Rick Perry may skip some upcoming Republican presidential debates, according to campaign officials.

Mr Perry is confirmed for a debate on 9 November, one of more than half a dozen scheduled before the end of the year.

His performance at previous events has hurt his standing in the nomination race - he has said they are more about "stirring up" than true debate.

A recent poll of Republican voters saw the former governor of Texas fall to fifth place among the candidates.
"We haven't said no, but we're looking at each debate," campaign spokesman Mark Miner told the Associated Press on Thursday, adding "while debates are part of the process, they're just one part".

Mr Perry does not hide his distaste for debating, preferring direct appeals to voters and an up-close style of campaigning that lead to his successful gubernatorial campaign.

"These debates are set up for nothing more than to tear down the candidate," he told Fox News on Tuesday.

Good strategy or is he running away?

he does have a valid point about these debates simply being a means to "stir up" crap....

these debates we witness are about as real as professional wrestling, but meh, that's what Dems and Reps want, so that's what we get.

People want to see their candidates on TV. Therefore we have things like the debates. Call them what you will, but currently they are an important part of the electoral process.

Good strategy or is he running away?

Yes. It's both.

He's proved to be a horrible debater because it's harder to stick to his message when people ask him "gotcha questions", i.e. questions that his prepared answers don't work for.

as i said.. this is what Dems and Reps want.... this is what we get.

Oh ... no. Please, Rick .... don't. Now that he's not running, what will I do? Who will I vote for?

For him its a great strategy when your half braindead and overwhelmed by your opponents its a good move for you to avoid it....but really it doesnt matter what he does...hes done..

That has what to do with his decision to not attend debates?

Not necessarily anything. As I said, I thought the poster to whom I was responding might be interested in the link's context.

I think Perry has already given up.

However, he needs to restore his image, if he plans to run for anything again.

If he is trying to restore his image, then it is for personal reasons as he cant loose in Texas. The gerrymandering of districts and voting in Texas by the GOP has assured GOP power for ever. That is why he is so bad in debates, he has no need to debate in Texas since his victory is pretty much assured.

Yes, he can lose in Texas. Not in the general election, but he can lose the Republican nomination. In fact, he probably will.

If he was a smooth debater, he would already be the winner. He may be thinking about running in 2016.

Perry is dead. Has been for at least three weeks now. This is an excellent illustration as to why the nation needs a hell of a lot more than just two or three debates in the general election.

Well, if it's something hard, he shouldn't be forced to do it. That's how the world works isn't it?

Its running away and its good strategy. It'll likely hurt him, but has less of a chance than hurting him most likely than actually doing the debates

Its interesting that he just came up with his tax plan now. Why not during the bloomberg debate on the economy?
