New marijuana law side effect: Youth possession now a felony | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KOMO News

A prosecutor in southeastern Washington has charged three teens with felonies for marijuana possession, saying a new law demands the higher level of offense. The Lewiston Tribune in Idaho reports the teens ages 14, 15 and 17 have been charged in nearby Asotin County with felonies that could net them up to five years in prison. The offense was previously a misdemeanor with a maximum 90-day jail sentence.

marijuana is not a danger to anyone, it should not be a crime to have one ounce or one ton of it.

A bit harsh but somewhat a consequence of turning to government regulation. If we decide that we need to treat marijuana similarly to alcohol or tobacco then we have immediate concerns the government likes to decide for us. One is age requirement, another is control over commerce of the product. In this case from the OP looks like Washington may be going too far with underage possession of marijuana, but even if lessened odds are going forward there will still be legal controls on this.

We should absolutely try to prevent minors from using it as much as possible, but turning teenagers into felons over smoking a little weed is ridiculous.

I agree, I stipulated that this was harsh. They went too far, and we can only hope that more reasonable effort is put into the subject of underage possession.

It's utter ludicrousity

To ruin a young persons life over simple possession is utter insanity.

Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.

*Unless you're into the wrong herbology.

Really, we need to start punishing stupid politicians that pass stupid laws. We also have to stop violating the rights of minors like this. If parents want their kids to not smoke pot then they have to act like parents.

Anyone who would incarcerate a human being, ruin their livelihood and life, for possessing or partaking of a plant that grows wild around the world, is the REAL criminal among us. They should lock up people like that and throw away the key. Utterly disgusting.

It's worse than that. The people behind this are doing it for profit. It's the lowest, basest, greediest motive of all.

Another over-zealous prosecutor.

I still find it hard to believe how we punish the use of weed while still generally being so accepting of it in society. Practically every politician and celebrity admits they tried weed when they were younger and yet we still have in place punishments that could ruin someone's life for simple posession.

Our government and its many bureaucracies simply love the status quo. From the bureaucratic perspective it is the proverbial Goose That Lays Golden Eggs. ;)

It depends from whose perspective whether it's "asinine":Those are three felony convictions the prosecutor might be able tack on his board.

This argument is what I like to call "Greasing the slope".

Prison for pot.

And Americans wonder why they have a problem with crime.

Was is it with this war on pot? Millions of people die every day from alcohol related injuries and accidents, tobacco claims even more through cancer and related diseases, but the country thinks the worst substance on the planet is pot.

What will you do when it's legal in Canada. We are electing a new government next week, and the guy who is wining has vowed to legalize t.

Insane, the whole ****ing country is insane

Let's see, American tobacco companies have been sued successfully for adding addictive substances in their product, have been forced to aim thei advertising AWAY from children; selling a product that claims millions of lives every year.
It has been documented that millions die each year as a result of tobacco use, over 125 forms of cancer directly caused by it, and we can sell it anywhere.
Sell a pack of that poison to a minor, and the dealer gets a fine.

Meanwhile, there is NO documented evidence that Cannabis is harmful in any way but sell it to a minor and the minor becomes an adult criminal, a felon to be caged with hard core killers, a kid who will never be allowed to vote or hold public office.

Somewhere, someone is seriously ****ed up.

They knew it was illegal, and did it anyway. It's their own fault.

Absolutely. I'd much rather see teens smoke a little weed than experiment with alcohol.

There is an update;

In a follow-up to this story, the prosecutor admitted he had misinterpreted state law and that the teens should have been charged with a misdemeanor, not a felony. The charges therefore have been reduced.
