Gingrich Plan Gets Close Look (OUCH)

They don't exactly have an all-star lineup to choose from, and Huntsman is perceived as too moderate.
The GOP has some decent candidates; but Newt? Really??

Personally, I think the Republican party has become too fragmented to elect anybody as president at this point. Their only prayer is if the economy tanks between now and the election.

What's bad for the country is good for the GOP.

Well, personally I think they will have a pretty good field in 2016. It's just that the current crop is pretty meh. If I were a rank-and-file Republican primary voter I'd probably go for Gingrich too.

I was really hoping they'd run Perry.

I still find it distressing that still, for the GOP, the most pressing issue is defeating Obama. Not solving the debt crisis, concluding military actions abroad, or raising employment levels...no. Just beating Obama is number one. Everything else can go to hell, so long as they beat Obama. In fact, everything going to hell would likely be a BOON, in that it might help them beat Obama. Very telling mindset, that.

I think what it boils down to is that, above all, what the Republican base wants is someone who they think will thumb his nose at Democrats and not compromise on anything. Clearly Romney is not that guy and Huntsman isn't that guy either. They remember Newt as the guy who thumbed his nose at Clinton and shut the government down. Never mind that it cost the Republicans the next election, or that most Americans are looking for just the opposite.

Since everyone seems to hate the rich the simple plan would be a up-front tax on goods and services period. Billionaires spend in a week more than I make in a year just to light their house, so they would bear the brunt of the tax like everyone wants...it would be sooooooooo democratic to do this because the percentage would be the same for everyone. Remember there would be no withheld taxes, so your take-home will be more...just be careful what you buy though because a 10% tax (which would be more than fair to everyone) will mount-up as time goes by.

Poor people spend a greater portion of their income on things than the rich do. Having only a tax like you describe is actually regressive. The end result is that the rich would have a lower tax burden as percentage of income... is that the system you want?

um...what? We already have an "up-front tax on goods and services." It's called a sales tax (in the states that have it). What you are describing is actually regressive because lower-class individuals spend a greater proportion of their income.

Currently, our Budget is 40% Debt Financed. The Gingrich plan to slash Govt Revenues by 35% ($850 Bil) would make that 60%!
As some have noted that's beyond the Pale. Turning the already dubious Laffer Curve into even More of a 'Laugher' that it already was.

The House is the only government entity passing anything.

Yea.. and the Senate and Obama blocks anything the House passes because...

the House is full of Tea Party nutjobs with zero sense of reality or compassion!

Because Republicans in the Senate filibuster pretty much everything these daze.

Colonel Richard Wilkerson, retired, fomer Chief of Staff to Colon Powell, speaking to Rachel Maddow:

The only way I can explain it, Rachel, is their hatred of President Obama. And I say that with some circumspection.
They want to defeat this man. They want to bring this man out of the White House. They want to embarrass this man. They want to put this man through every kind of turmoil they can possibly put him through politically.

So, they will take almost any stand even -- and this is what really grates on me as a Republican -- even if it is not in the interest of this country, they will take a stand and have repeatedly taken stands that oppose the president simply because they oppose the president.

It's not America. It`s not the United States. It's not our best interests. It's certainly not our national security interests. It's getting rid of this president.

That is political opportunism and political blindness of the first order. And it may cause me to leave this party eventually, I must say that. [...]

Any issue you want to pick, my Republicans seem to be intent on suicide.
