If you can do so safely, when outside your home. But let's be honest, who in the hell would want to live the rest of their life knowing they killed someone when they could have easily moved to safety and had the police arrest the man? Any person who WANTS to kill someone is not someone who deserves to live in society.

There is a difference between WANTING to kill someone and refusing to embolden criminal behavior by allowing themselves to become a victim.

It is even worse when a society creates laws emboldening criminal behavior by refusing to allow individuals to defend themselves.

As having been a police officer for 7 years.... I am well aware that the chance the police will arrive to defend you in time is probably less than 5% of the time. People should not be put in a situation of either depending on the government or becoming a victim at the mercy of criminals.

You watch too much TV. Criminals fear law abiding citizens with guns. If someone kicks in my door and I fire off a shot at them from my gun... chances are in the high 90% that they will flee....as even they know there is nothing in my house worth dying for.

To claim there will be a firefight, as default, is absurd.

So lets break down the choices looking at the Flight or Fight Model.

Flight:
With a family: High chance of not succeeding when young children are involved (especially in a 2 story house where the stairs end right in front of the front door).
Individual: Running away is easier.

Fight:
High likely hood you either damage a door or wall with a bullet hole and the perpetrator flees
Somewhere in there is a chance you kill/wound the perpetrator.
Low chance you get killed or start a "firefight"

Police RARELY ever get there in time to do anything useful. Unless you live in the high crime areas that have 20 officers in a 7 square mile area in larger cities.

I blame it on him talking to the fat girl on the phone. Had he just been walking alone, he reaction may have been one more of preservation than aggression.

Sorry to interrupt your lovely conversation, but I wanted to say that I just watched a documentary on gangsta rap, and the way you talk is just like the rappers/pimps/criminals in the documentary acted. They had this "badder than you" persona that they were willing to die just to keep up, and it's exactly the way you are. You would die just to avoid looking like "a sissy." Hell, with your mentality, I wouldn't be at all surprised. It's just ironic to me that there are these two opposite sides that are equally stupid. And very stupid, too.

You don't have to have every detail 100% compatible to make a comparison. I think it's very true that both the extreme conservatives and hardcore gangsta rappers are both trying to "out-tough" everybody else, are playing a role, and will bizarrely die for it if that's what they have to do. Maybe the extreme conservative will have a better explanation, but it's a bunch of idiots willing to die because they care so very much about how other people perceive them.

I'm always trying to understand why a person would give up a human life, or take a human life by choice. It seems like the dumbest idea in the entire world to me. That's part of what makes me safer, because if I'm in a life or death situation, my mindset will be "how do I not die," rather than "how do I make myself look cool to my friends and family?"

I am very aware of potential threats at all times. While I don't have kids, I work in a very high risk work environment where we are trained on what to do in certain situations. Luckily, there has only been one time where I have been involved in a situation where a person had a weapon and was threatening to kill people. I deescalated the situation according to protocol and won an award for it. Just kidding, I didn't win an award, nobody cared but I had to talk about it over and over again.

I have been nearly killed about a dozen times, and none of those circumstances have involved a crazed inner-city street thug with an AK-47. The sad truth of life is that life threatening situations are almost always mundane, like a drunk middle-aged woman in an SUV texting and driving. The irony is that most people who think "what will I do if a gang of murderers comes into my home for no reason and try to kill me" are completely unaware of what kind of crazy moron is driving behind them. Most people aren't aware of the crazy moron driving behind them. And of all the people having this conversation, I'm probably the only one who has spent time living in the very center of a dense urban area. Speaking of which, there are lots of rules you abide by when living in such a place, but I followed the necessary precautions and never, ever had any trouble.

I didn't call you stupid, I said that it's dumb to be willing to die to look cool. I think the vast majority of people would agree with that. I'm sure you're a reasonably intelligent person or you wouldn't be here in the first place, but even a genius has some pretty dumb ideas. I know I do. Well, just adding to what I said above, do you live in the center of a dense urban area? Like, the downtown area of a city with a population higher than 1 million? If not, you almost certainly are not as equipped as I am to respond to the kind of danger you're talking about. I have no problem with you or anybody else having a gun for protection, but it doesn't mean you're safe.

My comparison between you and gangsta rappers stands. Big words, big image, just like anybody else behind those things.
