George Zimmerman defense witnesses: Zimmerman's lawyers: Cops will testify for us - OrlandoSentinel.com
George Zimmerman's lawyers Wednesday notified prosecutors that their witness list now includes a who's who of the Sanford Police Department's chain of command at the time of Trayvon Martin's death, including the police chief, major crimes captain, sergeant and case detectives.

It is an unusual defense strategy. Police officers typically testify for the state, explaining how they gathered the evidence that that led to charges.

In this case, it suggests that Zimmerman's attorneys believe the testimony of Sanford officers will help – not hurt - their client.

Interesting. Anyone want to offer some conjecture on this?

Serino's on the list. Hmmm...

I often pointed out in the past the unusual nature of this case of the police, even FBI, testifying for the Defense.

Too obvious.

It appears O'Mara's strategy is not to fight the charges per se, but to actually work toward a manslaughter charge. He knows he can not win, so he will make it seem like he is putting up a fight. When in reality, manslaughter will be a win for him.

"Sanford police investigated the case for several weeks without making an arrest. Lee and Serino said they were working to gather evidence for a manslaughter charge when they decided to hand the case over to State Attorney Norm Wolfinger."

Like the investigation reports by Serino said, Sanford PD was working on charging Zimmerman with manslaughter. Their investigation at the time clearly supported it.

Are the police actually testifying "for" someone?
Or are they just testifying?

Obviously they are just testifying, but if their testimony supports one side over another, which seems to be what omara believes, and as they are on the defense witness list, it can be said they are testifying for someone.

they will be called as witnesses on behalf of the defense
if they were not expected to offer testimony which would support zimmerman's case
i don't think the defense would have included them on its witness list

now to learn who is on the prosecution's witness list

Clarify any chain of custody issues that might crop up

why would it be any different with the police on the defense team witness list than it when the police are found on the prosecution's witness list?

Probably wouldn't be any difference....but sometimes **** happens and its best to be prepared

Some things seem to have been done by the book, but it wouldn't be the first time, the prosecution throws their own people under the bus

For instance, the firing of Chief Bill Lee

The detail into just exactly what went down

I believe your speculation is wrong. He could negotiate a manslaughter plea at any time he wanted to. You don't fight for and take risk for what you can get without the risk. I think virtually everyone but GZ-haters recognize this is a manslaughter case and M2 used to allow the jury to "compromise" on manslaughter rather just a yes-or-no verdict.

There's a chance Z can get off on self defense, if the jury believes it was TM who initiated the violence and that Z truly was in fear for himself, they could call it that way.

There's no reason for the def and Z to accept a Man plea deal at this point, but they might consider it if the trial is going badly.
