Many years ago, I was an occasional listener of Limbaugh's, but as his rhetoric became ever more foolish, vitriolic and biased, I stopped. (This is likely somewhere in the 1990's.)

Since then, as some of his comments have been reported, circulated on youtube, etc., I have grown to genuinely loathe this man. I don't think he cares a damn what he says as long as his audience grows, his own revenues grow, etc. To me, he's like the Pat Robertson of politics.

I can't for the life of me get how this guy has stayed on the air as long as he has, given some of the things he has said. But geeze louise, even the lookalike Glenn Beck had to claim God was punishing Haiti with an earthquake because the US is moving further towards civil rights for gay people before he got tossed.

So here's my little, curious question: WTF was the big fat deal about Rush calling a grown woman a "slut"? I just don't understand how this one relatively inoffensive (for him) remark could be resulting in all the blowback he's getting. (Don't misunderstand me; I revel in his downfall; I just don't understand it.)

Did someone demonize the word "slut" while I was sleeping? Who is this woman, that can testify before Congress but bursts into tears and needs therapy because Rush insulted her? God damn, some of you young liberal women (and men) today would never have made it in the Feminist Movement of the 1970's, I can tell you.

Sometimes, I think modern liberals take pride in behaving like a bunch of emo first graders. This kinda reminds me of all the transparently stupid hand-wringing that went on when Obama had Bin Laden killed. I'm sorry...how in the hell could that POSSIBLY have been a bad thing?

Seriously, people? "Slut" is where we liberals have chosen to draw the line in the sand today?

Susan B. Anthony must be rolling over in her grave.

Because the limits on radio station ownership got deregulated and a a guy named Lowery Mayes basically bought up every single AM radio station he could.

Well, presumably this Mays guy was out to make money. To be honest, I don't think I have heard AM radio outside VERY rural areas since like mebbe 1965. It's not an industry I understand all that well....but I presume it's profit-seeking.

It was also a way to consolidate a political message nationwide while shutting out contrary positions.

So you think Mays is kin to the Koch Brothers?

Still confusing; if this is so, why allow a relatively minor hiccup to destroy Rush's show?

Kin? no. In the same camp? Yes

Minor hiccup? the guy has been doing this **** for years now!

And BTW my main deal is with the ownership rules. If one can come in and buy up all the radio stations in a city that in and of itself squelches a diversity of opinions as well as freedom of the press.

Pinkie, I see this whole thing as not really being an issue of someone being called a slut. I see it as:

1. The latest attempt to try to take down Rush. He's been around for a long time, has influence with conservatives and is some kind of threat as perceived by liberals. Liberals have repeatedly tried...and failed...to take him down, but they keep trying.

2. A continuation of the attempt by the liberals to keep the nation's attention off of the important issues and on non-issues like birth control. Rush kind of aided them by making his remarks and they are running with it.

Frankly, I see this as akin to the hyperbolic and outlandish reaction from the liberals in the wake of the Tucson shootings. You know, how liberals used that to portray every conservative as a murderer by proxy.

btw, I suspect Rush will weather this just like he's weathered all the other attempts to silence him.

It also violates the Sherman Anti-Trust Act and (I believe) some FTC or FCC rules and laws, which may or may not have since been repealed.

But hey, what's some major monpoly building among friends?

O, I have $5 that says Rush is gone from his radio show....and will be on MSNBC by Labor Day.

It surely is true, liberals wanted Rush gone -- but we have wanted it for decades. Why give in now, over such nonsense?

I think you paint with too broad a brush when you claim liberals want to be distracted from real issues, like the economy. There's many of all political stripes who will bury their head in the sand, but there's just as many (if not more) like this who are conservative. How else could you explain Santorum's modest success at the polls?

The Tucson shooting DID deserve the level of discussion it received, IMO. Comparing political asassination and the murder of bystanders to calling a grown woman a "slut" just don't seem quite kosher, does it?

Liberal, liberal, liberal, liberal...you only said that four times.

WTF do you think Rush is doing?

Liberal, liberal, liberal, liberal...you only said that four times.

WTF do you think Rush is doing?

Yes, and I'll say it again...liberal. You got a problem with that?

Anyway, didn't you see me saying that Rush helped them along?

Look, I'm not excusing Rush for calling the lady a slut, but I'm also not letting liberals and the liberal media off the hook for making a big deal about this. Especially when they look the other way when a liberal uses the same kind of language in respect to conservative women. I expressed my opinion on why this is happening. Deal with it.

Susan B. Anthony must be rolling over in her grave.

He called a grown lawyer, woman's health activist a slut. She wasn't some innocent little woman that the Dems plucked out of American. They put her in their little subcommittee hearing for a reason. She is a big activist that targetted Georgetown.

Frankly I'd say a slut, a whore or a prostitute are more honest than she is.

You would lose that bet.

Do you think Rush is giving in? Or do I misunderstand what you are saying?

I disagree with you about my brush. I mean, just look at all the attention...focused by liberals...on abortion and birth control. Can you honestly say that you think this is a front burner issue? Would you say that the election could hinge on this issue? I don't think it does, but it's pretty much the only thing liberals want to talk about. Why do you think that is?

I'm not comparing the two events. I'm comparing the reactions and responses of the liberals in the two events and I think the rhetoric after the Tuscon event was totally off the wall and, frankly, insulting and disgusting. But liberals, from the highest levels on down to political forums went into a frenzy and accused every conservative they could find of promoting attitudes that caused the tragedy. Some liberals even charged some conservatives with being virtual accomplices. No, the "level of discussion" was totally inappropriate and over the top...just like this Rush issue.

Well, I have no idea who this woman is, much less what sort of character she has. I also don't get the comparison to prostitutes....is "honesty" in prostitution in high demand now too? Did that also occur whilst I slept?

What chaps my ass is, we USED to be Feminists, with Big Girl Panties, ready to enter all the male-dominated fields no matter how much we were insulted. These days, liberal young men and women seem to act more like pre-1969 hippies in perpetual search for a perfectly politically correct world. I was never one for shoving daisies into rifle barrels, and I'm still not.

As for conspiracy theories, I'm baffled. It's the advertisers and radio stations who are running this circus, not the media, liberal or otherwise. So if we follow the money, how is this benefiting them?

So basically words have no meaning to you other than their metaphorical dramatic impact in this case.

What a shame we didn't get to convo at the time. I was radically opposed to your POV regarding the Tucson shooting, and had much fun making conservatives burst into flames on the subject.

We could re-run this, if you like, but not tonight. I need to hit the hay ASAP.

Are words in any debate on DP used for any other purposes, winston? I do it, you do it....we all do it.

It's part of the fun. Occassionally a fact or two is passed along on here, but basically we all use the most colorful language the TOS will allow to emphasize whatever we are passionate about.

Okay, then why did you make a big deal of it?

Again, then why did you make a big deal of it?

There’s no shortage of examples, from MSNBC’s Ed Schultz calling conservative radio host Laura Ingraham a “right wing slut“ to Current’s Keith Olbermann assailing conservative commentator Michelle Malkin as a “mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick on it,” to unflattering remarks made by HBO comedian Bill Maher about former Governor Sarah Palin. (Maher recently pledged a $1 million contribution to the Super-PAC that supports President Obama, which is run by former top White House aides.)

There are already plenty of articles on Fluke. This is her MO, she is not new to this business. What Limbaugh did wrong is not related, he just happen to screw up on this one. But he basically had her pegged (no pun intended) for what she is. He just shouldn't have used those words.

I'm not. I'm posting on a message board at 3 in the morning. With in the topic

Ed Shulttz is a POS IMHO and I never watch him...so is Laura Ingrahm.

Mycroft, MSNBC is not a "liberal news outlet". It's where odious and immoral blowhards go to be overpaid to be totally ignored. No one I know would disagree with you about that station and its "talking heads", but please.

I absolutely refuse to be stained with their crap. They employ Al Sharpton, for pity's sake. It's the town dump of cable, and not my cross to bear.

BTW, I am also refusing to accept any sort of blowback for that asshole Bill Maher.

What is Fluke?

I actually have no problem with Rush calling a woman discussing contraception in a Congressional hearing a "slut". On the contrary, he'd be stepping way out of character if he didn't. I wonder why he didn't add "feminazi" as well?

I will admit, I'm not fond of the growing use of bad language in the media, but geeze louise, we passed "slut" like 20 years ago on cable. I fully expect to hear it in children's cartoons these days. I cannot for the life of me understand how this particular word gained renewed incendiary value overnight.

Exactly whose delicate little ears tuned in to Rush's show expecting anything different?

For God's sake, I have used the exact same word in the Op's title! Am I to be burned at the stake as well?
