I just read that the Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said that the elderly in the Netherlands are involuntarily euthanized. Santorum made the statement earlier this month during a panel discussion in a church in the state of Missouri, as evidenced by pictures that surfaced today. He said that 10 percent of the fatalities in the Netherlands are caused by euthanasia. Figures show that in reality, this is a little over two percent. Moreover, he said that half of the euthanasia cases in the Netherlands is involuntary. The truth is that you have to go through a lot of trouble to become eligible for euthanasia and it is therefore nearly impossible to get euthanized involuntary. He claims that involuntary euthanasia is the reason why Dutch elderly are afraid to go to Dutch hospitals and are therefore going to hospitals abroad. Furthermore, in the interview he said that Dutch elderly carry straps with the text: "Don't euthanize me". I have no idea how people can actually believe that, but apparently they do.

All of the statements by Rick Santorum listed above are far from the truth. What I am wondering is, how can you believe in a man that has to lie in order to convince people of his believes? If he thinks his believes are the best ones, he should be able to convince the voters with his true arguments.

Yours faithfully,
a Dutch citizen

That's really not even that bad of a lie compared to the big flaming ones that have already been said this campaign season.

Furthermore, it's campaign season. Politicians who don't lie lose badly. Example? Gary Johnson and John Huntsman. It does not pay to be honest and reasonable in a nomination process.

I'm sorry to hear that. It's different here in The Netherlands: if a politician lies like that, the media (and therefore the voters) will destroy him/her.

Not surprised in the least, but do you have a source?

Colbert called Romney a serial killer.

'nuf said.

I'm sorry, was that on Comedy Central, perhaps?

Read the news lately? There was even a thread on this forum talking about his superpac ad.

And you still don't get the joke? Really?

Edit: I forgot that republicans used to think that Colbert was one of them.

In this country, he becomes the Republican nominee for President.

They also tend to live in no humor zones.

As a Dutch person I must say that I do not like mister Santorum's remarks.

The facts he mentioned are all wrong, there is no "do not kill me" bracelet anywhere to be found.

The only bracelet that is known (and it is as yet an experiment) is a bracelet (red) that people who have a DNR in place can wear to make sure they are not revived against their will.

Rick Santorum lying his way up

Given that Santorum takes pride in cultivating his role as the protector of traditional Christian values, one might have assumed that the "truth" would have been one of these values!

isn't written in the bible:

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

and

Psalms 101:7, "He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight."

So the man who says laws come from God decides to lie when it suits his needs, that is not OK in my opinion.

Have you guys though wether Santorum was just mistaken, rather than lying?

Am I to take that the problem here is that his percentages differ from the official ones and not that the government is killing people?

Romney is a serial liar. Romney will say anything and do anything to get the nomination. Newt was 100% on the money when he said that if Romney could buy the Presidency, he would.

So would Newt. Who's he kidding?

Ah mah goodness! A politician lying and exaggeration things? Say it isn't so?!

Also, where is the source?

Simple, in the Netherlands 136,000 people died in 2010, according to Santorum 10% of them were unvoluntary euthanized according to him and another 10% voluntary. That would mean that 20% of all dutch deaths would be euthanasia. Meaning 27,200 would have die from that cause. The actual number is about 2,700 and that would be 2% and not 20%.

Facts like that are easily found out if one were looking for facts.

It could be an oversight or just a big blunder by which he multiplies the actual figures by a tenfold.

But then we come to the lying part in which he states half of all euthanasia cases are euthanized against their will which a lie that would rank on politifact "pants on fire". Another big whopper of a lie is that elderly patients are wearing bracelets saying "please don't euthanize me". Also, our elderly do not flee our country for other nations so that would be another lie.
