The U.S. military is working to refine and improve a multi-sensor device that could one day deploy to detect suicide vests...

They're working on a device.

Why not just use a dog like they already do? I mean - the device is great but seems to be under development.

This is the best sniffing tool we've ever had, and it's been around for thousands of years:

Gotcha. Multiple systems is overkill :thinking

Perhaps one day a device that is superior to a dog's nose might be invented. That day isn't yet.

DARPA is funding hundreds of such projects at any given time and typically, progress is made in discreet yet compounding steps.

It goes without saying that currently, trained EOD-K9's are the best asset.

What is astounding in this thread is the resistance to a possibly additional method of revealing a cloaked menace.

The government is extremely wasteful in spending on 'new technology' that does not work as advertised.

Cripe, the TSA's effectiveness is poor at best, and they are stationary and in a very controlled environment.

Hence, the reservedness here.

We wouldn't have such things as stealth technology and wireless prosthetic implants without innovation hits and misses.

Nevertheless, I do understand and appreciate fiscal reservations about government R&D.
