Marijuana is literally the least of the nation’s drug worries, the police have announ

Re: Marijuana is literally the least of the nation’s drug worries, the police have an

Yep. The problem is that those who are big players in the pot business are also the ones supplying us with meth, heroin and cocaine. Mexican cartels.

If you think about the demand side here in the USA it is stunning.

People are actually snorting and shooting up that stuff here.

And the Mexicans are making billions of dollars catering to their needs and wants.

It is stunning how many people in Western culture require self-medication.

the Mexican these days isn't like the crap from days gone by, but as the states relax their laws, the domestic US crop is definitely the new go-to weed.

Im 50 miles from Mexico, trust me it's still **** weed. ANd domestic weed has been the main if not only choice for the last 30 years (at least in the Pacific Northwest).

Down here though you can still get Mexican crap for the only reason that its nearby. I cant speak for the whole country though.

lol...you're probably right. I haven't imbibed in many years, and my recollection of Mexican weed was that we would avoid it like the plague.

Re: Marijuana is literally the least of the nation’s drug worries, the police have an

yes it's everything that surrounds the drug trade that is the problem

Yes, and the black market drug trade we have is the DIRECT result of the prohibition imposed by our illustrious congresscritters.

The weed in Colorado is light-years ahead of the stuff we get in Houston; I know by experience.

I guess the police have been hitting that OG Kush.

And even as this story is written, some cop somewhere in the US will send somebody to jail for simple possession. Or worse, perhaps shoot some teenager through the car window, based upon a pot infraction.

The laws need to be changed, ASAP

Related, saw this story the other night - Virginia is actually ramping up arrests of folks for simple possession. New DPA Report Reveals Dramatic Increase in Marijuana Possession Arrests in Virginia, Especially in Black Communities | Drug Policy Alliance

From 2003 to 2013 marijuana possession arrests in Virginia increased from 13,032 to 22,948, which is a 76% increase

There are a lot of difficult decisions that governments have to make, but legalizing pot is a no brainer. Look at the evidence, then decide HOW to legalize it and regulate it, tax it if you want. It's hard to believe we've been this stupid as a country for this many decades.

Re: Marijuana is literally the least of the nation’s drug worries, the police have an

One law i'd like to see is to not allow marijuana to be smoked while walking along the street.

I'm sorry if this makes me a Mary Jane Nazi, but that stuff has a very sickly smell to it, and a very powerful one that is more intense than tobacco, especially to those who don't smoke.

Tobacco smell is bad enough, but marijuana is more powerful of a smell.

Please have some consideration for those that don't partake.

For my cynical self, it is very easy to believe we've been this stupid for this long. On most all subjects, including drug policy, the electorate is grossly brainwashed and very emotional, so they do what they are told.

The various enforcement bureaucracies whose very existence depends upon the drug policy we have, defend the status quo at every opportunity.

It is not an accident that the drug prohibition came into existence, neither the Harrison Act in 1914 nor pot in 1937, nor CSA and others later. All those legislative acts were based upon irrational untruths, and they are all defended today by every branch of government.

Generally speaking, the jurisdictions that legalize it usually make it an offense w/ civil fine to be caught smoking in public, as they would if someone violated an anti-smoking ban aimed at tobacco. Municipalities are generally free to add on their own restrictions, too.

Re: Marijuana is literally the least of the nation’s drug worries, the police have an

I predict marijuana being legal for recreational use in 10-15 years. Used to think it would take 20-30 years, but progress is speeding up.

I think in 10-15 years the federal government will remove it their list of dangerous drugs with no medical benefit (I forget what that list is actually called) and make it a state's rights issue. There will always be a few states that won't legalize it.

Re: Marijuana is literally the least of the nation’s drug worries, the police have an

While something like Marijuana is really no big deal, some other drugs are an extreme issue - everything from the environment they're cultivated in being harmful to the effects of usage on the user. Some drugs cause permanent and severe physiological and psychological damage.

Does prohibition reduce these issues, or does such policy create extreme externalities?

I can't think of a drug where this is the case. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.
The drug that comes to mind is meth. It's extremely dangerous to make and totally destroys it's users.

Wanted to clarify: What I meant was I can't see anything that can reduce the harm that meth causes. I believe the war on drugs is a huge waste of time and resources. But that crap is vicious.

But why does it destroy users? Is it because of the high price, the irresponsible production processes used, lack of rehabillitation opportunities, or a combination of all the above?

Remember, we prescribe a single-methylated version known as adderall, which is taken by high-school and college students across the world. Meth is just stronger, and will cause severe irritation to the stomach if ingested orally.

There are a number articles I could cite. Meth destroys the body faster than any other recreational drug. Addiction is almost guaranteed upon first use. The above factors play a role as well. Meth sucks you down the rabbit hole of hell.

I'm pretty sure the other form of meth was Desoxyn, manufactured since the 50's by Abbott, who I suppose has been bought out by now.

I am sure there are articles that depict the use and abuse of black market methamphetamine. That does not negate my point.

Prohibition doesn't help negate drug abuse; it only hides it until it erupts onto society in one form or another.

Rarely prescribed, mostly due to it not being available at pretty much any pharmacy.

It was available, and we dispensed it, at a small pharmacy in the 1 Horse Town I lived in back then. I don't remember dispensing much of it, but it did move. And the world did not end! ;)

Short- & Long-Term Side Effects of Crystal Methamphetamine on the Body- Drug-Free World

yea doesn't cause issues at all.

yep and it is all illegal and frankly has other side affects when abused.

Effects of Adderall Use – Short- and Long-Term | Drugabuse.com

I think you need to actually study these things before making the claims that they are harmless or only dangerous because of high prices and production processes.

It isn't just drugs that are the issue it is all the other crap that goes along with it.

job loss
poverty
destruction of the family
murder
suicide

pretty much everything negative you can imagine goes along with it.
that doesn't include the terror that the gangs and cartels pushing the stuff bring.

according to the NYPD there is more gun violence over pot than other drugs.

no one that advocates any of the pro-drug argument would spend 1 week let alone 1 day living in a drug infested neighborhood. in fact we all know where those are
and we avoid them at all costs.
