The "Forgotten Child" sent to Chad
The long ordeal of Mohammed El-Gharani, Guantánamo’s youngest prisoner, has finally come to an end. Reprieve, the legal action charity that represents him, reported yesterday that he has been sent back to Chad.
Andy Worthington: The Long Ordeal of Mohammed El-Gharani Someone please explain how we could detain a 14 year old child, that wasn't arrested on the battlefield, nor was he arrested by our troops, in a military prison with no charges being filed for 7 years. To be clear, the only issue I have, is with detaining him without charges. If we had evidence that he was a terrorist,(other than the hear say of other detainees) I say charge him, regardless of his age. That doesn't appear to be the case here. Quote:
He was 14 at the time of his detention He was detained for over 7 years at GITMO without any charges being filed against him. A federal judge named Richard Leon ordered his release in January. He was arrested in Pakistan, not on any battlefield, nor by U.S. troops. I'm not commenting on any treatment he may or may not have endured while at GITMO, but he indeed was detained for 7 years without charges. Apparently the U.S. didn't have enough evidence to charge him, nor to detain him any longer. What am I missing? |
