The 10 deadliest interstates in America

It would be great if we could get all our passenger trains back. It would be so much nicer traveling across country on a train rather than driving through traffic in cities and road construction. No need to worry about breaking down or getting a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. Traveling by train was so convenient and fun while in Europe. So much better than being cramped in a car or airplane for long trips. Hard to believe we had the right idea over 100 years ago, but blew it in favor of more cars.

The main issue is that there's no way to make train travel cheaper than air travel. And of course it takes much longer.

I don't care. I'd rather pay more for the luxury of riding a train, and I'll take a bit longer to get where I'm going to avoid all the other unnecessary hassles of flying or driving. Train travel in Europe works just fine. Sure, want other options there they are. I'd rather take the train.

You can't get out of a train whenever you want. If I want to stop and see "South of The Border" or "Wall Drug" or "The Corn Palace", I and only I gets to decide if I'm driving.

Sorry, I don't know what you are talking about.

Your own car is the only mode of transportation YOU get to control. You get to decide where you want to stop. This is what happens if you try to make your own train stop:

Why is this even in question? What are you getting at?

The auto industry has been doing a lot to make cars safer within the past decade: more airbags, rearview cameras, proximity warning systems, etc.

They've been trying to, but the dirty truth is that the cars Americans buy are generally bigger and higher off the ground.

Having more mass and having a higher center of gravity dramatically reduce safety.

By buying a bigger truck or SUV, you pose a greater threat to other vehicles. FYI i have a big truck, but i don't use my cell phone and always pay attention when i drive.

are those serious questions?

So serious that they will be considered impertinent or politically incorrect by some, perhaps treasonous by others.

So thats a no then

Anyone who thinks that car deaths are an issue simply doesnt have a clue

just like or murder rate, our car fatality rate is down to the lowest in our recorded history.

People are doing plenty about the problem and its working.

The more than three percent decline in traffic fatalities continues a long-term downward trend leading to the fatality rate matching a historic low

Wow! This thread brought up a lot of interest, and some interesting points, rather quickly.

Yes, cars are a lot safer than they used to be, and the highway death toll reflects t hat. It's still a lot higher than the death toll from terrorism, which is what seems to have everyone in a tizzy.

Drivers are no safer. If anything, they're more dangerous. They didn't used to have cell phones, for one thing. For another, a car that would top 90 used to be a hot car. Now, nearly any car can go that fast, and a lot of drivers do. Do you ever drive down the freeway noticing the number of scars on the divider and skid marks on the pavement?

Public transportation has its limits. People like the freedom to go when and where they want, stop where they want (within limits. Ever been lost and trying to find a safe place to stop and program the GPS?)

In a tizzy and consuming the public treasury.

Smart phones make people do dumb things while driving. Humans cannot control themselves about looking at these mobile devices. Closely related to television, but I digress.

Most folks drive at a speed and under conditions that they are comfortable with, but accidents DO happen.

And some people are comfortable with driving like they're in the Indy 500 while actually on the public freeways.

A lot of us aren't comfortable with sharing the road with them, however.

Yes, some people do that, but they are a minority.

Most folks, under normal conditions, drive at speeds they consider to be safe.

There will always be some reckless or careless drivers, and hopefully the system will catch them before harm is done.
