"By the way, I'm in this race because I care about Americans. I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich. They're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of America, the 90, 95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling. I'll continue to take that message across the nation."

Romney's 'Not Concerned About Very Poor' Line Has Legs : It's All Politics : NPR

In context, the quote sounds less callous and ridiculous. However, the context does not erase how out of touch he seems, not only with Americans, but also with the lessons learned in Public Speaking 101. This will bite him and will be replayed in many pro-Obama ads later on in the election.

His clarification of the quote is at the source.

He desperately needs a teleprompter.

It is never wise for a politician to proclaim that they do not care about any citizen - let alone entire classes of them.

Maggie was right on - the man needs a teleprompter.

Darn. When I first saw the pull-quote, I thought he MIGHT have said something I could agree with. Apparently not.

In context there is nothing wrong with what he said. It will be taken out of context and used against him. Politicians need to learn things like that, they should know better.

He wouldn't be on my dodge ball team, hell he wouldn't even get to drive the team van. I bet his choice in radio stations sucks. I bet you'd be all on about it if he wore a knock off Commando tshirt for a game of cricket. Hes a douche, he fakes the funk.

Not suprising at all, even in context it's ridiculous because he wants to get rid of that "safety net" for the poor anyways. I truly believe he cares nothing about the poor.

Nor should he. Most of them are there because of mistakes THEY MADE THEMSELVES. Let them reap what they have sown.

Exactly. There's nothing wrong with his statement what so ever, but it was dumb politically to state it. Why? Because your hyper partisan hacks that don't care at all about being factually correct, honest, or fair but just seek to spin thing for their side will latch onto the headline and make stupid statements like this

Duh......he's a Republican.

Maybe so, maybe not. Not all really poor people are there because of themselves especially these days. Many have no luck finding work in a harsh economy, maybe they were laid off from a great job but have no skills in other areas but don't have the money to go back to college because now they are strapped. What about all those orphans that once they turn 18 they are on their own and have virtually have nothing and one lay off could put them in the streets. How about all those disabled vets who come home and cannot do much of anything at all because of war injuries, I could keep going of course. Mitt Romney and his republican friends would seek to abolish any help to any of these people.

Chris Matthews had a great commentary on Romney the other night in which he talked about how he was born into wealthy and privilege and never quite has had to know anythign else. Mitt simply lives in a world that 98% of Americans do not live in. And 98% of Americans do NOT live in his world either.

That's just simply not true. Democrats and Republicans alike support public assistance in many different forms. In fact, with all of our complaining, I'm guessing we're one of the most compassionate nations on planet earth. Your choice of absolutes is partisan hackery.

It would be nice if the poor people would just pick themselves up by their bootstraps, head over to community college and turn themselves into Mitt Romney..*not quite so possible

Remember that the lower-middle tax brackets are the ultimate consumer--nearly everything they earn is put back into the marketplace and diffused by purchasing at several outlets. There is low lever purchasing power that should be considered.

Of course not all Republicns believe this way, but most of the ones in your party in power today believe to abolish most if not all that assists these people .

Sorry Zyph....but I wasn't relying on the one part of his statement....rather....the history, including the current history of the Republican party. The GOP has never been concerned about the poor or the middle class of this country...that just simply is the fact.
The Republican party has always been about ensuring that their base is protected, that the rights of corporations over the workers are protected and that the working class is kept hungry in order to provide a vast pool of workers who will work for minimal wages. That is the Republican system and Romney fits right into it.

Don't kid yourself Maggie.....Most Republicans would do away with every form of public assistance tomorrow if they thought that they would be able to.

Since we're all alluding to the complete quote, I'll just post it:

"'I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there,' he told CNN. 'If it needs a repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich ... I'm concerned about the very heart of America, the 90-95 per cent of Americans who right now are struggling.'"

I welcome any attempt by the media or the president to bring this up in a negative context. Romney will have an easy time rebutting it.

Dammit, you stole my joke when I saw his post. I bet he will come up wiuth some really stupid justification for his comment.

In the words of Laurie Anderson: "oh boy, right again".

true, but he was quite stupid to make that statement.

Typical liberal spin on a quote taken entirely out of its context.

I should expect better, but I gave that up long ago.

Want to bet that it makes it into one of Gingrich's "liberal" attack ads in the next two weeks?

That's rich considering all the jabs from Gingrich and Romney towards each other.
