Obama Raises More Than $70 Million

No, I want to say which campaign gets my money. I don't want my tax money going to someone like Obama, or Al Gore, or some other Leftist clown that wants to take my rights away.

There's nothing in the Constitution about this being a government of the government, for the government and by the government.

An impartial electoral commission? And, who pray tell is going to hire those people? The government? Yeah, that's going to work.

You make some good points but the problem is apdst the current campaign financing laws aren't working.

Why?

I believe the answer is simple, the current laws are nothing more then institutionalized corruption. You simply made corruption legal. A corporation can give as much money to a candidate as they want in exchange for that party/candidate enacting laws once elected in their favour, and thats one of many reasons things are so screwed up. And both parties are guilty as charged, bought and paid for... it's so obvious yet so many people ignore it.

Congress no longer enacts laws for the good of the nation, they enact laws for the good of their financiers.

Obviously, you fail to understand that the money has to come from somewhere and The People would be the obvious source.

Obviously, you fail to understand that there are a lot of people out there who lack the funds to donate to a political campaign, which means that the people with money and the people are not the same thing at all.

As Mitt Romney announced raising 17 million bucks for his campaign this quarter, Obama beats him by 53 million.

It is no secret that Republicans are corporate whores, but it seems to have been a secret that Democrats are also corporate whores. Not any more. The cat is now out of the bag. This is not government of the people, by the people, and for the people. It's government of the money, by the money, and for the money. let's just put all this pretense aside and be honest. A long time ago, we decided that corporations were people, but you know, we just didn't go far enough. So I am writing my congressman and asking him to introduce a resolution to make dollar bills people too, with all the Constitutional rights inherant. And, while we are at it, let's not forget about the real people that are trumped by money in our system. They should count as three fifths of a vote, for the purpose of representation, of course. And let's move the White House to Wall Street too.

The money in politics is disgusting, but the money given directly to candidates is only part of the problem. The bigger problem is the unlimited money that comes from the ill conceived Citizens United decision by the SCOTUS. The Constitution needs to be amended to prevent this.

The first time around, the corporations weren't sure that Obama was gonna play nice with them. They're sure now.

Actually, it's not, because if I want to contribute to a political campaign and that campaign has already reached it's limit, I've been denied my chance to participate in the democratic process.

You're not being denied anything. There are lots of ways to participate in the democratic process. Main one being voting. Another main way would be to donate your time by actively campaigning on behalf of <insert politician here>. Like writing to your local newspaper so that your voice may be heard in the opinion section. Contacting the campaign manager of <insert politician here> to see how you can help. Etc Etc. Heck just being on this very forum and reasoning for your politician is actively participating in the campaign process.

You don't need money to support your favored politician.

Exactly. Limiting bribes isn't the same thing as limiting free speech. If you couldn't donate a dime to a campaign you could still spend your time on forums arguing for your candidate, or volunteer for his or her campaign, or put a sign in your yard, or write letters to the editor, or do any number of things to express your support.

The corrupting influence of big money political donations has got to stop.

From the article:

"He said more than 980,000 people have given money to the campaign, and in the most recent quarter, 98 percent of the donors gave $250 or less, with an average donation of $56."

I would be curious to know how many donors contributed to the $17 million Romney raised and how the average donation compares to the $56 average for Obama's donors.

$56 average for Obama donors? Ya'll still spillin' that propaganda? I'm sure that $5,000 a plate fundraiser Obama had last week had sonmething to do with him hitting 70 million bucks.

Let's see your source that refutes the numbers in the OP???

Two guys, $600,000 in one article. I rest my case.

Obama Fundraiser Pushed Solyndra Deal From Inside - ABC News

What case? Your article doesn't refute the numbers in the OP.

"How hard is this? What is he waiting for?" wrote Steven J. Spinner, a high-tech consultant and energy investor who raised at least $500,000 for the candidate before being appointed to a key job helping oversee the energy loan guarantee program."

Where does it say where that $500,000 in fundraising came from?

I was surprised hes raising this kind of cash...given his poll numbers. In the end I guess it comes down a choice between two ideologies more than two individuals.

Obama's getting some of his stimulus money back.

Do you have a problem with people buying politicians under the guise of "free speech" or not? On one post you're arguing for the very system Obama is taking advantage of and the next criticizing Obama for playing the game.

Contributions for the GOP side will grow once they're focused on on candidate. Obama is pretty much assumed to be the winner of the Dem primary process already. I don't think it's and apples to apples comparison at this point.

It falls into the 2% that is not small donations. Small potatos.

It seems about half of Obama's contributions are small, private contributions. 600,000 * $56 = $33.6M
What proportion of GOP/Romney contributions fall into this category?

Thats weird, the math doesn't add up.

$70,000,000 * 98% = $68,600,000 <--- amount in small donations

$68,600,000 / $56 = 1,225,000 donations.

Thats twice as many as 600,000.

Well I think it's because he's running unopposed in the Democratic primaries. He can tour the country and pretty much get ready for the General Election next fall. Whereas Mitt Romney and the rest of the GOP field still has to battle it out. I think once the GOP nominee is decided (probably Romney) the fund raising will be more equitable

the OP link says 98% of the total number of contributors gave an average of $56 -- it does not say 98% of the contributed amount came from the 'over 600,000' small contributors.
