The bondman's 10 to 15% is NOT refundable (as I understand it). That is the bondman's fee. In return, the Bondman (in theory) is gambling the balance ($850k to $900K). I pulled a comment of this from a bonding company website, but that's how it works. Any fee Zimmerman gives to a bond company is forever gone. So even if he is found not guilty, he not only will have unjustly spent weeks and weeks in jail plus all other restrictions, but also out all his bond money.
In misdemeanor cases, if is often cheaper and the accused get out of jail MUCH faster by pleading guilty than not-guilty. Pleading and being found not guilty in higher misdemeanors can mean almost a year in jail plus thousands in lost fees, where a person pleading guilty may only do a week in jail and pay less fine than the bond-fee. Most Americans can't really afford to plea not-guilty and the constitutional guarantee to bail has been corrupted to being a leverage weapon against defendants.
If you are a poor person, except for major felonies you will do the MOST time by pleading not-guilty, even if found not-guilty. Usually the only way poor people can get out of jail and not lose everything is by pleading guilty - whether guilty or not. They want Zimmerman to be poor and have no defense $$ whatsoever. Nor income ability.
The fee paid to the bail bond agent is also known as a premium. By law in the State of Florida, the premium charge is 10% of the bail bond or $100 minimum per charge. A premium is a non-refundable fee for the service of paying the bail amount on the behalf of the accused.

Just on this matter, GZ could make a deal to plea guilty if they will 1.) stop prosecuting his wife, 2.) let him out of protective solitary confinement - if you've ever been held for any length of time in "protective isolation" you do not dispute minimally the desperate desire to get out and 3.) let his wife then have the $100,000 instead of giving it to a bondsman-
knowing in the alternative he has $0 for defense, no way to get out of solitary, $0 for his wife's defense, $0 for investigators or experts, unable to relocate where he isn't known so $0 income, with the entire force of government and political media coming at him.
He could calculate that a fair trial is impossible because he has no $0, that he can't stand either solitary in jail or a pauper begging his family for food if not, and decide to basically sacrifice himself to at least save his wife.
The pressure the judge and prosecutor collectively are putting on GZ to give up his right to trial is massive and growing each month.
What is the next pressure? The government will have the IRS seized the few dollars left after the bondsman, do a tax lien to take the last personal items he and his wife has, and file a criminal tax evasion charge for not reporting the contributions - plus not paying 32% income tax or $32,000 on the $100,000 that was taken from his defense and given to a bondman?
We are seeing the unlimited raw power against a little nobody when politicians election outcomes may be effected or the media gets a partisan wild hair up its ass about some little nobody person somewhere. Lets hope none of us every end up on the brunt end of it.
