The woman whose story of economic recovery was showcased by President Barack Obama in his State of the Union address is a former Democratic campaign staffer and has been used by Obama for political events in the past.

Rebekah Erler has been presented by the White House as a woman who was discovered by the president after she wrote to him last March about her economic hardships. She was showcased in the speech as proof that middle class Americans are coming forward to say that Obama’s policies are working.

Unmentioned in the White House bio of Erler is that she is a former Democratic campaign operative, working as a field organizer for Sen. Patty Murray (D., Wash.).

Why can't they find a real person to illustrate a point, is it that difficult? They overcame some struggles, but why couldn't they find someone not involved with the Democratic Party....it always raises questions.

Generally speaking, the people singled out for these kind of "feel-good" SOTU moments are people recommended to the President (or his staff) by congresspeople. It makes some degree of sense that a congressperson would be more familiar with the story of someone they've worked with to a degree.

I don't see how in ANY way this rises to the level of "scandal."

Politicians pick the faces for their propoganda from their own camp. What's new?

Same ole' same ole' in America, seems to me. If people want to stop seeing this silliness, then we should be a people less swayed by worthless anecdotes. They go this route because it tends to work, on a populace that is generally anti-intellectual and doesn't look to hard into its politics.

Obama did his usual, gave the false impression that this woman was personally selected for this event because she wrote to him.

When in fact he had met with her in June spending the day with her, and she is former Democratic campaign worker.

The background gives away to the fact she was Obama's prop in June and again for the SOTU address.

well, I dunno... I don't think there is a shortage of people whom have overcome hard times that don't have a direct professional connection to a party.

it sure look a lot better when you don't choose an "insider" to prop up an agenda....I think they call it "optics", or something like that.

Perhaps in this day and age, real people don't want to be hood ornaments on a clown car in the national politics parade.

I believe you would be correct.

Obama and his administration has not worried about optics in the past, I don't see him worrying about them in the future.
