Do Gated Communities Threaten Society?

I wouldn't really call a car racing through an apartment complex parking lot "the excitement of regular society."

Do you shop at supermarkets or malls and notice how people race around for parking spots, trying to get on with their day rather than talking with each other?

I suspect the level of people talking to each other is the same at complexes where people pass thru automated gates and where they do not.

I don't go shopping to make new friends. Shopping is therapy. I want to get lost in bargain hunting, checking out the newest fashions, and lamenting how expensive my taste is in comparison to how shallow my pockets are.

That doesn't mean I won't associate with somebody while I'm out, but it isn't my goal. If I want to meet and socialize I'm going to find an activity or event where other attendees are more likely to have similar interests.

Besides, the vast majority of mall shoppers are teeny boppers. I'm sure their parents would really appreciate a 27 year old woman creepin' on their minor children.

I've never lived in a gated community, and I'm not a big fan of them. I don't feel "safer" being inside coded security gates...I feel trapped.

As to the article, I'm undecided.

I didn't move to where I live because it was gated.. and sometimes the gates malfunction which is a nuisance..
