Why Is "Slut" Fatal For Rush?

Let's look at the number of loyal listeners some are claiming Rush has.

The number 20 million gets tossed around a lot. It first appears in print in a 'Billboard' interview of a Kit Carson, supposed to be Rush's Chief of Staff, as the number of listeners in 1993. Does it seem odd to anyone that number has not changed since?

There is no realistic way to verify that number, the syndication company doesn't release and data and the patchwork of stations doesn't make independent verification easy. It isn't in the best interest of Rush and co to release the data only if the real numbers doesn't support the 20 million claim as what Rush can charge depends on the number of ears he can bring to the table.

Now what is counted as a listener? The answer might surprise you. A listener is someone who listens to the program for at least 2 minutes during a 15 minute segment. So one person can be 4 listeners if the radio is on for an hour! The magic of radio!

Radio insiders are highly skeptical of the raw numbers and their rule of thumb is divide by 10. That means Rush's 20 million most likely is around 2 million IF there ever were 20 million.

According to Rush himself he has not seen any numbers since January so how does he claim the increase of listeners? Easy, he has cheerleaders who pulled it from the sky! Someone says it so it must be true.

I can understand when 'conservatives' grumble about the lamestream media not verifying a story, but this was so easy to debunk.
 
He also has people like myself who are probably not counted as listeners (because they don't tune in to him on the radio) but instead access his show through the iphone app/website.

Also incidents like "Slutgate" can theoretically drum up more of an audience for him, because now that everyone is talking about him, someone that may have not watched his show before is now curious what it is all about.

But back to my point you dodged, no one can count any listeners because no one can have access to any numbers. Rush built his empire on smoke and mirrors. The numbers you posted can not be verified because those who made the claims for Rush to parrot just made them up. His cheerleaders have thrown around anything from 60% to doubled.

I think when the media tries to summarize the incident they use the word "slut" as that is the way he punctuated a rant about a woman he knew little about and how he totally screwed the topic up in the process.

I think if you look at a lot of the voices that get more and more extreme they tend to fade away or viewers along with advertisers are turned off by false martyrs. Look at Beck, Olbermann, etc.

Actually there are polls which can get quite specific as to numbers and advertisers will pay accordingly. Rush makes a lot of money.

Of course he's still on the air. He's still on the air because a lot of people are ignorant racists who suck up everything the fat bulbous toad has to say. Demagogues in this country have always managed to survive because playing on the fears and prejudices of people has always been a winning formula with those who are incapable of thinking for themselves.

Ignorant racist. ouch! I can't stand the guy but I wouldn't classify it as racist as much as an oversimplification with even more simple minded slogans. It's style over substance which is a problem much greater than Rush. Hating him is actually a wasted effort because if you google people meters and conservative talk radio you will discover that many of the conservative talk guys are really paper tigers that never had the listeners people thought.

FYI People meters are the new way of recording listeners that is much more accurate and many of the conservative guys have taken a hit with a more accurate count. In the past they used diaries which were based on someone recalling what they listened to and reporting it. As you can imagine this was probably heavily influenced by those who made the most noise.

Did someone demonize the word "slut" while I was sleeping? Who is this woman, that can testify before Congress but bursts into tears and needs therapy because Rush insulted her? God damn, some of you young liberal women (and men) today would never have made it in the Feminist Movement of the 1970's, I can tell you.

Sometimes, I think modern liberals take pride in behaving like a bunch of emo first graders. This kinda reminds me of all the transparently stupid hand-wringing that went on when Obama had Bin Laden killed. I'm sorry...how in the hell could that POSSIBLY have been a bad thing?

Well it's been 3 years and 3 months and Rush is still the King of talk radio. So far "slut" wasn't very fatal at all.

Rush knows how to thrive on this sort of stuff. It's true what they say, there's no such thing as bad media. Rush knows how to get himself attention and his key method is by venting for the masses. That's why people listen to him, he speaks their mind and/or offers an avenue for them to speak their mind. It's brilliant.
 
Is this the same person that said any person addicted to drugs is weak and should be shot. except me I addicted to painkillers but that's ok my maid scores for me?? They say that some suffer from short term memory loss and long term memory loss , BUT some have not forgotten.
