The thing is, he hasn't described himself as an extremist. He believe government have a role, he hasn't been very clear what that role is. If you have followed, he has modified his 999 plan with justification so it is now progressive. He has been pretty harsh against Occupy Wall Street, but I don't think that is a dealbreaker among independent. Many independents think he is right. He hasn't said much about foreign policy and he keeps quiet about social issues. Two very very different groups of the electorate. To win the primary nomination, he needs to appeal to the right. To win the election, he needs to both hold his base and expand to the middle. And he would find that nearly impossible. Thus the reason why an extremist can win the GOP nomination but get creamed in the general election.
He can expand to the middle like other candidates, if he is an good campaigner and he needs to be to win the nomination.
