Detective in George Zimmerman case turns to Jose Baez for legal help - Trayvon Martin - MiamiHerald.com

Mark O’Mara announced in his motion for a prophylactic sequestration of witnesses that he intends to question SPD officials supervising Serino’s investigation of the Martin homicide regarding why they decided to recommend against charging Zimmerman with a crime.

Chris Serino has a lot to answer for and so do former Chief Bill Lee, former State’s Attorney Norm Wolfinger and other members of the Sanford Police Department who supervised Serino and decided not to charge Zimmerman.

Could Serino's decision have anything to do with manipulation by George Zimmerman’s father, a former judicial magistrate in Virginia with connections to Seminole County State’s Attorney Norm Wolfinger, the State’s Attorney in Seminole County? What about Mark Osterman's and chief Bill Lee's relationship? Could Zimmerman's best friend have influenced Serino's boss into suggesting no charges be filed?

Luckily for Serino, he covered his ass at the last minute.

Oh the corruption. It is a good thing Serino got a lawyer. Looks like Mark O'Mara's plan will backfire, as the other officers will/should retain attorneys themselves.

In reality though, this is what we will probably get out of Serino:

MOM: "State your name for the record."

Serino: "I refuse to answer on the grounds I may incriminate myself".

You seem to forget the police are the STATE, not the defense. Why you think that is good for the prosecutor is truly bizarre.

The police hiding behind lawyers and the 5th does not help the prosecution no matter how anyone figures it.

It also is questionable if an officer takes the 5th in depositions whether that officer could testify at all - and the jury not told why - portraying an absurd level of cover-up by the police against the Defendant.

Nor could a witness respond to questions with the 5th in depositions, but then answer those questions in trial.

While a jury may NOT hold it against a Defendant for not testifying, they certainly can hold it against the State if police witnesses take the 5th and totally refuse to cooperate with required discovery for the Defense. It makes of an absurd prosecution case. Particularly if it is the lead investigator.

that makes no sense unless he acknowledges that his actions were contrary to the expectations of his employer

and why would it be a surprise that serino lawyered up? only a fool would not. the surprise would be one of these witnesses appearing without counsel

I like how you ignore my conspiracy theory and go straight to the 5th. OF COURSE if everything was on the up and up pleading the 5th would make no sense and hurt the prosecution.

Serino knows his superiors done wrong and the truth will come out as evidenced by his late manslaughter charge and the subsequent demotion due to his defiance of the cover-up.

The more it looks like police, DA, and City Hall were feuding over the case, the better it is for the Defense. And if the 5th amendment is thrown into that too, even moreso. Some things are obvious - but NOT if someone assumes guilt unless proven innocent.

Allegedly it was Serino who leaked the substance of Z's post-shooting accounts and medical records

You do realize that Z's declaration and medical records are protected from disclosure by law, eh?

a) I would imagine Baez was hired to handle a book deal, public interview fees and publicity more than anything else. To suggest its for Serino's own legal defense is silly. Serino wouldn't be charged with anything for any of his actions unless he lied under oath and we all know that just gets you disbarred right? (j/k) Or if he didn't lie as ric27 just pointed out the release of Zimm's private records could be a crime but most likely it would just result in a job termination and civil suit by Zimm (more against his employer than serino (deep pocket and all)).


b) If I were the defense attorney the fact Zimm wasn't charged would be a strong focal point of my defense. Authorities had Zimm, believed his story, and let him walk. If that isn't a reasonable doubt what is?

The more I read and hear about this case against Zimm the more I wonder why the judge just does not dismiss it outright. If Zimm is convicted I might riot.

Chris Serino is going to blow the police cover-up out of the water. Jose Baez notified the Prosecution and Defense of possible Brady material.

From emails/memos regarding Serino's report between Capt. O'Connor, Chris Serino and Randy Smith to be forwarded to the State Attorney's Office:

"Based upon the above investigative filings, we request charges under 782....murder in the second degree against George Zimmerman".

So you are stating Serino is bickering for media attention? Baez is the one who provided the memos. The prosecution did not have this before.

If it is just a whine by the prosecutor, why did Serino:

A. Retain his own attorney (it is highly unusual for an investigator to hire his own atorney? Sanford PD has their own law firm Dean Ringer Morton & Lawton.

B. Notify the prosecution and defense of possible Brady material? If it is nothing as you claim, why would Serino trying to cover his own ass?

You really have trouble following don't you?

The bickering and whining is being done by the Prosecutor for purpose of media attention. That is all.
They were drafts. Do you not understand that?

It only matters to the defense if the prosecution had it before or not.

And as Brady applies to the Prosecutors responsibility to the defense, Maybe Baez was telling him to get off his ass and give it to the defense?

And with the Martins and Crump sue happy, it is no wonder that Serino and the the PD got their own attorneys involved.


Your problem is that you do not understand that it was a procedural request, and everything Serino has said after the fact supports Zimmerman.
From him saying the evidence supports Zimmerman, to him saying he felt pressured to file charges.
It all supports his statements that the evidence was in Zimmerman's favor.



You should have learned what Brady material was before opening your mouth and talking about it as if you did.

And he made at least one huge change: He initially said George Zimmerman should be charged with second-degree murder then changed course and recommended a charge of manslaughter, according to a prosecutor and new list of evidence.

And how do you think this is effected by Serino's later comments like;
The best evidence we have is the testimony George Zimmerman, and he says the decedent was the primary aggressor in the whole event," Serino told the Sentinel March 16. "Everything I have is adding up to what he says".

Sharon posted an article on this. Apparently when Baez provided the information on the drafts to the prosecutor, he told them that it would be beneficial to Zimm. As I stated when she first posted that, I have no idea why it would be beneficial, but I suspect he would know more then I on the subject. Any speculation why he thought that?

It makes ZERO x1000 sense to hire an outside lawyer just so Serino could enter evidence for George Zimmerman???
