WOW. If he gets the nomination he will be set to run in every state.

Gary Johnson will quit the Republican primaries and seek the Libertarian Party nomination instead, POLITICO has learned.

The former two-term New Mexico governor, whose campaign for the GOP nomination never caught fire, will make the announcement at a press conference in Santa Fe on Dec. 28. Johnson state directors will be informed of his plans on a campaign conference call Tuesday night, a Johnson campaign source told POLITICO.

I was hopeful that Johnson would be a candidate to pull both disgruntled GOPs and Dems together and appeal to independents - and let this election go to a third party.

After reading a bit about his views, I'm thinking he will pull disgruntled GOPs if Romney is the nominee, but doubt he will appeal to most independents and Dems.

Wait a minute. Is this a new version of the old "if a tree falls in forest...." schtick?

Oh thank God! Here I was living in fear that we, as a party, would be denied the GOP castoffs to represent us! This at least gives me some hope of that distant dream that Bachman might see the light and lead us to days of greater glory!

Well this is absolutely shocking news! To discover that some guy named Gary Johnson has been running for President all this time?

Good for him. He can enjoy that .5% of the vote that will come his way

I liked this because it was funny, but for the indirect reference to my party's effect on the general election, let me just say "Hey! You're mean!"

I seriously just woke my wife up laughing at this post. Hardest I've laughed at a post on here ever. Thanks bro lol.:lamo

Glad you liked it. :)

On a serious note, though, this guy really got screwed over by the GOP. How does a popular, two-term governor and successful businessman with excellent conservative credentials not have at least as much credibility as a Michelle Bachman or Rick Santorum?

No.....not really lol. I didn't mean I purposefully woke her. I woke her up laughing:lol:

Okay, seriously. I honestly had never heard of Gary Johnson and now, I feel like an idiot for it. I read a little about the guy and I can't believe he never gained any traction in the race. The reason I say that is......have you seen the GOP field? There is not homerun candidate in a year when we really need one. I think Johnson would be an excellent candidate. We need a guy with a heavy veto pen in the White House. Does he have a scandal or something that we don't know about? I know about his drug legalization thing but Ron Paul says the same thing and he's doing decent. To be honest, I think he and Paul would cancel each other out. Anyway, does he have a scandal in his past or something?

Wow. I can see why he never got any traction as a Republican.... He's at best a Moderate and from a quick perusal of his view on issues should be more at home with the Democrats than with Republicans. So the Libertarian party and it's 5-8% vote tally is the perfect place for him.

If you don't know how to play the "tit-for-tat" game you'll never get the tit. That's his issue...not a team player.

By the time Ron Paul accepts that he will not be the Republican nominee, Gary Johnson will have the Libertarian nomination and Paul will fittingly be left out in the cold. One less person - who polled roughly as well as Buddy Roemer, for pity's sake - in the GOP field and no place else for Paul to go once voters reject him for the second time in two cycles.

You answered your own question when you said that Paul and Johnson cancel each other out. There are not a lot of strict libertarian voters inthe Republican party. They are courting the same voters and Paul has a lot more name recognition and established support than Johnson. Sadly, I think Johnson is a little better at articulating his stances than Paul, at least in the interviews I've seen. But both of them have positions so far outside the mainstream that they have little if any chance of being the nominee let alone the President.

so much for the republicans only hope to unseat Obama

That will ensure, by draining votes from the Republican nominee, that Obama gets elected again. This is not a good move. Republicans should encourage Dennis Kucinich to even things up by running as a Green candidate again.

As for myself, I will most likely vote for Johnson.

Wow, I'm actually going to get to vote in this election if he wins the nomination.

How can you say it's "not a good move" but then endorse it with your vote?

How exactly will Gary Johnson winning the Libertarian nomination for president allow you to "get to vote" in 2012? Are you ineligible to vote otherwise?

I think he means that he didn't vote before because there was no candidate that he liked. Nothing wrong with that IMO.

Oh no? The Libertarians weren't running a Libertarian candidate before Gary Johnson decided to switch party affiliations? Gary Johnson (or Ron Paul for that matter) hadn't been running as a Republican prior to this news? Is the candidate field so poor for libertarian voters that they are willing to stay home unless Gary Johnson is the Libertarian Party candidate?
