newt is down in iowa, paul is up. there absolutely doesn't seem to be one candidate you all can get behind. so, which candidate will cause MORE republicans to stay home next November?

and as an aside, why do newt's colleagues seem to despise him?

I'm not a registered Republican, but let me see if I can shed some light on this for you....

There is no one candidate that everyone can get behind because the Republican Party is no longer a single entity. It is probably three or four entities at this point, all with their own agendas and ideologies. Therefore NO current candidate is going to be able to bring the entire party together in 2012. As for who will cause the most Republicans to stay home.... probaby Ron Paul.

Not even a republican but I can tell you as an Iowan flocks are heading to ron paul for what appear to be no reason but they like his name. I literally asked a neighbor who had 'ron paul 2012' signs in their yard why they are voting for him

"For what he represents" they said
"What does he represent?"
"...."

Seriously. But back to the point. I can tell why. The point of the Caucuse is to find our who they are going to get behind not the candidate themselves.
Summary: They are fighting over the right to competefor the presidency for the the republican party. Of course not everyone is going to agree on one person that would scary as hell.

because Newt is anti-establishment.
r
As for Newt vs. Paul, I don't think most care. It's Romney who we don't want, who the insiders actually support.

I doubt people will "stay home" if their ideal candidate isn't selected during the primaries. Just like not having an ideal candidate on either side in 2004 and 2000 didn't keep people from voting. People will vote against Obama as surely as they'd have voted for their ideal candidate. Just like people voted against Bush and McCain as much as they voted for Kerry and Obama. You should be addressing this question to independents, moderates, and centrists.

newt is anti-establishment? lmao! he's an insider's insider. but your choice would be not romney?

no, i really wanted to know what people who identify as republicans thought. i don't think paul, or newt, will have much pull with moderates.

Why? The people that are too confused to know what they believe (moderates, centrists, independents) will always show up and vote for someone, whether he be a liberal a conservative or a marxist.

here is my point: republicans seem desperate for a candidate they can embrace.

I....don't really think that's the case. At least not based on what our self-identified posters have to say about it.

The more important question should be for the Libbos: Which Democratic candidate is going to make Republicans, Indies and even some Democrats turn out in droves to vote his ass out of office.

This is a nomination process. We are deciding who is best for the party's candidate next year. I don't find it odd at all that the lead keeps changing. Did you find it odd that Dems couldn't decide whether they wanted Obama or Hillary.

Bottom line is that we will get behind whoever the final nominee is, and it looks more and more like it will be Romney. That would be good news because he will easily beat Obama. A president running for reelection when 70% of the citizens believe the country is headed in the wrong direction is not in a comfortable position.

And yet again you, like many on the right, make the mistake of automatically assuming that just because 70% thinking Obama isn't doing as good a job as he should, that 70% will somehow support a GOP candidate. Wrong assumption to make on your part.

He said that having such a high number of citizens expressing a negative view is a negative for the incumbant. That's true. It pretty much always has been. Sure, it doesn't necessarily grant a GOP win, but it certainly makes it a bit easier to get one, doesn't it?

so far, the incumbent looks a lot better than any other candidates. i think it's goning to be tough unless romney runs, and then it will still be uphill.

Really?? Where exactly did I make a claim remotely like you say I did. Let me refresh your short memory:

A president running for reelection when 70% of the citizens believe the country is headed in the wrong direction is not in a comfortable position.

Do you actually think that the Obama reelection mob is happy that over 70% of the people think he's doing a lousy job ??? Do you think they are in a comfortable position ??

Looks a lot better to you maybe. Luckily, you don't represent the majority of Americans.

in fact, i probably do.

And I'm sure you are wrong.

Want to look at some poll numbers on the percentage of liberals, moderates, conservatives ??

Or how about the numbers who claim to be Democrats, Independents, or Republicans ??

i am talking about the majority that will vote obama back in.
