Just so you all are clear, SYG and profiling played no part in the trial.

Zimmerman never invoked his SYG defense.
There was no evidence that Zimmerman profiled Trayvon.
And he was found not guilty on grounds of self defense.

Well, somebody had to start a thread about it. Thank you.

There's been so much misinformation floating around DP on this issue. Ya' know, I know we have posters here who are smarter than average bears . . . and yet so many great posters don't get it. Or is it that they don't want to? *shrug*

SYG was part of the deliberations therefore part of the trial. Fact. Title of thread, not true.

Trial and deliberations are two separate things. Zimmerman never invoked his SYG rights.

I think they're all part of the same process.
There is trial, then there is deliberation. There is also a plea that had nothing to do with SYG, trial part with nothing to do with SYG and determination that had nothing to do with stand your ground.

A day later and we're still arguing this?!

SYG as a short hand reference for the relevant Florida statute was part of the defense - the statute was the entirety of the defense.

SYG as a concept that says you do not have a duty to retreat if possible, nor do you need to be fearful to exercise your self defense prerogatives was not part of the defense.

Remove the duty to retreat and forcible felony clause, retry the case and you get the same result.

Excpet that he waived the SYG provisions of the laws of self defense.

That's kind of my point. This was a straight self defense case. If SYG didn't exist the case would have ended in the same result.

The only reason this is being discussed at all is because

a. SYG is now a short hand for the totality of Florida self defense law and,

b. People with an axe to grind with SYG are incorrectly, whether out of ignorance or otherwise, using this case as a poster child or how bad SYG laws are.
