GOP bill forces feds to pay states for detention, education costs of illegals

>" Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.) has proposed new legislation that would require the federal government to reimburse states for the costs they incur by detaining and educating illegal immigrants.

Her Accountability in Foreign Aid Act reflects a longstanding Republican complaint that states are bearing the brunt of the Obama administration’s failure to enforce the border, and attempts to allow millions of illegal immigrants to stay in the country.

The GOP has said the administration’s clear preference for easing immigration rules has attracted millions of illegal immigrants, and played a major role in the border crisis earlier this year.

“The situation at the border is unprecedented — children are coming into our states at a rate that will overwhelm our local communities and their available resources,” Ellmers said Wednesday. “These children are being funneled into our public schools and our hospitals are forced to provide emergency care, but our states are given no financial assistance to deal with this ongoing problem.”

“Rather than continue to supply an endless amount of foreign aid abroad, it’s time we redirect funding sent overseas and prioritize our local governments who are left footing the bill,” she added.

Ellmers cited a Newsmax article saying that states will spend $761 million just to educate undocumented immigrants..."<

Thank God they're not spending more money...oh...never mind.

They aren't spending more money. The money is already spent - just by the wrong government entity.

The federal government can't have it both ways; tell the states that they have no jurisdiction in immigration law, but expect the states to pay for the consequences of the federal governments failure to enforce those very laws.

I tend to agree that the feds should pay for it. However, if Obama had proposed this spending, AR would be the first one screaming about it.

On its surface this looks like a good thing. But think about states like California and others that blatantly encourage illegal immigration. It is going to give them free money to further encourage illegal immigration and its going to encourage states to not try to crack down on illegal immigration.

If these republicans were so concerned about states paying for education for illegals then the simple thing is to require that the person enrolling the kids into school present a state issued ID. In order to get that state issued ID one must present a birth certificate(a certificate of non-availability in rare cases and the individual has been thoroughly vetted), certificate of naturalization,or green card. This ensures that anyone here illegally can not enroll themselves or kids into school.

Shouldn't the GOP raise taxes to make sure this is revenue neutral?

Wait, they only call for that when they want to defeat legislation that helps working folk. Here they're just pandering to their xenophobic base, so all deficit considerations are out the door.

The Democrats in Sacramento have already spent the money and they want more.

Having a President who refuses to enforce our laws is a horrible idea.

Doesn't change the fact it is a horrible bill, the money is already spent. BTW, you will have to deal with Obama until after 2016. I know you hate it, but those are the facts.

This is just the GOP wanting to spend MORE federal money. So much for "We can't afford any more spending" huh?
