Republican White House hopeful Rick Santorum had his "Made in the USA" campaign messaging adorning the hood and quarter panels of Tony Raines' No. 26 Ford Fusion in the Daytona 500.

"NASCAR and the Daytona 500 are about as American as you can get, and it's great to have my campaign represented by one of these incredible machines," Santorum said in a press release. "The race weekend is a wonderful tradition that we're excited to be a part of as we spread our message. I like how Tony Raines turned some heads last weekend with his qualifying run, and we'd like to keep turning heads, too. I think we're both looking for a win in the end."

The trouble for the Santorum campaign, though, is that no one seems to have advised the campaign that the Fusion is actually made in Ford's Hermasillo, Mexico factory.

Asian And Detroit Brands: These Are The 5 Most American Cars

American as Apple Pie and Chevrolet? Oops.

Apparently it has more to do about foreign corporations than place of production.

Honestly, the world has nothing to lose from globalism anyway. Competitive prices and outsourcing bring and capital back home, and stimulate global investment.

I think Toyota, Honda, and many other manufacturers have proven just that.

Err, thanks Top Cat. I have no clue what your point is though.

I will never buy a car from a foreign company, regardless of where it's manufactured. Nor will I buy a car from an American company that is assembled outside the US. My 2008 Chevy HHR took almost a month to locate because not many were produced here in the US. I don't believe any of the HHR's are now.

Foreign companies and production doesn't hurt American markets- if anything, it only helps them by allowing greater corporate flexibility.

Neither are you hurting US employment, so I must ask why?

that santorum sponsored a car with a made in America theme, which model of auto is assembled outside of the USA

Yes of course we both know if Obama had said such a thing, you would have most certainly ignored it. Even though it would have been played to death on Fake News.

I mean really? You need this explained to you?

Ugh, as much as I hate Santorum, this really is not a big deal, at all...

Doesn't even warrant a thread on DP.

Yes I do. I have no clue what your point is. Is your point that Obama did the same thing and was scrutinized on fox news?

Yes I do. I have no clue what your point is.

Of course you don't. You can't connect the dots between suggesting a Ford product was made in America as if he was being patriotic in some way. I mean my first grader can paint with numbers. apparently that is a stretch here though.

Honestly who are you kidding?

Where did he suggest the Ford product was made in America? All I'm seeing is a Nascar driver sponsor and a statement about Nascar being "about as American as it can get."

Oh, and I'm also seeing AOL talk about how the model is made in Mexico, but I don't see how that's relevant to his statement. Nowhere did AOL quote Santorum stating that the Fusion was made in America nor is any other news outlet I'm finding reporting that. Further, I don't see what point you're trying to make except "I found an article that explains how his name is on a car made in Mexico." Of course, that would be such a stupid point I give the benefit of the doubt that you actually have something of substance to state.

Not everything that America makes is worth buying quality wise, or is more expensive - sorry to burst that little economic bubble. Complex interdependence and the global market are here to stay. If people cared about "made in America", Walmart would go bankrupt.

Your apology knows no bounds. The symbolism of Made in America is what it is. He was trying to play the card and didn't do his homework. It really isn't that tough to understand. Unless someone's lips are glued to his ass.

Luckily that people outside of the US do not hold such antiquated ideas or else the 2008/1929 stock crashes will look like minor incidents.

I am an Isolationist and a Nationalist. I do not believe that we should be doing business with foreign countries. Therefore only American assembled cars whose profits are going to an American company will get my money. It's that simple.

So be it. If we cannot take care of ourselves we deserve to be left to wither and die.

Give it a rest buddy. Insulting people doesn't make your point for you no matter how many times you do it. I'm not apologizing for anything because I'm not even completely sure what I'm supposed to be "apologizing" for. If your point really is that the model is made in Mexico then so be it.

Sorry, I was looking for an actual quote from the candidacy itself, not just conjecture from AOL. I found it myself as well:
Santorum Blog

It was particularly hard to find, given how difficult it is to operate a computer from behind the buttcheeks of a middle aged man.

When one asks inane questions without actually reading simple English they should be shocked. Or act shocked.

There's a reason US car companies are doing so badly...

Someone else didn't do their homework:
"To show her support for American workers, President Obama's labor secretary, Hilda Solis, has junked the standard black limo and purchased a new Chevrolet Equinox to ride around Washington in. The problem: the crossover SUV is built and assembled in Canada from parts also made in Canada.

Solis proudly arrived at a media breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor today in the shiny silver vehicle, which she has dubbed the "bullet." She was asked about why she traded the standard-issue limo for the SUV. "What better example could I set if I encouraged my staff to go and purchase and seek how we could acquire a vehicle that would for me would send a signal that we're for supporting our American workers, American-made products, fuel efficient as well," she told the Monitor's Dave Cook. ...

Solis added that she was inspired to buy the Chevy because of the pride she saw in American auto workers during trips to U.S. car and truck plants. She said that she was wowed by "the pride that they take making our automobiles here in America."

The car is made at two Canadian plants and has been so popular that General Motors has been hiring more workers in Canada to keep up with demand.

Are all the workers US citizens ,or are all the parts, technology, and designs made in the US?
