AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Wednesday he opposes his state allowing specialty license plates featuring the Confederate flag - despite his past defense of the historical value of Confederacy symbols.

To be honest, the issue of Confederate flags on license plates in Texas is an extremely controversial one. Some might call this a flip-flop on Perry's part, but I don't think so. I believe it's an honest change of mind. It happens to all of us. I have changed my mind on issues over the years, so I am not going to be a hypocrite and fault Perry for it. Also, for the record, although Perry has supported the Confederate flag in the past, he is not a racist, as some people like to claim. Most who support the Confederate flag are not racists either. As much as I dislike Perry, I am not going to go down THAT road. Whatever Perry may be (and I have called him a lot of things - LOL), a racist he is not.

Good for him. I applaud his integrity & intelligence on this issue.

The CSA flag is one of three things: a symbol of racism, a symbol of treason, or a symbol of ignorance.

Am I being too cynical if I question the timing... and thus his true motivation... on this decision?

It seems to happen a lot more frequently to people who are running for president. Just sayin.

Most of them are dumb hillbillies who only fly that flag because they know it pisses other people off.

I've lived in the South almost all my life and see car decals and bumper stickers but have never seen a "Confederate" flag flying. I'd like to know who actually has.

racists & bubbas.

You certainly have a narrow view. Unless, of course, you're just kidding or trying for some reason to get a rise out of people.

you are right. I meant: racists, those who fantasize about leaving the USA, and deniers of Confederate history & slavery-minimizers.

I may just be warming up to Perry after all.

You would think he supports the confederal flag. he once contemplated succession and the confederate flag is a symbol of rebellion and treason.

I think this is a flip-flop on his part. While the supporting the confederate flag might help him in the south, it would hurt him nationally.

I havent seen any

I live in Richmond, to those of you who slept during American history class, the Capital of the Confederacy, and I can't recall the last time I have seen a confederate flag. I'm sure there must be some. I have seen more Mexican flags, both here and in Colorado, than I have ever have confederate flags. But, I have read more insulting and racists comments on this thread than I have seen in the 45 years in Richmond, and they are coming from those who describe themselves as liberal. I have read dumb hillbillies, racists and bubbas, tea baggers, and a couple of others. I don't know much about the Confederate flag, but as I understand it, it was the symbol of the losing side in a civil war a hundred + years ago.

Lighten up people, the OP is the question of whether Perry chose to eliminate the confederate flag from those permitted on license plates as a campaign gesture. To the question, I would have to guess that is probably the case. A lot of presidential candidates do things such as this during the campaign. I can't remember which one it was, but I seem to remember one in a recent election that stopped going to his church of 20 years and threw the minister under the bus, but then he was probably just tired of the church.

shamed to say it, but there was one flying on Father Capodano Blvd. on Staten Island in NYC. I wanted to throw rocks through the guy's window.

I also saw two pick-up trucks with CSA flags as their rear plates. and saw one upstate.

In an election actual racism isn't nearly as important as the perception of racism.

As the great-great grandson of a confederate soldier I find all this flag talk to be a vehicle for personal agenda. The confederate flag was hijacked years ago.
Time to just move on. The Civil War was a brutal war and there really isn't much to celebrate about.

You really need to find something worth being offended about. Being offended by a flag or what it may or may not represent is well... moronic in my humble opinion. It's a flag for goodness sake.

But...but...but...what about his rights?

By that logic, so is the United States flag.
