpleasant asshole by all accounts.

Most definitely...Romney IS "Barry lite"

Romney is not close to Obama. Obama is the most far-left president ever. Romney isn't a bad guy, he loves this country, and IMHO he would do what is best for our country. He is certainly not perfect, but he is a good man, and actually cares about the constitution, unlike Obama.

It's true he didn't get the nomination... but in the month's leading up to the convention it was still thought that Johnson was going to get the nomination... there was unrest within the party but no clear alternative... then it was shocking when Johnson came up second on the ballot in the first round of voting at the convention... once people realized that it wasnt going to be Johnson, they pretty much left him for dead...

We aren't even at the convention yet, we are several month's prior... and Romney has over half of the delegates that have been awarded... Plus, there are major delegate heavy prizes still to come in states where he is heavily favored... He won in almost ALL of the battleground states (NH, FL, NV, AZ, MI, OH, VA), and in almost ALL the winner take all states. When he had "must win"s, he won them...

Republicans need to get off this stupid doom and gloom about Romney crap and report it like it is...

HE IS A STRONG CANDIDATE...

You are almost to the "shut-up-and-drink-the-cool-aid" stage...;)

Of late, I have been more and more disgusted with politics. It has become more party oriented than whats right or wrong. I guess leaning towards one party or the other is ok, but when it gets to following your parties beliefs even though it's against the very people that voted you into office, something is wrong. Now issues are not about what good they are, but about what the party thinks they are.

Obama is NOT a far-left president...he's barely left at all...he would do better with his party if he were more left...

Without a doubt, the GOP is putting up the King of the 1% to lead the charge against the 99% at a period of the greatest disparity of wealth since the Great Depression.

This will be an historic, as well as a poetic, loss for the GOP.

this is laughably idiotic. You seem to think all the top one percent are on one side and everyone else is on the other

what side is Kerry on> Pelosi? Kohl? the Kennedys? Jay Rockefeller? etc

give it up, your wishful thinking of a revolt of all but the top one percent is just pathetic

you represent those in the bottom 99% who blame the rich for being failures

those who aren't in the top 1% but who work hard to be, won't ever vote for your defeatist vision of mediocrity

Our Virginian Gov, Bob McDonnell has been grooming himself for the pick, and he would bring redneck Southerner cred to the ticket that Romney lacks.

Anyway, I sure hope he's picked, so we can get him the hell out of Virginia! :)
