I have heard some talk that at this point, Gingrich is running more for a VP slot than for president. Whether that is true or not, it did get me wondering. Do you conservatives think Gingrich would be a good VP candidate for any of the other republican candidates?

Not really. Too establishment for the Tea Party, too right-wing for the moderates, too much baggage for everyone else. I can't really see what he would bring to the ticket.

I'm personally hoping for Bobby Jindal as VP, especially if Romney wins the nomination (which looks increasingly likely).

Really, Jindal? I thought he had dropped kinda out of favor.

He's just been focusing on being governor rather than campaigning for higher office... which is just another point in his favor, imo. I think it's too bad he never entered the race, though; I can't see any reason why he wouldn't be a better choice than Romney (or anyone else running). He's young, Indian, smart, and conservative, so as a running mate he could excite conservatives who aren't so eager to vote for Romney. And let's face it... unfair though it may be, having two old, white men on the same ticket wouldn't do much to help the GOP's image.

That's what they thought about Nixon.

Jindal's been quietly making a comeback.

Touche.

I had not been aware he had made a comeback and he would be an interesting pick.

I don't think he is eligible. I'm going to need a long form birth certificate. ;)

Is this thread about Jindal or Gingrich? Let me know, so I know what we're going to talk about.

he just won reelection with over 60%.

Gingrich is there to represent the party in general - I think he's probably having a good time; and hey, from now on when he goes on talk shows he gets identified as "Former House Speaker and Candidate For President". Is he shooting for a VP slot? He'd be good at it - the Veep's basic role is to sell the Pres, and Gingrich is a good salesman.

Gingrich would be a good VP. So would Huntsman. I doubt Gingrich would help a potential presidential ticket. Not sure about Huntsman.

can't stand the man personally.... but he'd not a bad choice for a GOP VP.

the VP job is basically useless... he's just the on-deck batter and elected spokesperson.
Gingrich does know his way around congressional rules and such, so he would be a capable President of the Senate.

I have to admit that he's rather intelligent, so that's a point in his favor.... but he's an absolute lout of a human

real or not, thats the perception. He might help a ticket with the GOP faithful but whoever is the GOP candidate...they will need the independent vote to win. I dont think it will matter frankly.

I dunno. if the candidate is Romney, he needs a VP that will get conservatives to vote for him. Otherwise they'll sit out or run a third party campaign.

Gingrich could be a useful VP. He has tons of political experience, contacts and so forth.

I don't care for him for Prez, so much.... too much the politician. Doesn't mean he can't be useful.

Gingrich is extremely intelligent and a great idea man. He knows politics like the back of his hand. As VP it would be interesting to see how much involvement in the Senate he would have.

Gingrich presiding over Reid...now that would be interesting.

that is an interesting thought - i could see him stepping much more naturally into that role than the traditional VP duties.

I've been saying for a while that if its a Romney or a Huntsman type that gets the nomination. To a lesser extent he'd be good for Cain as well to help with the experience gap. I think he'd have big problems as the top man on the ticket but would do great as VP

Side conversation...I would pay money to watch Gingrich debate Biden.

As a democrat, I would prefer not to see that happen.

Though Biden is not stupid, and does not do horribly in debates. But good lord, when he gaffes, he does it all out, and he would have at least one...

If he knew his boundaries (something he struggled with in the past), he would be a terrific person on the inside. I would very much like a man to be another strong-armed VP, like Cheney.

Vice president does not preside in the Senate. He can't even debate in the Senate. His only purpose in the Senate is to break a tie vote, and that is it.

I've always thought debates were over-rated to begin with. First, the format always ends up lacking. Second, just because someone isn't dominating in a debate means absolutely zero regarding their intelligence and ability to thoughtfully make quality decisions on a daily basis while on the job.

Andre Marrou, the 1992 Libertarian Presidential candidate, said the VP does have the Constitutional authority to preside in the Senate, and that his VP would do just that.

I don't know if he was correct, just throwing that out there.
